Word Gets Around is the Stereophonics' debut album; and such is the benchmark they set for themselves; many have said that they have struggled to better it. In this writer's opinion, this album is only bettered by the follow up; Performance and Cocktails. Just. Not bad for a band with 5 albums under their belt.
The album kicks off with 'A Thousand Trees' which ties in with the albums title; a tale of how rumour and gossip spreads like wildfire in small Welsh villages. The song rightly says that one bad rumour (A match) can burn a Thousand Trees (People). The song itself starts off quite tame but then explodes into a fantastic live sing-along.
'Looks like Chaplin', 'Not up to you' and 'Check my eyelids for holes' are the albums more mediocre tracks, but when sandwiched between fantastic tracks such as 'Local Boy in the Photograph', 'Same size feet' and 'Last of the Big Time Drinkers' it doesnt seem to matter. 'Local Boy...' in particular is a fantastically heartfelt song about a young boy's suicide on a railway track; which when coupled with 'Billy Davie's Daughter' (About a young girl's suicide)really make you think about Kelly Jones' inspiration for these songs. It seems little welsh villages aren't always so quaint.
Then there's the masterpiece of the album; 'Traffic' which flexes Jones' songwriting muscles to full extent. Who knew being stuck in a traffic jam could lead to such epiphany.
The tracks are spread out such that the best ones aren't all clumped together; and credit must go also to 'Goldfish Bowl' and 'Too Many Sandwiches,' a hilariously ironic song about a wedding reception. This sprinkling of tracks make the album so much more listenable when it gets into its not so great parts. But even then, it's pretty great.
