In fact you could say it spawned two series, Stargate SG1 & Stargate: Atlantis, but I think the second is more a spin-off of the first. Anyhoo, the movie has a sci-fi theme, and is heavy on the action. Also, there's a '2001: A Space Odyssey' kind of concept along the lines of aliens influencing Earth's development. The end of the movie is conclusive, but leaves it wide open for a sequel, which did not happen strangely. But now we have the TV show, which is probably the best format. All in all, this is a great movie. Cool sci-fi action, not to much thinking to be done, as is a common complaint from some people, and a star turn from Kurt Russel.
