Finding nothing, he comes back to a changed world--not only has terrorism become rampant, but Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has married, started a family, and won the Pulitzer for her piece 'Why the World Doesn't Need Superman'. After a stop in Smallville to see his adopted mother (Eva Marie Saint), Superman is back in Metropolis, and Clark Kent has his old job back at the Daily Planet, with everyone still incredibly oblivious to his alter ego. But where there's Superman, there's Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey), and he is likely to be planning something dastardly--in this case, using a piece of pilfered kryptonite to grow an entirely new continent that he will control. Bryan Singer (X-MEN 1 and 2), armed with a script by Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty, approaches the red cape with reverence for the lore of the character, and respect for Richard Donner's SUPERMAN (1980) and Richard Lester's 1980 sequel, films that ushered in the era of the modern superhero film. Singer's SUPERMAN is filled with melancholy, and not so subtly suggests the notion of Superman as a Christ figure, sacrificing himself to save mankind. But there are still laughs, mostly courtesy of Spacey (clearly having a blast) and Parker Posey as his moll, Kitty Kowalski, as well as plenty of gasp-inducing set pieces, including a spectacular and terrifying near plane crash and a sinking boat. While modern visual effects have allowed Superman to reach entirely new realms, Singer keeps them from becoming the film's raison d'etre, thus keeping the Man of Steel's gigantic heart intact--heavy though it may be.

Reviews Kevin Spacey is so great as Lex Luther in this, a very believable villain. Brandon Routh who plays Superman is gorgeous and so loveable. Kate Bosworth plays Lois brilliantly. Very entertaining and great for all the family. Review ID: 10000000008491168 Was this review helpful? Report this review better than the others made but never the same as the lois and clark series It's too long, but then so-called 'event movies' always have been.Nearly 20 years have passed since the Man of Steel was last impersonated on screen by the definitive Superman, the late Christopher Reeve, and back in 1987 everyone agreed that the preachy, soporific, underpowered Superman IV: The Quest for Peace was the last fizzle of the series. It was inevitable, however, that after 9/11 America's greatest superhero would come back to protect the threatened city of Metropolis. Significantly, Superman Returns specifies an absence of five years and it hits the screen running, or rather triumphantly marching, to John Williams's stirring 'Superman Theme'. The new film is dedicated to Reeve and his late wife, Dana, who had both demonstrated superhuman courage after his tragic riding accident in 1995. The producers have found in Brandon Routh an ingenuous, all-American actor who also has the smoothly contoured, planed-down looks of a comic-book hero and is as unknown to us as was Reeve in 1978. Report this review Review created: 22/03/08 by: I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I was expecting the worst, so was very pleased to see it lived up to the billing and hype it got. Unlike Spider-Man and Batman, they didn't re-invent Superman. Instead, the story continues from where the Christopher Reeve films left off all those years ago. At first I was a little disappointed with this, because with both Batman and Spider-Man their stories have been re-invented to make them relevant to today. However, watch the film and you'll be under no illusions there really wasn't another way for them to go about it. Unlike Batman and Superman, there's nothing about Superman that really needs to be updated to make it relevant to today, apart from the way the villains fight, and in this film they did that without making it look out of place. The film takes place after Superman has been gone for some time, but returns to Earth where little has changed, except for the people close to him - Louise Lane and Lex Luther. The film gives great respect to the originals in both the story and style, but the special effects are far better than they ever were back when Mr Reeves was running around with his underwear over his trousers! If you're a Superman fan, then you've probably already seen it and know how good it is. If you've not seen it because you feel it will ruin the magic, it won't, it just further enhances it.
