Album Notes Stroke 9: Luke Esterkyn, John McDermott (vocals, guitar); Greg Gueldner (bass); Eric Stock (drums).San Francisco indie rockers Stroke 9 are all about the song. The band forgoes gimmicks, cliches, and any attempts to focus publicity on a single star member. The group's passion is for addictive melodies and short, harmony-heavy rock songs, and on NASTY LITTLE THOUGHTS, Stroke 9 delivers. "Tail of the Sun" is gently poetic, simple, and dynamic. The tale of a lover's jealousy is passionately recounted in "Little Black Backpack." The bittersweet and unshakable hook in "Letters" tugs at heartstrings as guitarist/vocalist Luke Esterkyn sings, "Sooner or later all the songs that make you shake will be by me." Stroke 9's strongest asset is its radio-friendly choruses, demonstrated most clearly on "City Life." Even director Ron Howard instinctively saw the raw talent of the band and recruited its members for his movie EdTV. Following in the footsteps of one-time tourmates Third Eye Blind, Stroke 9 is poised to make a lasting artistic impression with its sensitive, infectious pop-rock.
