This excellent Stan Getz compilation brings together two live recordings that present the influential saxophonist at the peak of his powers. The first was recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1961 and features Roy Haynes on drums, Scott Lafaro on bass, and Steve Kuhn on piano. The second was recorded at a concert in Berlin in 1966 and features Haynes on drums, Chuck Israel on bass, and Gary Burton on vibraphone.Getz's classic sax sound, the definition of cool, is front and center here, and there's an easy, accomplished interplay between the musicians. There are elements of straight bop, minimal understatement, and the bossa nova feel Getz was well known for at the time, but all of these styles coalesce into one gorgeous sound on these two outstanding live sessions.
