Having bought "Talking Heads: 77" [see my review] back in 1977 I could hardly wait for their second album to appear so when "More Songs About Buildings And Food" hit the streets in 1987 I bought it right away.
The first thing to catch my eye was the cover. a photmontage of the band made from literally hundreds [529 to be precise!] of Polaroid photographs of every part of their bodies, positively brilliant. I absolutely loved "TH: 77" so couldn't begin to imagine how it could be topped. Boy was I wrong!
Having gained confidence from the success of "TH: 77" the band really pulled out all the stops with "More Songs About Buildings And Food". David Bryne is at his lyrical best with such gems as "The Big Country", "Stay Hungry", "The Girls Want To Be With The Girls", "Warning Sign" and "the Good Thing". And just to show there is no limit to his talents Byrne performs a cover of Al Green's "Take Me To The River" which proves, once and for all, that not all cover versions are crap. Performed in his inimitable style this cover is a beauty, better than the original and possibly the definitive version of this classic song.
I just had to buy the CD when it came out in 1987 and it was every bit as good as the original album. The accompanying booklet includes the spectacular artwork from the front and back covers together with all the lyrics [except "Take Me To The River"] and the original cover notes.
This has to be my favourite album of theirs and I really can't recommend it highly enough. It is brilliance personified. I love it.
