  Every Saga has a Beginning ... !!!!!!!!

Like young Anakin's future the success of The Phantom Menace is clouded !!!!!

Having run an eBay community group for Star Wars for many months the subject of the Star Wars Episode 1 has often come up .....

Is Jar Jar Binks the most despised SW character ever ?????? Possibly yes !!!!!!
What on Earth happened in the design department during the creation of 'Yoda' ?????
Jake Lloyd ?????
The whole podrace to get parts for a spaceship to introduce threepio to link to tatooine plot tangent !!!!!!!!!!
The voices of the battle droids !!!!!!!!!
Midichlorians ??????????????
YOU GET THE IDEA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But then there are the many positive aspects of the film ...... Maul, Qui Gon Jinn, the Duel of the Fates, the battles, the locations ...... !!!!!!

For childhood fans of the Original Trilogy, the years of waiting had possibly led to too much expectation ...... but on the flipside, didn't Lucas owe these fans something much better ????????

As one friend of mine said recently , as long as it's Star Wars I would have been happy with anything !!!!!!!!!

The film isn't a failure but in trying to set up the storyline for Episodes 2 and 3 it often over explains ........ Maul's screen time is criminally reduced when the podrace just goes on and on !!!!! And although Lucas delivers SFX and the movie industry is in his debt ...... is there too much over reliance on CGI ?????

Other "artistic" aspects of the film are worryingly obvious ... the Yoda puppet from 1980's Empire Strikes Back is more lifelike than the Yoda that appears 1999's Episode 1 ... but in Episode 2 the CGI delivers a new improved Yoda ?????

Overall, Episode 1 serves as a vehicle to introduce the key players, the plot, the politics, the locations and the galaxy in which the Old Republic spoken about by Old Ben in 1977 still exist !!!

...... we all knew how the story ends and our frustrations about how the saga actually begins must be balanced by the fact that during Episode 2 and 3 the sense of Star Wars returns !!!!!!!

Episode 1 can't be ignored but in an online poll I ran, and others I have seen ... The Phantom Menace always comes bottom !!!!!!!

and this was the film that countless 30 plus year old's (like myself) had waited years for ..... the teaser trailers, the posters, the hype .... in 1983 (after seeing Return Of The Jedi) I knew that one day Episodes 1,2 and 3 would be made ..... Episode 1 simply failed to live up to the standard of the Original Trilogy
!!!!!

Thankfully , the prequels improved ......

As someone who watched the prequal trilogy soon after watching the original, I feel I can give a fairer opinion on the films than certain other fans, and I have to say that The Phantom Menace was a DVD worth buying.

The Storyline, In my Opinion, was fairly good, better once you see episodes 2 and 3, with some fantastic Lightsabre Duals and action scenes. The acting by Jake Lloyd could have been better in most places, but Ray Park's portrayal of Darth Maul was brilliant, and although there has been accusations of 'wooden acting' I think all the actors played their parts fairly well.

One major reason This Film didn't get 5 from me was Jar-Jar Binks. Fair enough, it was a good Idea to feature a character like this, but the ammount of Idiocy coming from him every 15 seconds is simply too much. I don't think anyone would have minded Jar-Jar if Lucas had simply featured less scenes with him messing about (sometimes totally unnecessarily), but like I say, he was shown far too often doing something stupid, which, in some cases, ruins the films atmosphere.

All in all, I think this is a great addition to the Star Wars Saga, and an enjoyable Sci-Fi film for kids and Adults, the DVD has great special features, and is well worth the price.

good film and any 1 who likes si-fi should give it a go
Review created: 04/10/08

What I like about this film is it's action scenes, superb special effects, and it's good story line. It's very easy to get into this film and when they start pulling out lightsavers and and fighting with sith lords it's hard not to fall in love with it. The whole star wars collection is a must have as you can watch them time and time and again. The reason I bought this dvd is I love the star wras films and decided I wanted to add them all to my dvd collection. This was the first one on my list as it is the first episode and wanted 2 buy them and watch them in order. It was being sold at a very good price so I didn't hesitate and bid straight away and fortunitly I was the wining bidder. If you are considering bidding on a similar item then I would definetly recomend episode 1 the phantom menace and any other star wars movie. If you are a fan of si-fi movies then I guarentee you will not be diassapointed.

A SUCKY FILM, WITH THE BEST CHARACTER EVER...A SHAME...
Review created: 21/09/08

so much poor acting. so much poor script. so much filler. a despiseable tag along character (jar jar binks). SO MUCH WAIT!!!!!
cheesy screen swipes are in abundance, a huge lack of action, pointless links to later episodes, (e.g. a pod race, justto make a spin off arcade game and involve the sexually ambiguous C3PO) and terrible enemies, (i.e the droids, so patheticly feeble they appear to be made of twigs).
HOWEVER, Darth Maul saves the day. the coolest star wars villain EVER, with A DOUBLE EDGED LIGHT SABRE?????!!!!! THA'S FUC*IN AWESOME!!!!! however, he only appears several times sadly, and the so called 'climactic battle' of the end does not do him justice.
George Lucas is incredibly stupid to kill Darth Maul in the end, (sorry for spoiling it), due to him being the highest sought after character in SW games and merchandise ever. he was the ONLY good thing in this film,
other than that, it sucked.

Not the best in the series of 6, but a good introduction to the story. 4-6 are still the best. In some places the story lines runs slowly through the plot, yet there are scenes where the action is reasonably pacey. More time could of been spent explaining the difference between the sith and jedi and less on the small boy, who was a bit annoying in parts.

My 7 year old son loves Star Wars and wanted the first episodes. I did tell him that these weren't the first ones, 4, 5 and 6 were, but he just looked at me as though I was daft :) The films have linked into the original stories really well and to my son the story is seamless. May the force be with you :)

TPM - Bashed for long enough?
Review created: 06/06/08

Badly criticized by ..... critics who love to overintellectualize a film - you might find this worth watching if you already are a Star Wars fan. People say GL was saving the best for later (later prequel episodes) and its true that there are some juvenile sequences in the movie. But the backstory of Sidious pulling the strings to push the current Supreme Chancellor out of the picture as a devious prelude to his future schemes is what MAKES this movie. Only Star Wars fans can think something of this - even if you're not so keen. the story is THERE. The pacing is bad, but there are moments in this film that prove to be pure eye candy. The end duel with Darth Maul vs. Obi Wan and Qui Gon Jinn is one of the best fight scenes ever put on film despite this movie's imperfections. I rate this film an 8 out of 10. I certainly wish that this review is justified. Anyways, this could be a see and see again amongst Star Wars fans --- with fastforwards that is. (What I said about the pacing)

  star wars
Review created: 25/05/08

i bought this for my 6 year old son as he got interested in star wars by playing the lego version on his playstation. he himself thinks it is brillant and has nearly all of them except the last one at the moment.

the story line is brillant and you can get behind the characters and especially watching the banter between c3-po and r2-d2 is excellant with the little quirkies they come out with. i would recommend it for anyone. i myself did find it hard to watch at first since the first one which came out was episode 4 new hope which i watched when i was a kid then when that triology ended he then brought out 1/2/3 afterwards so it was a bit hard to get back into it since i knew what was happening in the future

I bought it because I also bought the dual darth maul lightsaber and wanted to see it in action in the actual film.

I love darth maul in it but absolutly hate Jar Jar Binks, film would have been so much better without him IMO.

  Or...Star Wars: The Phantom Plot
Review created: 04/04/08
by:

Oh dear. As a 'child of Star Wars', I was so looking forward to the return of George Lucas as director of his creation. Three words describe the early exchanges of this film; awful, awful, awful. The basic premise is ropey at best and the dialogue is largely non-existent. This hideousness masks a manful attempt by Liam Neeson, who plays Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, to pull the film up from on it's backside and Ewan MacGregor's first stab at Obi-Wan Kenobi, where he might have tried less to 'be' Alec Guinness and could easily have succeeded in a masterful portrayal.

The live action actors are not the worst thing about this film, enter Jar Jar Binks - I still get flashbacks about this pitiful inclusion, clearly designed to ensnare a younger audience and guarantee additional merchandising revenue.

Enough griping, there are lots of things that will keep me coming back to this despite the flaws:
- some superb CGI, notably the pod race
- the scenes on Tattooine which render this opener quintessentially Star Wars
- the introduction of Darth Maul, complete with double-ended lightsaber
- the closing two-on-one lightsaber duel between the two Jedi and the aforementioned Maul
- hey, it IS Star Wars....

As much as I'd like to totally pan this, the eight year-old who sat and gasped at the sight of a Star Destroyer cruising overhead in the late 70's just wouldn't let me. Only just passes muster though.

If like me your a big Sci-Fi nut then this is deffinately the start of the ultimate series for you. In the first witness the rise of the trade federation and over the next few episodes watch it turn into the Evil Empire.

It's an excellent film with some great sound affects and acting well recommended.

I am a great fan of all the star wars films. The imagery, plot and special effects make star wars classic films that i enjoy watching from time to time, on cold rainy days when it is better to stay indoors, warm and enchanted with the magical fantasy films of Star Wars.

To get yourself a free iPhone all you have to do is follow the 3 easy steps:

Step 1 : Sign up for a free iPhone
Sign up at the link below to get your free iPhone. We recommend this free iPhone site because it's been TRIED and TESTED to work.

Step 2 : Try an advertiser's offer
Basically all you need to do in this step is complete one of the offers, this is where the freebie site make their money, if you complete an offer then the freebie site will recieve commission for it. So if you complete Coral which will only cost you £5 to complete, the freebie site gets £25 from Coral. The two best offers are Lovefilm Free DVD rental (rent two DVD's, keep them for about 2 days, send them back and then cancel the trial) and Coral (bet £5 on a sport). I would reccommend you do Coral as it credits in an hour and is really simple to do, Lovefilm however can become complicated and takes up to 2 weeks to credit! You can also try one of the other offers, most are gambling offers. Don't skip this step! You must complete this step to get your free iPhone!

I already got a free PS3, Wii, and XBOX Elite without even having to ask my friends for help - there's lots of people online who want a free iPhone like you! One of the easiest ways to get a referral is to do a favour for a friend and ask them to sign up in return. That way, you both can get a free iPhone!

Basic rules
Don't break these rules! This is the only reason that you won't get your free iPhone, so make sure you follow these rules!

- One account per household - don't use a public computer to sign up!
- Use real information - this is a proven legitimate site and they will not give out your information.
- Only complete each offer once! You cannot complete the same offer again, even for different freebies.
- Don't try to cheat the system. This site has been proven legitimate, and they will catch you if you try to cheat. If you do everything legitimately, by following this guide, you will get a free iPhone!

Thats all, just follow my guide and you will have your free iPhone in no time.
