Album Notes Sunny Day Real Estate: Jeremy Enigk (vocals, guitar); Dan Hoerner (guitar, background vocals); Joe Skyward (bass, background vocals); William Goldsmith (drums).Recorded live in Eugene, Oregon on May 26, 1999.It's hard to explain just what makes Sunny Day Real Estate such an appealing live band, but anyone who has attended one of the group's thunderous shows could account for why there had been a clamor among fans for a live album ever since the band's classic 1994 debut, DIARY. LIVE followed three studio albums, a breakup, a reunion, and the replacement of the band's original bassist. LIVE was recorded in Eugene, Oregon on May 26, 1999. Its 11 tracks demonstrate a perfect balance between the group's escalating and receding melodic guitars and the tenderly ferocious vocals of Jeremy Enigk. There is a relatively even representation of material from the group's three albums, with a predictable focus on the post-reunion HOW IT FEELS TO BE SOMETHING ON. While it would be nice to hear live renditions of some of the group's early numbered songs, that's just wishful thinking; LIVE boasts a nearly perfect set list, from the pleadingly beautiful opener, "Pillars," to the tender finale, "Days Were Golden." The between-song banter to the crowd, like the band's music, is endearingly sincere. Perhaps it is this sincerity that makes Sunny Day Real Estate such a galvanic live act.
Editorial Reviews 3.5 stars out of 5 - ...longer, heavier 'guitar workouts' that bring some sort of bizarre Built To Spill/Seventies hard rock amalgam to mind....it's the finest Sub Pop album since Pond's 1993 debut. Melody Maker (01/18/2000)
