  Stargate interest, hobby fantasy
Review created: 12/12/06

I've had a DVD player for a while, and I wanted a copy of the film on DVD,
to replace my VHS collection

Basically speaking, I like most science fiction! But not Science Fantasy, whether its a Film like Stargate, or made for TV like Deep space 9,
in fact anything to do with space, time travel, and the future,
and I'll sit and watch it, providing that I've got the time to do it,

So why do I like Stargate? I like Stargate and its two spin off series,
Stargate SG1, and Stargate Atlantis, I like the balance of the Film,
The way the film was put together, unlike some of the programs and films I've seen, I find Stargate to be intelligent, well thought out, entertaining and enjoyable to watch again and again, which means for me that the producers and directors got the mixture between the past the presence and the future just right, I'm getting a little ahead with this, the original film was about the Stargate which was found in Gaza Egypt in 1926, it was transported to a secret Underground Nuclear silo, deep inside a mountain in the United States,

Doctor Daniel Jackson was recruited as a translator, to translate the Cymbals on the Stargate, He helped figure out how to open the Stargate, to another world, A world halfway across the known Universe in the Caleb Galaxy,
the team went through the Stargate but could return because they had to find the Cymbals for the return journey, which would allow them to make the return home, once they got to the other side or the wormhole their Adventures began.

I won't spoil the ending for you, if you've not seen the Movie, you are missing a rare treat, and it’s an excellent film.

has the exellent dts sound experience. 9 extra minutes of footage and behind the scenes extras. if you love the recent stargate sg1 or atlantis, then go back 11 years and see how the programmes you love now started then. a must for any fan, and first time viewer.

  Simply stunning sci-fi blockbuster.
Review created: 02/07/09

The movie that inspired one of the best (and longest running) Sci-Fi TV shows ever (Stargate SG1).

I'm aiming this review at those of you who may have grown up watching Stargate SG1, but somehow missed the 1994 movie that inspired it all.

As much as we all love cheeky chappie Richard Dean Anderson in the role of Jack O'Neill, it should be noted that Kurt Russell also played a great turn at everyone's favourite space soldier. And Michael Shanks' Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG1 was actually an inspired rip-off of James Spader's performance in the same role in this fantastic 1994 movie. And in that I'm not insulting Shanks, as that was exactly what the producers wanted....a James Spader-esque Dr Jackson who was prepared to commit long term to the role. Shanks did just that, and did it very well indeed.

The movie version is somewhat different to the series. Or should I say that they made the TV series somewhat different to the movie. The Goa'uld of SG1 became snake like symbiotic/parasitic beings living inside Human and Jafa hosts, while in this screen prequel they are seen as much more traditional alien fare, but again parasitically using host humans to live out their rather long lives of getting up to no good across the galaxy. Also, the main SG1 characters of Samantha Carter and Teal'c are not to be seen here.

The movie is literally based around Dr Jackson being brought in to decipher the ancient text buried with the Stargate, which was uncovered in Egypt during the 1940's. The Air Force and government experts had been trying to do this for a long time, and in a desperate throw of the dice they turn to the misunderstood genius of Dr Jackson - as they know he knows ancient Egypt like no one else on Earth.....and knows it in a way that inescapably makes him invaluable to their efforts of getting the Stargate working again.

I won't go further than that basic start of the story, as I don't want to spoil it for the small few of you who might not have seen it yet, or perhaps can't remember it, but suffice to say this is all just a prelude to a fantastic space adventure.....and one which I think should be required sci-fi viewing. It's fantastic.

I'll end by saying that UK DVD buyers should try and get hold of the now out of print 'Director's Cut', as not only is it slightly fleshed out with a good few more minutes of story, but it also contains a DTS audio track....which always makes a DVD a better home theatre viewing than it is with Dolby Digital alone.

So what you waiting for? Go get eBaying for it!

An excellent version of the film that secretly everyone walked out of the cinema thinking would have been better as a TV series (then they did!). Good, solid blockbuster material but... Not a great transfer, the definative one must surely come now Atlantis has ended. Watch this space!

Review created: 06/09/08

One of my favourite movies featuring James Spader as the egyptologist Daniel Jackson whose theories about the building of pyramids pointing to non-human origin attract the interest of the military who are struggling to decipher cymbals on an ancient artefact discovered years before... they journey through the Stargate and encounter a civilization subordinated to an Egyptian god...

  Egyptology from Beyond the Stars
Review created: 09/07/08

Stargate is so good it spawned a very popular TV series. That's a pretty good recommendation right there! In fact you could say it spawned two series, Stargate SG1 & Stargate: Atlantis, but I think the second is more a spin-off of the first.

Anyhoo, the movie has a sci-fi theme, and is heavy on the action. Also, there's a '2001: A Space Odyssey' kind of concept along the lines of aliens influencing Earth's development. The end of the movie is conclusive, but leaves it wide open for a sequel, which did not happen strangely. But now we have the TV show, which is probably the best format.

All in all, this is a great movie. Cool sci-fi action, not to much thinking to be done, as is a common complaint from some people, and a star turn from Kurt Russel.

Stargate The Movie Great to watch
Review created: 23/04/08

This is the pilot to the SG1 television series and is a must for anyone wanting to watch the series for the first time, it gives the history to the Stargate its discovery and its first know use....you will have to watch the series to find out if the gate had been used earlier in than the film show.

Brilliant cast and story line well directed and the music is award winning.

Phill

  Excellent film
Review created: 13/04/08

This is an all time great movie that a ton of people never get to see as it wasnt ever that well known.
A film packed full of great actors like Kirt Douglas and James Spader make this a must see from the start.

The story is very thought provoking and goes into an area that no other film has gone before. Making you think about ancient egypt and the pyramids in a completely diffrent light.

If you like sci fi in any way shape or form then you must see this film, if you like egypt and the mystery surrounding its history then you must see this film.

Go on from the film to Stargate SG1 and Atlantis and you can while away weeks of your life with sheer enjoyment.

Finally dont rent it BUY IT.

Stargate - A must see for all the family, even the dog.
Review created: 29/02/08

This movie has it all. It's like The Mummy meets Star Trek, or Indiana Jones meets Star Wars. It was that good they made TEN seasons of a spin - off (SG-1), and that takes some going. And now they have followed this up with he equally impressive, Stargate Atlantis. After collecting the SG1 dvds, I thought it was time to buy this little beauty to have for the collection, as I only have it on VHS at the moment, which I watched recently. And no, it doesnt loose its magic.
