Where do you begin with a film like Spinal Tap? Basically a spoof rockumentary of a made up English rock group that are in it's fading years having a last gasp tour around America, you get out of the movie exactly what you put in. Sure there is obvious humour, mostly at the expense of the slightly dim witted lead guitarist Nigel Tufnell (expertly played by the comic genius that is Christopher Guest) and you can just sit back and be entertained. But the real rich humour is in the cleverly observed characters and their interaction with each other throughout the film. Enjoying the dialogue between the various group members as they sit being interviewed outside Nigels castle, or improvise an a capella tribute at Elvis's graveside to discussing the debacle that ensued after they performed one of thier former classic stage shows 'stonehenge' they always deliver. All the lead players, from Nigel himself through to David Saint Hubbins (played by the dry blank faced Tim McKean) and the doe eyed deadpan bass guitarist Derek Smalls (played by Harry Shearer now one of the voices behind The Simpsons) are all brilliantly played out. So step this way for exploding drummers, recording in dubly and going up to eleven This is a genuine laugh out loud movie. The smartest parody of every excessive big haired rock group of the mid eighties that is out there. And getting the special edition DVD is actually incredibly worthy as the second disk contains a whole extra films worth of out-takes and extra scenes. It's like watching Spinal Tap in an alternate universe.

i bought the film because i remember watching it years ago and it made me laugh. i particularly like the round shape and the round hole in the middle is a bonus too. i didn't actually like the cover. i thought it was bland and unimaginative, unlike the film. the film rocks.

  Smell The Glove....
Review created: 26/01/07(updated 26/01/07)

This comedy directed by Rob Reiner, is brilliant. The film is a mock rockumentary that satirizes the wild personal behavior and musical pretensions of bands such as Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Queen, Aerosmith, KISS, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and The Beatles, among many others. This Is Spinal Tap chronicles the group's waning popularity during a tour of the United States to promote their latest album "Smell the Glove". The sexist, misogynist, and overly-masculinized elements the general public associates with heavy metal music are parodied throughout. Marty DiBergi (Reiner), a director of television commercials, films the tour and interviews the musicians.

Issued in 2000, this double special edition was released with new supplemental material. It has a new audio commentary track with Guest, McKean and Shearer performing in character throughout, commenting on the film entirely in their fictional alter-egos, and often disapproving of how the film presents them; 70 minutes of deleted scenes (some of which were not on the previous DVD); a new short "Catching Up with Marty DiBergi"; a shorter version of "Cheese Rolling"; the "Heavy Metal Memories" promo and six additional TV promos; music videos; segments of Spinal Tap appearing on "The Joe Franklin Show"; and the theatrical trailer. Once you've watched this DVD you wont be able to take any rock band/documentary seriously again.

The dvd is far superior to the video version, from the opening menu to the hours of extras. It will keep you amused for a good few hours due to the lots of bonus material and the in-character commentary. Side splitting fun to watch!!!!

An 80's Rock and Roll Classic
Review created: 23/09/09

Spinal Tap is a mark of our times (or at least those that are old enough to remember the 80's) I remember this coming out and how it made me feel at the time which was predominantly all about big perm and leather pants.

I was as enthralled then with the idea that this was a fictitious band yet they had put the whole thing together as if it were real.

It was funny, boystrous, serious and a real amusing take on 'proper' Rock and Roll lifestyles of the era as it is seen from the comfortable sofas of todays vegetarian/clean living/feng shui/meditation and yoga practicing rock and roll stars.

Some of the quotes from this film will live forever, watch this film and you will see for yourself.....

This Is Spinal Tap (extended version)
Review created: 11/10/08
by:

I watched this the same day I listened to 3 albums by Manowar (the 'real life' Spinal Tap) and it is easy to understand how this film is so often quoted by working musicians around the world - every horrible cliche (musical and behavioural), every absurd situation and every ridiculous pretention associated with the life of an ailing heavy rock group of the late 1970s is depicted with cruel satire in this superb film. Shot in a deliberately realistic documentary format, this version has the added bonus of 38 minutes of additional footage (fully edited and produced to the same standard as the main feature film) on a second disc which is of equal quality so it's bizarre that these scenes were excised from the original film. This does for heavy rock groups what Blazing Saddles did for westerns. It is a seminal work that, like the Monty Python films, has justifiably become an icon of British culture.

  This Is Spinal Tap

Legendary 'Rockumentary' spoof of rock band 'Sinal Tap' on tour. This classic satire shows the very humorous side of touring around the world and trying to stay on top of the music scene.

We follow Spinal Tap from destination to destination, listen to their 'in depth' interviews and see what makes them tick, whether talking about their numerous drummers, amps that go up to 11 or whether it's lead singer's bread that won't fold, or simply watching them try and find the stage.

This film is a classic!

  Great film- Spinal Tap Rocks!
Review created: 24/03/08(updated 24/03/08)

Very funny film about a second rate rock band trying to keep with the times but drifting down into obscurity. Made in "documentary " style and filled with careful observation - the posh manager, the ignorant record company, the band members with egos the size of the stadiums they cannot fill. Slightly retro now but still a classic. Turn it up to 11!!

Superb - if you've never seen it - where have you been?
Review created: 22/03/08

One of the best films ever made, worth buying for the 2nd disc of outakes and extras alone, especially Hell Hole - makes me laugh every time. I've watched Spinal Tap so often but it still cracks me up. If you've never seen it you've never laughed - buy it now.
The sad thing is that they're so much more talented than 99% of real bands........
Worth keeping your eyes open for the Return of Spinal Tap video, live in concert and one louder - also excellent.

I had heard alot about this film, so when i saw it on ebay for the price I got it for I wanted it instantly.
not only is the film great laugh, the extras are even funier, the deleted scenes ar so funny I don't know why they were deleted, even the menu for the DVD is funny.

Flesh tuxedo that no longer quite fits...
Review created: 26/01/08

It's funny; I watched this movie first when I was about 14 years old and I loved it. I still found it great many years later, but the gags I remembered seemed to have either thinned out, or it may be some scientific truth that as one edges towards a mid-life crisis, our ability to find things piss-the-pants funny fades. The latter can't be true though, as I watched Green Wing the other day and nearly shat a kidney laughing.
For me, it is a cult film for a teenage fanbase who want an intellectual step up from the vacuous Bill and Ted. It is a good film for an older audience too, it just didn't feel great anymore. What will always be great thougth is seeing Shrewsbury Town being brought to the masses.

  A Classic Film
Review created: 09/07/07

This is a classic film which once seen make all 'real' rock documentaries hilarious. This added to the brilliant 'spoof' songs such as 'Big Bottoms' and Stone-enge' is a must see.
