I left this in the cupboard sandwiched between the likes of V for Vendetta, Spawn and The Punisher for a fortnight before I had the courage to watch it.
I can’t bring myself to buy the originals for my comic book collection as they’re so dated and hard to watch, and I had such high hopes for this with modern technology being what it is I was afraid I’d be disappointed.

I wasn’t completely crushed, the effects are as good as expected, and tied in very well with the older films so as not to make them look even more horribly dated than they already do, Kryptonite still looks like a giant slab of the cake-decorators favourite - angelica.
The story is well scripted, remember this brings Superman to a whole new generation who probably haven’t watched the originals and the ‘recaps’ were well incorporated into the storyline so that us oldies didn’t get bored and the youngsters weren’t left wondering how Kal-El got here in the first place.

The story moves along very nicely and even prompted an ‘Ooh look out’ from me so it must also be quite absorbing :o)

Superman was never even close to being my favourite superhero. He’s far too clean cut, I much prefer the darker Batman/Blade/Punisher type heroes.
That’s why I think this film is definitely one for the kids, shiny happy superhero saves the day. You don’t see anyone actually bite the dust I don’t think, and Lois Lane must be made of rubber in this one to have walked away without a scratch from the horrific situations she manages to get into (in true superhero’s bit of fluff style).
It’s a 12 but I’d have let my kids watch this one whatever their age. No blood, no swearing, no naughtiness. Don’t take my word for it though, as always watch it first to see if you think it’s suitable for your own youngsters :o)

Nice to see Clark Kent being geeky again

I liked the previous Superman films, well at least 1 and 2 were great, 3 was OK but 4 was terrible. Naturally I had to see this one. There were a lot of reviews that said there was no chemistry between the two leads, the lad was trying to hard to impersonate Christopher Reeve etc., but I thought it was pretty good.
The film seemed to whiz by and I enjoyed Brandon Routh's charmingly geeky Clark Kent (a trait that was lacking in the Dean Cain incarnation of Superman), but didn't especially warm to Lois Lane. Overall I thought it probably wasn't as good as the recent Spiderman films or the first 2 Superman films, but it was a big improvement on the 3rd and 4th Superman films. Recommended.

  Superman Returns (DVD)

As a huge fan for many years, as a child dashing to the local newsagent to pick up the latest DC Comic, to my teens watching the three films staring the late great Christopher Reeves, the spectre of a new Superman film made my heart miss a beat. Not being able to get to see it on the big screen, I waited anxiously for the DVD release. I would normally rent a DVD first, to see if I wanted to buy it, but I knew this would be different, and I wasn’t disappointed.
Superman Returns is about the return of the Man of Steel and finding out all of the events that have happened when he was gone. Which he finds out the momentary absence has impacted on Earth and how they still ask for a saviour. Yet Superman’s rival Lex Luthor, the egotistical rich maniac devises a plan to take over the world and bring Superman down. Clark Kent later finds out that his long time love Lois Lane has moved on which creates a love triangle between her partner and Superman. During the absence of the last son of Krypton, Lex Luthor is plotting a plan that would take away the powers of Superman which would let him become into a mere mortal and also creating land to easily form. The story is incredible and sticks true to the Superman comics.
In summary, this is a magnificent adaptation that puts audiences to the edge of their seat watching the 2 hour and 35 minute movie. The time of the film might sound long but it goes by faster than a speeding bullet. I have been waiting for this movie for a long time and I am pleased to finally see a great and spectacular movie for the return of the heroic Superman. There are very few flaws or that of any that can be noticed throughout the movie. The abilities that Superman has in his arsenal are perfectly adapted into the movie. Superman is visually breath taking with the intense battle sequences and the moving performances by the actors. There is no doubt that Superman will be a hit and resolve in many sequels to come.

This double disc edition of Superman Returns ticks all the right boxes for the comic book/movie fan, Brenden Routh gives us a believable Clark Kent/Superman taking the cape over from Christopher Reeves, this movie sits in well after Superman II (Ignoring 3 and 4)

better than the others made but never the same as the lois and clark series

It's too long, but then so-called 'event movies' always have been.Nearly 20 years have passed since the Man of Steel was last impersonated on screen by the definitive Superman, the late Christopher Reeve, and back in 1987 everyone agreed that the preachy, soporific, underpowered Superman IV: The Quest for Peace was the last fizzle of the series. It was inevitable, however, that after 9/11 America's greatest superhero would come back to protect the threatened city of Metropolis. Significantly, Superman Returns specifies an absence of five years and it hits the screen running, or rather triumphantly marching, to John Williams's stirring 'Superman Theme'. The new film is dedicated to Reeve and his late wife, Dana, who had both demonstrated superhuman courage after his tragic riding accident in 1995. The producers have found in Brandon Routh an ingenuous, all-American actor who also has the smoothly contoured, planed-down looks of a comic-book hero and is as unknown to us as was Reeve in 1978.

  better than expected
Review created: 22/03/08

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I was expecting the worst, so was very pleased to see it lived up to the billing and hype it got.

Unlike Spider-Man and Batman, they didn't re-invent Superman. Instead, the story continues from where the Christopher Reeve films left off all those years ago. At first I was a little disappointed with this, because with both Batman and Spider-Man their stories have been re-invented to make them relevant to today.

However, watch the film and you'll be under no illusions there really wasn't another way for them to go about it. Unlike Batman and Superman, there's nothing about Superman that really needs to be updated to make it relevant to today, apart from the way the villains fight, and in this film they did that without making it look out of place.

The film takes place after Superman has been gone for some time, but returns to Earth where little has changed, except for the people close to him - Louise Lane and Lex Luther.

The film gives great respect to the originals in both the story and style, but the special effects are far better than they ever were back when Mr Reeves was running around with his underwear over his trousers!

If you're a Superman fan, then you've probably already seen it and know how good it is. If you've not seen it because you feel it will ruin the magic, it won't, it just further enhances it.

  Superman Returns

Superman explodes back onto the big screen with this brilliant sequel from X-MEN director Bryan Singer . With clever dialogue, a plausible story and incredible special effects, this film will leave you in no doubt, that the Man of Steel has indeed returned.

Newcomer Brandon Routh dons the tights and cape this time and picks up five years after the late, great, Christopher Reeve left off in Superman II (this film wisely pretends that Superman III and IV never took place). Shortly after the events in II, astronomers discovered the whereabouts of Superman’s home planet of Krypton. Superman left Earth without even a goodbye to Lois Lane to look for survivors. At the beginning of this chapter, Superman crashes through the atmosphere and lands in a field outside his Earth mother Martha Kent’s home in Smallville, Kansas.

Five years is a long time and Superman finds that an awful lot has changed. As the bespectacled Clark Kent, he gets his old job back as a journalist at ‘The Daily Planet’ and hopes to rekindle his romance with fearless reporter Lois Lane. What he finds instead, is Lois in a longtime relationship with Editor Perry White’s nephew Richard White ( James Marsden) , Lois also has a five year old son named Jason (Tristan Leabu). To make matters worse, Lois was so hurt at being abandoned by Superman that she wrote an article – “Why the World Doesn’t Need Superman”, for which she has won a Pulitzer Prize.

It is not long however before Superman has to save Lois yet again (she seriously should think about staying in a bit more…); when a NASA shuttle test launch from the top of a plane goes badly wrong, Superman has to spring into action. Face to face for the first time in years, Lois’ feelings for Superman re-emerge and this sends her settled life spiraling out of control.

It wouldn’t be a proper ‘Superman’ film without a role for his bald nemesis Lex Luthor Kevin Spacey . In the five years that Superman was away, Lex has been released from prison on a technicality – Superman was a witness however he never showed up for a hearing when he was called to testify.
