Star Wars - Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace (DVD 2004)

Like young Anakin's future the success of The Phantom Menace is clouded !!!!!

Having run an eBay community group for Star Wars for many months the subject of the Star Wars Episode 1 has often come up .....

Is Jar Jar Binks the most despised SW character ever ?????? Possibly yes !!!!!!
What on Earth happened in the design department during the creation of 'Yoda' ?????
Jake Lloyd ?????
The whole podrace to get parts for a spaceship to introduce threepio to link to tatooine plot tangent !!!!!!!!!!
The voices of the battle droids !!!!!!!!!
Midichlorians ??????????????
YOU GET THE IDEA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But then there are the many positive aspects of the film ...... Maul, Qui Gon Jinn, the Duel of the Fates, the battles, the locations ...... !!!!!!

For childhood fans of the Original Trilogy, the years of waiting had possibly led to too much expectation ...... but on the flipside, didn't Lucas owe these fans something much better ????????

As one friend of mine said recently , as long as it's Star Wars I would have been happy with anything !!!!!!!!!

The film isn't a failure but in trying to set up the storyline for Episodes 2 and 3 it often over explains ........ Maul's screen time is criminally reduced when the podrace just goes on and on !!!!! And although Lucas delivers SFX and the movie industry is in his debt ...... is there too much over reliance on CGI ?????

Other "artistic" aspects of the film are worryingly obvious ... the Yoda puppet from 1980's Empire Strikes Back is more lifelike than the Yoda that appears 1999's Episode 1 ... but in Episode 2 the CGI delivers a new improved Yoda ?????

Overall, Episode 1 serves as a vehicle to introduce the key players, the plot, the politics, the locations and the galaxy in which the Old Republic spoken about by Old Ben in 1977 still exist !!!

...... we all knew how the story ends and our frustrations about how the saga actually begins must be balanced by the fact that during Episode 2 and 3 the sense of Star Wars returns !!!!!!!

Episode 1 can't be ignored but in an online poll I ran, and others I have seen ... The Phantom Menace always comes bottom !!!!!!!

and this was the film that countless 30 plus year old's (like myself) had waited years for ..... the teaser trailers, the posters, the hype .... in 1983 (after seeing Return Of The Jedi) I knew that one day Episodes 1,2 and 3 would be made ..... Episode 1 simply failed to live up to the standard of the Original Trilogy
!!!!!

Thankfully , the prequels improved ......

to be honest, i loved this film. i hate how people are always criticising it. it's a good film and everyone knows it!
episode 1 really takes you right to the beggining of the Star Wars saga. you really dont need to have seen any of the other star wars film before this one but for a while you may do as i did in '99 and laugh my head off at yoda and his ears( i was 11).
episode one has great special effects amazing battle scenes and would be loved by any member of the family. well, dont quote me on that. mostly for the males but hey, i loved it!!

This movie hit cinemas in 1999. Fans had waited 16 years for this instalment. Trailers showing the tattooed face of Darth Maul promised much. On initial viewing, however, it didn’t seem to fulfil these promises. The story of how Anakin Skywalker came to the attention of the Jedi and the trade embargo of Naboo which is the first step in Darth Sidious’ plan to control the galaxy can seem a bit slow at times. The introduction of Jar Jar Binks, probably the most irritating character in the movies, didn’t help. The saving grace came with the fabulous light sabre battle between Maul, and Jedis Qui-Gon Jinn and his padawan learner, Obi-Wan Kenobi. It took a fortune at the box office, and left fans hoping for more, hoping for better.

Now the new trilogy is completed, it is worth viewing the movie again. Watching it with hindsight helps improve the experience, watching the manoeuvrings of the evil Sith Lord Palpatine, the initial steps of young Anakin unknowingly on the path to the dark side, and the fears of Obi-Wan for the boys future. If only the Empire had got to Jar-Jar earlier..

I bought this DVD as I had the original film on video and bit by bit I was replacing my videos with DVD's, No matter how hard I tried I could not find the DVD in the shops to complete my collection, I finally found a copy HERE ON Ebay that was in excellant condition,

So my advice is before trailing the shops avoid the hustle and bustle and find what your looking for on ebay !!!!

one of the best films i have ever bought special effects were top long time in waiting for this film wish he could of done all nine episodes of the book in stead of doing six a must buy to add to the rest of your films credit to the creator for the film

I did not like the fact that I received a pirated copy that only played the extra's to the movie and not the movie itself. Also pay pal offered to pay £2.00 as settlement of the £10+ I paid for the movie.(I was the person who doen the investigating and found out that others were not happy, so limiting more damage to ebay in bad publicity)I have emailed them on why they bothered! No response yet if this goes towards the 3 cases I can only claim if things go wrong then I am dissappointed with this out come. You can forward the above on if you like, but I am sorry I can not comment on the film. This was also a present for my son, which needless to say he is not happy about either. Yours Clive Cheasley.

Although this was slated by some fans...it was never going to be as good as the original movies...we watched them when we were yonger and they were truely ground breaking. Nevertheless, it is a great sci-fi fantasy adventure. Star wars is for kids. Lucas produces movies that kids can get into. If you didn't like the originals you'll hate these, but I did and this complicated yet colourful story sets up the rest of the series pretty well. JaJa Binks is a little annoying though.

top class si-fic a must for all star wars fans, kids will love this film if they have star wars lego they can make believe with their lego after the film has finished.

There is nothing I don't like about the Star Wars Plot, it is a very well thought out film, often is the case some people don't like the prequel but I beg to differ . I think they have managed to capture the experiences of the characters and their changes throughout the time. Good film Liam Neeson I find is a very good actor and is flawless in all of his performances.

I bought this because I managed to borrow episodes 2 & 3. This is a good start to the trilogy, but characters like jar jar binks spoil the film by bringing the humour down to a very childish manner.
The action, story line and special effects are fantastic though, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this, and and the other 5 movies, as I have never really sat down and watched the new ones, and haven't seen the old ones for years.

Star Wars are the greatest set of films ever made. If you have a child and they have not watched Star Wars the they should be taken into care.

i got the film for my son as he is realy into star wars at the moment and we have got the rest of them for him as well, you can watch the films over and over and i still like them.
