Superb first album for the New Yorkers, at first listening, enjoyable, but, at first, you think, what's all the fuss about? 'Take it or leave it' a stand-out track for me at first listen. Listening a second or third time will have you hooked, as the complexity and subtleties start to come through the brash guitars and driving drums. Addiction follows soon after. Superb drum sound on the album. Compelling and absolutely essential listening, don't delay, catch up on the 21st Century today and enjoy!

This is one of the most critically acclaimed debut albums of the decade and it rightfully deserves that reputation. Julian's 'fuzzy' vocals blanket over the simple yet effective combination of guitar chords, melody and catchy bass line in such a unique way that you just can't stop listening.

I suppose all I can conclude is that The Strokes are pioneers of the modern indie generation. Without them, bands like 'The Cribs' would not even exist. The Strokes shaped an era.

Congratulations guys!

The Strokes- Is This it , well I can tell You it is !, featuring the clasic single "Last Night", The record that showed The World Rough Trade where back in form! and that Albert Hammond had a son, that Son A.H.Jnr plays " A mean guitar & along with Nick Valensi they Rock Out like it's going out of fashion (don't worry it's not by the way!), The rhythm section (Nikoli Fraiture on bass & Fab Moretti on drums)keep it solid at the back leaving frontman Julian Casablancas to do what He does best and that He most certainly does , BUY IT!!!, Pete(Mole)Morris.

This CD is a must for anyone. If you haven't been living in a cave for the past 10 years then you'll have heard 'last night' from this album but the album has so much more to offer than just the singles. I've always been a fan of the band (need to go see them) but never got round to owning this one. Seriously guys if you had to get one strokes album THIS IS IT.

  first and best strokes album
Review created: 23/01/09

had this for years on mp3, it sounds much better on cd though.
its an album written entirely by casablanca, he's obviusly got a
large record collection, you can hear nearly every punk/garage band
from the last 40 yrs here, big rip off copyists ?
not really, what the strokes do is very simple and effective, they just
play their songs, no fuss, no studio trickery.
the set of songs is as strong as any album of the last ten yrs and the
whole affair is ridiculous fun from the get go.
highly recommended.

The Strokes Debut Album - Simply Superb
Review created: 01/01/09
by:

Every once in a while a band comes along that can help define the style and taste of a generation. They can inspire a new wave of budding musicians to emulate their idols. The Beatles, The Sex Pistols and Nirvana are just some of this elite group. In 2001, straight out of New York came a sound so raw and fresh that it did just what The Beatles et al. have managed. Is This It is a perfect marriage of Garage and Indie Rock. From seminal anthem Last Nite to the easy charm of Someday, the album just brims with a revolutionary sound. A truly seminal album, worthy of a place in everybody's CD collection. A must have!

I am surprised there is a record company willing to record this.
It sounds like a band of 10 year olds rehearsing in their fathers garage round the corner.
Crap

A perfect example of superb muscianship
Review created: 07/06/08

Simply one of the best albums I have ever listened to, the songs are catchy and the Strokes are such an awesome band as there talent and lyrical genius is beyond most other bands today. This album serves as a starter to there other two albums which again do not dissapoint. Timeless classics on this album include Last Nite, Someday, Soma and new york city cops. Pure Genius!

A great first album from a band i've only just taken a shine to, heard 'Hard to Explain' twice in a week and and wanted it instantaneously after that.
Some other great songs on the album as well, in particular 'Alone, Together', 'New York City Cops' and 'The Modern Age' as well as the released singles; 'Someday', 'Last Nite', and the breathtaking 'Hard to Explain' - a contender for greatest song of the 21st century despite only being released in 2001. In the 99 years that follow, not many songs will top that one!!!
Overall an album highly recommended for anyone who wishes to get into The Strokes

Thanks for reading!

An awesome album by an awesome band. If your a fan of The Strokes, their debut album is an essential buy. You'll be gripped by the edgy riffs and raw solos complemented almost beautifully by Julian Casablancas' (what a fantastic surname) attitude filled slurs. New York City Cops and Last Nite stand out for me as being really incredible but there really isn't a bad song on the album. So go forth and buy if you know whats good for you.

  This Is Not It!
Review created: 10/06/06

From the first track, which happens to be the title track, listeners know they're in for a treat. As the Britpop genre came to a close and Nirvana had ended there seemed to be a gap in the market, a space for something new. Who filled that space? The Strokes with the eclectic jaggedy guitar rifs, the bass solos, the perfect drumbeat all combined with Julian Casablancas' droning make them the perfect band. Although it seems like everyone is doing their own thing and unaware of the other band members it all fits together exactly. The Strokes brought something new to the music scene with their jacket, jeans tie and unkempt hair they were the new definition of cool and it was reflected unequivocally in their music. They completed invented a genre of music that gave birth to the new Indie bands such as Franz Ferdinand, The Editors, The Paddingtons, The Departure, The Killers and The Bravery and may they be thanked for it.

Particular album highlights - 'Barely Legal' 'Modern Age' 'Hard to Explain' 'Last Nite'
Buy this if you like The Smiths or The Ramones or any of the bands listed above.
