Bright British comedy, set in 1985, about a lad whose dream is to appear on University Challenge and his adventures - personal and especially romantic - on the way to one of the quiz show's hot seats. Great 80s soundtrack. Among the "extras" is the chance for you to answer some questions from "Bamber Gascoigne".

This film seemed to have been made in a hurry. I read the novel by David Nicholls which made me burst out with laughter frequently. The film didnt have much depth and without reading the book I doubt people would glean much from the film plot.

I bought this dvd for my husband mainly, as he had asked my daughter to
record it when it was on one of their channels, but unfortunately this had not happened. He was delighted with it.. we both enjoyed watching it and found the story to be entertaining and the actors all very good. We will probably watch it again in the future, so it can't be too bad!

This is a nerdy, comical film, set in the 80s.
Makes you cringe and rejoice along with the main character, Brian.
If you have read the book then you can't help but feel a little disappointed that it feels crammed in to the hour and a half - not quite as good as it could be - but good all the same.

Film has an amazing story line, that is easy to relate to. it takes you through the life of a young boy, and how different events affect him and what he wants to achieve!

An extremely funny film, especially the lead characters mates...!

a top watch and must have for any collection!

Fair Enough - The Young Ones 'Bambi' Anyone ?
Review created: 12/03/08
by:

The Love interest is dubious, the actors are all curiously older-looking than their characters, the script ignores a lot of the humour of the book in its effort to produce a bog-standard rom-com - and the script is pure 'The Young Ones' 'Bambi' -the one where rick, vyvyan, neil and 'mike the cool person' get on University Challenge too !

They both even feature Motorheads 'Ace of Spades' !

P.S. If the team from 'Starter for Ten' got to compete against Scumbag College from the Young Ones; now that WOULD be a movie !

If you loved the mid '80s, and you love The Cure, you will not be disappointed with this film!!! James McAvoy excells as a university fresher, trying and failing not be pretentious, all the while thinking he is in with a chance with the babe of the college! The film is good, the soundtrack is great!!!

  Fun comedy
Review created: 04/02/08

A lightweight, frothy comedy, won't challenge your intellect but good to put in the DVD player if you just want a fun, undemanding night in. Why did I buy it? Ahh, that was the presence of Charles Dance in the cast - and this is the movie in which he does a (very brief) nude scene!

Fantastic! A real feel good film.

This is a must see for anyone growing up or going to University in the late 80's and early 90's. It's set among all the political events of the time and brings back memories of all those uncertainties and excitements that you would have gone through.

Perfect to put your feet up to on a Friday night with a bottle of wine. It'll set you up for the weekend!

I loved this film - it's more than just a comedy about a University Challenge team; the film is quite moving at times. The humour is subtly done, at times the jokes take you by surprise. Definitely a film I could watch again and again, mainly because of the chemistry between the two main characters.

  Not too soppy uni reminiscing.

So I'm a little baised as I was actually an extra in this film (yep, last scene where he's running through the protesters I'm the girl in the white batwing jumper, blink and you'll miss it).
The film is ok, there are some pretty good laughs and also some pretty awful cringes, James McEvoy does a good turn as per usual and it is great to see Catherine Tate in another straight role.
Ridley Scott wont be shaking in his boots, but all in all this is enjoyable to watch and have a laugh too.
Oh, and the soundtrack is great, despite the fact that the film is set in 1985 and contains songs from like 1987.
