Album Notes Original score composed by Danny Elfman. "Hero" (Chad Kroger/Josey Scott) was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Admittedly, one of the main revelations gleaned from the film SPIDER-MAN is the fact that Willem Defoe always DID sort of look like the Green Goblin. Beyond this realization, and whatever additional pleasure may be inherent in the film itself, the attendant soundtrack album is a tour de force through the world of heavy rock/nu-metal/pick-a-name circa 2002. Chad Kroeger kicks things off with a power ballad remiscent of the Staind hit "It's Been Awhile," but from there on most of SPIDER-MAN is filled with raging guitars, pounding drums, and primal-scream-therapy vocals courtesy of Alien Ant Farm, Injected, and many others. The few divergences from the melee include the Stooges-after-rehab sounds of The Strokes and the Hives, the sultry neo-soul of Macy Gray, and a hard-hitting take on the original Spider-Man cartoon theme (the template for which opens the disc) by Aerosmith. When I was younger, I always enjoyed watching the Spiderman cartoons and reading the Spiderman comics, so the movie had alot to live up to, and generally I have to say that I am very pleased. It tells the whole story from the very beginning, showing how Peter Paker became Spiderman, and unlike most typical superhero films, it attempts to go deeper and explain why the character makes the decisions that he does, based on his relationships with his aunt and uncle, and with his friends especially Mary Jane. The film does have some stunning special effect and has a great attention to detail. However I do feel that in a couple of scenes, it is just a bit too obvious that Spiderman is a computer generated effect. Watch the scene with him and Mary Jane gliding together through the air. But don't despair I only noticed this a few times, and generally it is hardly noticable even then. The casting of the characters are sound, and I could not think of anybody better than Kirstin Dunst to play Mary Jane. Saying that - I do feel that her character is portrayed as a bit of a...(cough) after all she is with what? Three guys in the film. So Spiderman is well worth watching, either as a family film or if like me you are just a fan. I have read a couple of reviews commenting that the beginning of the film is a bit slow, but I tend to disagree. The story is necessary for anyone watching the film who - for some reason - isn't entirely familiar with or what Spiderman is, or for somebody who has just forgotten over time.
