Travis Bickle (De Niro) is an ex-Marine with a problem, he cannot sleep. So, he gets a job driving a taxi in the New York night. He is a man without fear so he will go anywhere anytime and of course, this means that he always sees the worst of the city.
Travis is almost totally lacking in social skills and this leads to a disastrous date with Betsy (Shepherd) and an ever increasing sense of alienation from and disgust with the world around him.

A chance encounter with Iris (Foster) a child prostitute, increases Travis' sense that he must do something about the city. He wavers between taking action against the man in control of Betsy, politician Charles Palantine for whom Betsy is a campaign worker and the man in control of Iris, Sport (Keitel) her pimp.

A close brush with secret service men who spot him in a crowd makes his decision and Travis decides to free Iris in a bloody shootout.

It's not a bad plot but the movie is really about the alienation of one man from the city around him. In this, De Niro is totally convincing he is in the city but not of the city. He has a hard job too. A social misfit cannot be given a sharp snappy script. Instead, such a person will at times be an embarrassment to those around him and De Niro portrays this perfectly.

This definitely a "must see" film. It is well paced and keeps the audience's attention throughout. The settings and the atmosphere of the dark side of the city are convincing. My only reservation is the ending. I cannot see how Travis' action would have been viewed in the way that the film showed.

Mesmerising story of the descent into madness of a lonely, alienated man. At the time the film was made(1976), parts of New York were a cesspit of prostitution and porno cinemas, and this is well reflected in the film. Robert De Niro's portrayal of Travis Bickle, a Vietnam veteran who becomes a taxi driver to fill some time in his empty, friendless life and ultimately becomes a gun freak is one of his very best. He has great support from (the then) 12-year-old Jodie Foster as a child prostitute, Cybill Shepherd and Harvey Keitel. Director Martin Scorsese has a spooky cameo as a betrayed husband. The glittering menace of New York at night is vividly captured by cameraman Michael Chapman. But the icing on the cake is the moody music by Bernard Herrmann. Sadly it was to be his swansong, because he died soon after recording it. A masterpiece.

Taxi Driver is one of the most absorbing, bleak, and wrenching films I have ever seen. Even after many viewings, I still get sucked into Travis’s lonely and isolated world. Robert De Niro (The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, Awakenings) gives an amazing performance, completely immersing himself in the twisted soul of Travis Bickle. Jodie Foster (Contact, Silence of the Lambs) plays Iris and she is surprisingly good for her age. Bernard Herrmann (Psycho, Citizen Kane, North by Northwest) finished his score for Taxi Driver just hours before he died. It’s an unusual and haunting score that adds much to the mood of the film. I've read that Scorcese (Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ) was forced to tone down the colors of the blood in the final scene to avoid an X rating. Another interesting note is that Taxi Driver was shown repeatedly during the John Hinkley trial to establish that the media had warped the assassins mind. 1976 was the year of Network and Rocky, preventing Taxi Driver from winning any Academy Awards. The film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor (DeNiro), Best Supporting Actress (Foster) and Best Score. This truly is a landmark film in the history of the cinema.

amazing for the older movie lover - taxi driver

to be honest
i would rate taxi driver as excellent - as oppose to good - if i was an older viewer

taxi driver is an excellent film
a realistic story line
in a city that corresponds with the cooruption mentioned

there is a lot of controversy over the child actress - as she is about 14 and playing the role of a prostitute
i think this though adds to its realism

the main problem is that in this film, for the younger viwer it is hard to establish understanding with some of the feelings and thoughts that the actors are having, especially with the changing english language

however i do think this is one of the excellent films
- as documented by many film agencies as being one of the top 100 films to see before you buy -
at contasting society now and then, and the problems that existed them
{unruly teenagers, drug use, prostitution}
{particularly with the upcoming elecotoral campaign}
and society's response to such problems and such acts of heroism

the film challenges the mind to think about aspects such as war, the outkasts within society, and the problems that aristocracy brings

A MUST SEE

Absolutley jaw dropping!
The film follows ex vet Travis Bickles a night shift taxicab driver and his attempts to mingle into a society of which he feels alienated from.
As society rejects him for one reason or another, we see him start to feel more and more repelled by what he sees and inevitably becomes more and more isolated leading to his subsequent rebellion.
A moody, poignant philosophical film, well directed....And as we've come to expect from De Niro, superbly acted!
This is a timeless classic.....if you've never seen the movie...watch it!

To say that this film influenced my life would be an understatement, I first saw TAXI DRIVER back in 1976 when I was 19 years old, I was amazed, Deniro's performance as "troubled" Travis Bickle affected me deeply, I became a Taxi Driver "junkie" seeing the film again and again at every opportunity, I found the films graphic violence both chilling and unnerving yet somehow compulsive,
Travis Bickle was my all time favourite anti hero, I now have two copies of this film on DVD...just in case the first one "dies" from over viewing!
See, or should I say "experience" TAXI DRIVER for yourself, you will not be dissapointed...you have my word.

  Taxi Driver - De Niro

Taxi Driver…an almost faultless film that is intense, enthralling and psychological. De Niro’s portrayal of a depressed and lonely New York cabbie is fantastic. I would definitely say that it is one of his greatest roles, perhaps only second to ‘The Deer Hunter’.

The depression of the cabbie gradually deepens, and deepens and events around only accelerate the process. Eventually the desire to be noticed and to be somebody unleashes.

If you enjoy first rate, 5 star films then watch this. This is a film that you simply must see. Even if reading the above comments does not encourage you to see it, I still strongly advise you to see it, simply because it is a cinematic high point.

Also, the lenghts that the actors went to to really absorb the roles is simply astonishing. For example, De Niro, actually worked as a cabbie for month!

5 Out Of 5 - Excellent

A.R.

  Taxi Driver-the method actor
Review created: 05/07/09

I chose this film as it was considered to be a 'De Niro' classic and i felt the need to see it. Over the years RDN (De Niro) has appeared in varied roles, however, one thing stays the same- the method. As I learnt from a truly loved one- the love of my life, he is a method actor and from a very young age up continued to study his own method. This being one of his earliar films and shows real 'truth' in what many actors are taught (the truth of the moment).
classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111

A story about a lonely man
Review created: 02/02/09(updated 05/02/09)

In general I cannot say any negative aspect of this film because I have not found anything bad. Although it is a film of the 70s it is not an old-fashioned movie because the essence of the story, the reality that is shown on it, can be perfectly referred to the current society. This film has the privilege of having made famous the sentence ‘You talking' to me? You talking' to me?' which will remain in the history of cinema. This is an authentic masterpiece.

My original review took the form of a row of xs, eBay have since changed the "presence" of the "review your recent purchase" so that it is no longer so insistent, (Insistent enough for me to be so annoyed as to "review" a perfectly good film in such a way) as a result of this I have changed the review, I cannot remove it but I can give a brief explanation of my action.

  Classic 70s New Hollywood
Review created: 29/01/08

From the duo who created Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Casino and Goodfellas came one of the first truly horrific psycho dramas.

Structured like a nightmare gone mad, the Travis Bickle character comes home from Vietnam to discover a world of depravity in New York. Alcohol and drug-fuelled his mind may be, but he is strangely drawn to a campaign worker in the form of Cybil Shepherd.

The rest, as they say, is cinema history. The bloodbath denouement is unforgettable and the actual ending more haunting than the final scene to Carrie.

De Niro gets better and better with age. This was one of his early films which I had always heard about but never watched so as it was as "cheap as chips" on e-bay I thought I would give it a try.THis is one of those films which will embed itself in your memory bank- a masterful performance which stands the test of time.

  Taxi Driver Robert De Niro
Review created: 07/02/07

An intense film with De Niro at his greatest. A benchmark film for gritty realism that shocked America into the realisation that not all was Mom's apple pie and stars and stripes. I bought it for my 17 year old son who is in film studies at college. He has been a DeNiro fan since he was 10. My rating... Brilliant.
