God is trying to tell the Vatican about the truth of Jesus Christ using a trendy New York hairstylist who happens to be an athiest. The trouble is, Frankie Page(Patricia Arquette) loves being who she is, but when she's afflicted with the stigmata her coffee turns bitter and her life becomes a misery, all thanks to her Mom who innocently sends her a sacred stolen rosery from South America linked to the Gospel of St Luke, claimed to be the actual words of Jesus Christ suppressed by the Catholic Church as Heresy.
Unbeknown to Frankie, who thinks the rosary is a necklace, she becomes the personification of St Frances of Assisi the first stigmatist who had two stigmata and lived to a ripe old age - get five and you die! By the middle of the film Frankie already has three!
Patricia Arquette plays the part of Frankie with unselfconscious feminine charm and raw emotion, she drips blood as nails are hammered into her wrists and feet flesh flayed in a crowded subway train disco thorns spiked into her head as she accelerates into chaos the evil Cardinal trying to save her through strangulation. Arquette is a fine performer, one of those actors who never seems to 'act'. Her portrayals always fit the character she is playing and appear natural and unrehearsed, a fine performance.
The mood of the film is sinister. Theologically it poses many unanswered questions. For the skeptic it's just superstition, but, the sum total of its construction ie. direction, editing, lighting and special effects are very creative, making it much more than just another horror film. For those interested in the darker side of religious experience, temporal as well as spiritual, it is a thought provoking entertaining movie. The musical score however could have been a bit more imaginative for a film of this quality.
