This really doesnt need saying to the followers of Steely Dans music over the last decades, but for anyone who is unfamiliar, this album is a great middle period introducer to the art of the most influential and under appreciated band to grace western music.
Forget the beatles, these boys have left indellible marks on virtually every band in the lst thirty years. That guitar riff you like so much? The subtle brass punctuation? That backing singer sounds like Michael MacDonald in his doobie days! Its all the influence of the Dan, and for a band to attract the attention of the greatest male popular music voice of the latter 20th Centure speaks volumes. All work of the dan/ Listen to the Fez-classic- Green earrings, perhaps a hint of what steely dan were about five years before. Best track, Dont take me alive for sure,Haitian divorce you will know. The caves of altamira and Dont take me alive are an example of Fagen and Becker lyrics at the extreme. If you like the lyrics try Gaucho a later album 'fur' size (fine coat ??)Title track is superb, think The Wyndward arrives in late 1950's on englands shores.
Buy this album. Listen to it twice. Dont try to work out the cover art.
Put your hand in your pocket and buy all the other albums.
You wont be dissapointed and you will feel oddly at home with what you hear.
