This is simply one of the most enchanting films ever made. With a rock solid story by Neil Gamain (even if you have seen the film, still read the book as it is so very very good. Actually as a plug for that author read anything by Neil Gamain and you will not be dissapointed. He is a very proficient writer), fantastic turns from pretty much all of the cast, a great beautiful setting and wickedly funny dialogue this is a definate must see of a film.

Despite other reviewers comments I can say that my young kids (10 and 7) loved this movie as well; they are fans of The Princess Bride and Labrynth and this is not entirely dissimilar. Watch enchanted as a story of true love enfolds in a fairytale world (actually the highlands of Scotland - pah who needs New Zealand for beautiful scenery!). Play spot the character actor as more and more recognisable quality actors pop up in supporting role after supporting role. A nice, meandering, simple watch. The plot is very good, but largely irrelevant in that this is definate 'all together on the sofa on a Sunday' watching. Safe and entertaining. Without giving anything away my family were all shouting at the screen as the main character is rushing back to the 'wall' to save his love before it's too late. A fantastic modern day fairytale.

Stunning, brilliant fantasy adventure that the whole family will enjoy (even the slightly scary bits). It's a colourful, exciting adaptation of Neil Gaiman's graphic novel about a young Victorian shop assistant who enters a magical parallel world. Tremendous cast includes Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro, Charlie Cox, Sienna Miller, Ricky Gervais and Peter O'Toole.

This is a great film. We enjoyed it all the more as it was one of the first HD-dvds we imported before Christmas from the States. We watched it a few days before xmas and it certainly is one of those family type movies that you can go back to time and time again. Deniro is just superb and really shows us his acting talents... Totally opposite to the gangster role he is renowned for!! I will focus more on the technical aspects of the movie as the picture transfer is superb and the sound and colours is totaly made for HD if you have it.... It really is a shame that HD-dvd lost in the format war to Bluray as the features were superior (always ahead by a few months, the prices were better and because the format was region free I was able to order this from the States months before the UK release and only paid £16.99.... Still at least there is one format to focus on now... BTW I will stick to DVD only for now as I wait to see if BLURAY becomes region free...

Anyway back to the film.... This is a great colorful, mystical and magical romp.. A good old fashioned family movie that I think you will enjoy. definately one for the collection whichever format or version you decide to buy..

This is an excellent fairy tale film, that is suitable for all of the family. All of my family enjoyed the film and we would recomend it for any night of the week. Ricky Jarvis stars and is his usual self making the film that extra little bit more enjoyable.

  Star is what you are!
Review created: 08/03/08

This film easily would win 5 stars if it was a hotel. With starring roles going to Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert de Niro. You cannot help but laugh and love this film.
It is the story of Tristan (played by Charlie Cox) who has promised to bring a star to the girl that he hopes to woo. The adventure begins however when he discovers that the star is actually a celestial being who he must protect at all costs from Michelle Pfeiffer, a witch out to get the beauty's youth and so make herself young again.
Robert de Niro's performance is out of this world and totally out of character. He plays a pirate desperate that noone should know his secret when in fact the whole crew knows and goes along with it. It is I think Robert de Niro's finest hour. When you think of the name Robert de Niro you immediatly think of tough gansters who would stop at nothing to kill you and it would all be in a days work for them. Here he plays a soft marshmallow character trying desperatly to give the impression that he wouldn't think twice about killing or torturing when in fact he would rather go and put on a corset and dress complete with fan and stockings and have a nice cup of tea and a slice of cake than kill or maime. Those are words that just don't appear in this pirate's bourdoir and if they did would be immediatly slung out along with last years gowns.
It is a totally enjoyable film for both big kids and little ones alike. Definately one to keep the kids quiet as long as you also provide plenty to eat and drink so that they can go on automatic pilot and grab the goodies while they are engrossed in the film.
I gaureentee that you won't be disappointed.

  Are we human because we gaze at the stars?
Review created: 26/02/08

I have just gotten around to watching this film today and was actually amazed that there were reviews already.
I'm 16 and PG always tends to put me off watching films but I decided I'd go as it was something to do, I loved it.

I think the main reason I loved this movie was because of the amazing actors that were involved and the new actors that shone brightly in it (no pun intended).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Plot
The film starts in a small village of Wall, a village which gets its name from the wall surrounding it. When young Dunstan Thorne decides to cross this wall he finds a doorway between England and the magical kingdom of Stormhold.
There he meets a princess, who is captured by a witch and will only be free when the witch is dead. He arrives back in Wall and 9 months later he gets a present from the princess, a baby boy called Tristan.
18 years later Tristan has fallen in love with Victoria. On the week before her birthday they see a fallen star arrive on the other side of the wall and she says she'll marry him if he retrieves that star for her, before her birthday.
He uses the candle of Babylon, which he got from his mother and finds the fallen star he was looking for, but with only one catch, she's fully alive and talking and Tristan tries to take her back to wall, but along the way they are stopped by people in Stormhold that want the fallen star.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Actors
I myself thought the acting in the film was brilliant, through the first hour or so you think the lead is another Orlando Bloom, a floppy haired actor who shames us British people when he acts but Charlie Cox was surprisingly good. He receives a new hair-do throughout the middle of the film and his persona just changes and you actually begin to see the great actor behind the Orlando Bloom likeness.

Claire Danes has always been a good actress in my eyes, like most people the first film I watched with her in was the wonderful Romeo & Juliet, but she has matured so much. She was the star of this movie; she did truly shine like only good stars do. She plays Yvaine, the fallen star who wants to get back home, the only way to do so is follow Tristan and go back to Wall.
Robert De Niro was another good actor in the film, I'm not always going to imagine him in drag now. He plays a gay pirate, who pretends to be evil for his reputation.

Michelle Pheifer was a bit of a disappointment in my eyes, I didn't think she delivered as well as the others did and was just quite terrible as the witch who goes looking for her star to make herself look younger.
There were some great cameo's in this film, Ricky Gervais like usual was fantastic, very funny. If you look closely David Walliams is throughtout the whole film as the princes brother's and is very funny like usual.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Story behind The Magic
Neil Gaiman wrote the original book which was written in four volumes, it was adapted into a screenplay by Matthew Vaughn & Jane Goldman, who is actually Jonathan Ross's wife.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Soundtrack
I don't know much about the soundtrack, all I know is the theme song at the end sent me running out of the cinema. Take That like usual ruin this beautiful film.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Other
This film is not just for kids, I was stupid to make that assumption but I really enjoyed it. It may have been too predictable for word
  Enchanting - I loved it.
Review created: 17/02/08
Neil Gaiman, who wrote Stardust, is a treasure of modern storytelling. This film of his novel is superbly realised and absolutely worth watching. It improves with repeated viewings, in fact.
Gaiman wanted to write an old-fashioned Edwardian fairy-story, full of flying ships and unicorns and evil witches, beautiful maidens and handsome young men coming of age and falling in love. So he crammed all of that and more into the story, and the film absolutely sparkles with the threads of the story and the characters. You may find many of the themes familar, but that's because it is supposed to be a traditional fairy tale. The fun is all in the polish and the performances.
It's a two hour film, which might be a bit long for younger children to sit through, and there are a couple of points where the action slows down (when the love affair develops) which kids will find fidgity. However the majority of the movie absolutely romps along, following the young hero on his quest to find a fallen star and bring it (her!) back to impress his girlfriend.
There are also some scream-aloud funny bits. Kids will love the boy-transformed-into-girl moment; adults will crease up at the sight of Robert de Niro doing the can-can. There's a sly wit about the whole film; look out for the bit about the drooping boobs...
Unlike many fantasy films you don't have to sit through endless trudging across hillsides in the rain. The quest is the backbone of the story but the joy of Stardust is the sheer creativity and richness of each scene. You can relax and leave the plot to get on with itself, and sit back and enjoy the superb performances (Michelle Pfeiffer is particularly good as the beautiful-evil old crone) and each sparkling scene.
Definitely worth watching several times, because you'll see much more of the detail with each viewing. If you didn't catch Stardust at the movies then that's a shame, because some of the dazzling quality of the effects will be lost at home. So watch it on the biggest screen you can -- and in HD if you've got it. This is one film that's definitely worth it.
Excellent entertainment for adults; young children might need a break halfway through. Afterwards, it's a film which will leave you feeling happy, uplifted. Not too many of them around, so make the most of it!
"Fairytale for adults" Stardust brings to the cinema a strain of magical fantasy that's rarely seen on screen, despite being wildly popular in written form. In the village of Wall, next door to fairyland, shop-boy Tristian woos the village beauty by promising to fetch her a star they see fall. On his quest to retrieve said star, which turns out to be a lovely, if angry young woman - the two encounter murderous princes, wicked witches, and lightning-poacher sky-pirates. Plus, of course, the essential fairytale ingredients of true destiny and hearts' desire
Charlie Cox as Tristian leads an excellent cast, effortlessly convincing as both shopboy of the start and swashbuckler of the finish, though co-star Claire Danes - the fallen star - tends towards the whingy. The stand-out performance comes from Michelle Pfieffer who, as evil sorceress Lamia, ages from preening beauty to vengeful crone before our very eyes. Yes, there's a Ricky Gervaise cameo, but hey, you get to see him meet a grisly end. Now that's magical.
"RIOT OF ORIGINALITY"
Massively pretty to look at, Stardust bursts with (original novel) author Gaiman's trademark invention. Every shot glitters with detail, every character hints at volumes of tales about them that could be told - and quite possibly are, at least in Gaiman's head. In places, this riot of originality almost cramps the story - the many dazzling distractions the film offers sometimes get in the way of the pace. Still, it's rare to have the opportunity to complain about too much invention.
I thought this was a really good family film.. It seemed to take a while to get going but once it did we where all enthralled by it. The plot was good and more to it than origially thought. Robert DeNero was excellent - I will not look at him the same again when I see him in a serious roll.
I bought this film for my dauthger as we didn't get to see it at the cinema. I would expect the affects are excellent on the big screen.
Would recommend a viewing.
This film had such a good write up i decided to dedicate a wine night to it, but to be honest myself and my guests were left devastated. The acting was poor to say the least and even the story line failed to engross the audience.
It's not the worst film i've ever seen but i would advise you to have a 2nd choice of film that night as it's hard to watch this one to the end.
This is the rarest of things; a postmodern fairytale that works.
That i know of, only this an The Princess Bride can claim that compliment, leaving others like Legend and Willow floundering in the mire of late eighties pretention.
The story is that of a young man infatuated with a shallow girl in his village that makes a promise to fetch a fallen star to win her hand.
What transpires, however, is a magical adventure where opscotch is played with cliches and in the end you're left feeling happy and tearful.
An adaptation of the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, Stardust brings a strong cast together for an enjoyable family feast, with plenty to enjoy.
Stardust mixes in romance and adventure, all in a fantasy movie guise, as it follows Tristan on his quest to retrieve a fallen star for the beautiful Victoria. Only it soon becomes clear that there’s a lot more going on as Tristan makes his journey (not least a companion more diverting than the aforementioned Victoria). Michelle Pfeiffer, for instance, returns to high profile movie making (after quite a break) in the role of the evil witch, while there’s space too for Robert De Niro’s pirate and an odd cameo from Ricky Gervais.
Seemingly one of a wealth of family films that made it out of the blocks off the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Stardust doesn’t quite hit those heights, but it has quite a sporting go. It’s an uneven tale, albeit one told with enough passion and enthusiasm to encourage you to cut it some slack. And when it gets to the end of the last reel, it’s hard to feel shortchanged by what you’ve just seen.
For while Stardust has problems, it also has laughs, adventure, action and a whole lot in its corner to recommend it. And it is worth your time and attention
