The Sony PlayStation 3 will make you pretty darned pleased at what this large but sleekly-designed video game console can do. The bulk of the expense stems from the Blu-Ray DVD capabilities of the console, a format that enables high-definition DVD playback and gives game designers 25GB or more of space for creating more sophisticated games.

Even beyond the drive, the PS3's specs are truly amazing. The 3.2GHz cell processor is the most powerful chip ever found inside a video game console, and the PS3 ships with either a 20GB or a 60GB hard drive, depending on which version you opt for.

The bare bones PS3 lacks the WiFi and media card reader of the full-fledged system, but is otherwise just as powerful. Sony took a page from the Nintendo Wii with their new SixAxis controller: It looks and feels a lot like a DualShock controller, but is motion-sensitive in six directions. It's not as revolutionary as the Wii controller, but the SixAxis does add another element to gaming, such as utilizing the motion sensitivity to control skating in Tony Hawk's Project 8, for example.

The video game console itself is huge--larger than the Xbox 360--but the glossy black box features curves and design touches that just exude coolness. The touch-sensitive buttons give it a decidedly next-generation feel, and the PS3 supports up to seven Bluetooth controllers. Additonally, the system is backwards-compatible and will play all PS one and PS2 right out of the box.

Unlike Microsoft's Xbox Live, Sony's online service is completely free, letting you play head-to-head multiplayer and browse the Web without any add-on software or service upgrades.

The PS3 features 1080p HDMI output, so you'll get the best resolution currently available on your HDTV. Graphically, this will be the console to beat, although launch games don't look that much sharper than those for the Xbox 360. The PS3 doesn't ship with an HDMI cable, adding to the overall expense.

You can't find a stand-along Blu-Ray DVD player for the price of the PS3, so in those terms, it's a bargain. But as far as video game consoles go, the Sony PlayStation 3 is the most expensive--and most powerful--one ever created.

So I ummed and ahhed for some time about buying the PS3. Why?

1. Don't have enough time to play Games (full time teacher and Dad to be)
2. Heard it was very noisy (untrue!)
3. Did I really need it?

I have to say since owning it now for some time, it really is a truly remarkable piece of kit. Why?

1. The Blu Ray is fantastic. - Just make sure you buy the Blu Ray remote as it's difficult to convince your other half you haven't just bought a games console when operating the Blu Ray with a joystick! That's £200 saved on buying a decent Blu Ray player then (stand alone players don't upgrade themselves either unlike the PS3).

2. It has integrated wireless so no wires which is dead easy to set up. Make sure you have your WEP handy

3. There is a full media server inside so you can browse all your photos, music, videos via your router and which ever other computers you have in the house. Very important for justifying it to the wife when the wedding pics come up in all their glory on your flatscreen.

4. Use it as a DVD player and it automatically upscales the DVD to make them look even better.

5. It has a good Internet Browser built in and the BBC are shortly bringing the iPlayer to PS3.

6. It is constantly being updated and improved via tried and tested over the air updates.

7. It looks fantastic. All black and shiny like the monoliths from 2001 a Space Odyssey.

8. Noise? What noise?? A barely audible slight, very distant hum on occasion. The XBox360 Elite sounds like one of those small portable vacuum cleaners and is really annoying in comparison.

9. It offers full 1080p playback via my Panasonic flatscreen and looks incredible as a result.

10. The Play TV add on turns it into a full on Personal Video Recorder with upscaling. That's another £150 saved then.

11. Oh -the games. Fantastic. Little Big Planet is beautiful, FIFA '09 is better than watching Spurs (not really an endorsement to buy I suppose :-)) and who needs Lara when you've got Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

12. If 80GB isn't bug enough then... Google PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade. Undo 6 Philips screws, slide out the old Hard Drive and insert a 320GB Notebook one for £60 from Amazon. Now you can back up everything and all those dodgy 80's Student videos you ripped from VHS to DVD!

13. PlayStation Network is improving and is Free. The new Home is just round the corner... downloadable films etc.. social networking etc..etc..

So buy yourself a PS3 and watch it develop into your all in one entertainment centre!

The long awaited PlayStation 3 is finally available in all stores and prices are steadily decreasing.

I bought the PS3 as an upgrade to my previous consoles (The PS2 and Nintendo Wii). Being a heavy gamer, having the latest and most popular games console is a must.

I didn't buy it just because of it's looks. I bought it because of the wide features on the PS3... it allows me to connect my PSP to it and browse my files. Anyone that has used or owned a PSP will be able to navigate around the GUI with ease. The web browser is really quick and it allows you to connect to the Internet using WIFI or the internal Ethernet connection. It is ready to use out of the box with the ability to choose an alternative language upon first startup. There are regular firmware updates that add features or improve existing features.

Another great feature of the PS3 is that it allows the user to install "Other OS" so you can install various flavors of Linux on it. Making the console more than just a media center.

When I first started using this console with the standard RGB cable. The quality of the pixels looked very grainy. But when I had bought a 1080p HDMI cable and had it connected to my HD LCD TV. The difference was greatly noticeable by the level of colour and the sharpness of the gameplay.

What I like about the PS3 is that the online service is completely free, so you can be up and running straight away and not worry about renewing your subscription every month. I downloaded the Gran Turismo HD and Ninja Gaiden Sigma Demo from the Online Network and when I was done with them I simply removed it from the hard disk. The PS3 has a unique download manager, that allows you to download multiple games from the Sony online network and whilst you are waiting for the download to complete you can still play any other game from disc or already pre-installed on your hard drive, and when the download has completed a small pop up message appears to let you know it has been done so you can go back to the menu and run the game. This means you can still use your PS3 even though it is busy with another task. This is the advantage of the Cell CPU.

The PS3 uses a 2.5" SATA Hard Disk and it is easily removable, meaning you can change your existing 40GB hard disk and have it fitted with a massive 250GB if you have the extra cash. The maximum the X-Box 360 Elite can handle is 120GB and it is not as easily expandable since it needs to be official X-Box hardware, whereas the PS3 does not. If you install Linux it will only use 10GB of the hard disk.

The PS3, like the XBOX 360 uses wireless controllers and uses the USB port to recharge the controllers. I was surprised by how long the battery lasted on my controller, perhaps because it is new. The rechargeable battery is integrated into the controller, even though it seems so light. Therefore it does not need to be bought separately like the Nintendo Wii and 360.

I honestly believe this console is here to stay for at least another 5-7 years because of what it is capable of. If anything £299 is more than reasonable for what you get for your money. If you have a HDTV, you will be able to use it to it's full potential. If you have a standard TV, it may feel to you like your Playing on a PS2 and you will be limiting your experience.

There is so much more I want to say... But I'll leave it to you to discover them when you have bought it :D.

Th Playstation 3 will most certainly appeal to any hardcore videogamer. For me it was a fantastic investment and i have no regrets. Here is a detailed review:

PRICE - The high price tag of this console may put people off. Believe me when i say that every part of my £260 was worth it. The console offers many more features and accessories than its cheaper rivals, so it is certainly worth the high price tag. Read on to see why this is.

GAMES LIBRARY - This is section that is (really) going to grant you a verdict as to whether the Playstation 3 is worth the investment. It is also the one field where opinion will dominate the verdict. Personally, i am drawn to the games on the playsation 3 much more than i am drawn to games on the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii (the ps3's main rivals). Some games on this console are very specialised - "METAL GEAR SOLID 4" is a playstation 3 exclusive game that was one of the main factors i bought this console. The game is like nothing you have ever seen - unbeatable graphics (for June 2008) and gripping gameplay. If you are a fan of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, then get a PS3 solely because of MGS4 being exclusive to it. However, if you do not like the MGS franchise, then you can discard this game from "the list" of games to play. For new players, it is certainly worth experiencing, and you will need a ps3 to do this. For many, it WAS the sole reason to buy this console.

Other exclusive games to this console are (in my opinion) far superior to exclusives on the Xbox 360. For example, "UNCHARTED: DRAKE'S FORTUNE" is absolutely stunning to look at and offers a compelling story and gameplay about treasure hunting in lost paradises across the globe. Another example, "MOTORSTORM: PACIFIC RIFT" is an offroad racing game set on a tropical island. The game is utterly stunning. Each track is designed perfectly and the gameplay is also very well crafted. Children would love to play this game until the end of the earth. Parents will also gaze at the screen in shock at the realism (my father certainly did). You will not find Motorstorm on any other console, so if you would like to play it, then buy a playstation 3.

There is also a much larger games library of multiplatform games that are equally compelling to play and justifying of the high price tag on the console. To give a few examples: "BIOSHOCK" is a stunning shooter game with a very spooky story and excellent game design. "FALLOUT 3" is quite cheap to buy these days, yet offers over 40 hours of gameplay in the main story mode. It is an open world role playing game set in a post nuclear wasteland that is a MUST play. "DEAD SPACE" is another mature shooting game that is VERY scary and will chill any player to the bone. Finally, "FARCRY 2" is another open world shooting game set in the African Savanna. All 4 of these games are compelling shooters that a hardcore gamer MUST experience. If you want to play these games, then you might want to consider buying a playstation 3. But remember, they are also available on the Xbox 360.

CONTROLLER - the playstation 3 controller is 100% wireless and has a rechargeable internal battery that last for a good 20 hours at a time. Recharging it couldnt be simpler: just plug it into the console. The controller also has vibration inside it and a very snazzy motion sensor that detects hand movement and is used in many games. It also has a perfect shape to fit in you hands and is one area of design that sony got perfect.

i would never buy from them again very bad service when we open the box the following items were missing a usb cable & the controler when i ask them to explain i was told that all boxxes are opened & inspected by them then thay denied that thay said but i kept there email addmiting this had to buy from argos a control 39.99 & usb cable from ebay 2.00so not a cheep play station 3 was it i will contact paypaql & my credit card company to see if thay can help me get a 42.00 pound refund as this company have refused to help i have bought & sold on ebay for over 5 years & never had reason to complain

I cannot really write a review about this item , as I bought it for my Grandson, who has wanted one for quite some time now, but was unable to buy one because of the cost, So I bought him this one as a Christams present, and hope that he is pleased with it. I have not tried it, as I would not know where to start, so cannot write about that, I am hoping that my Grandson will be able to use it properly. I have replaced the controller that was missing from the box, so he should be able to do whatever he pleases with it now. Hopefully it will last him a long time, and give him lots of pleasure.Sorry I cannot be more helpful

Great graphices, ease of use, no age barriers, excellent escapism entertainment.The games can be expensive initially, but later bargains emerge and then they ae within reach of all players.

The PS3 is by far the best. It comes fully loaded and ready to go unlike the xbox or wii. It plays both blueray (High Definition) and dvd movies (a Blueray player alone is a few hundred quid), music and has full internet, it is wireless broadband, wireless gaming, also can stream data from external sources. You can store movies, music, games, photo's and home videos ( with the eyetoy you can also make your own home videos and even edit and add special effects). Download demos or full games straight from the Playstation Network. Multiplayer gaming online with no monthly or annual charge unlike the xbox, and all of this for one price in one console. Unlike the xbox PS3 games are blueray discs which contain up to 50 times more info than a standard dvd which means the games contain more detail and allows for so much more in the future. Graphics are so far beyond that of the wii that it is not in the same league, so much so that PS3 owners do not even consider the wii and to a certain extent the xbox as true next Gen consoles. Although it is slightly more expensive to buy initially, for the other consoles to add to there basic package leaves them more expensive, not only that they still do not come up to the same level of spec and they also need to have there extras pluged in externally which takes up more space. The fact that the PS3 comes with such high spec in one stylish package leaves it not only a bargain but also takes it from being the best stand alone games console to being a complete media center for the family home.

Playstation or X-box? I have never had any over heating problems with my console; and neither have any of my friends. With the x-box one of my friends had the dreaded circle of death just after warranty expiry!. Some people say that x-box live is better than playstation online; I strongly disagree. I believe after the latest upgrades to the playstation network they have now been made equal. I have never had the connection issues some people speak of with the PS3. The main issue for me now is the fact X-box still charge a fee?. Both consoles have equal graphics and processor speeds, however the PS3 has a built in blu-ray player, which is expensive to buy separately, therefore meaning the playstation can produce in game footage to the highest standards available, higher than the x-box?. Because I am used to the PS controller from old I like the setup and always find it a little strange when I play my mates x-box which in some respects is more ergonomically designed so there are more buttons available, and yet still not awkward to handle. I have both consoles and for me the PS3 wins it by a narrow margin due to the blu-ray player.The PS3 80GB is an excellent, solid gaming console, mine has hours of battering with no issues and I love watching blu-ray disks. Hope this review helps with any decisions.

A great looking console, excellently designed. Bought specifically for its Blue Ray capabilities, which are evident in its excellent picture quality and its ability to automatically set the 24 frames per second feaure when watching DVD's which support this feature. A very quiet console when compared to its rival XBOX 360, unfortunately not as many quality games as its rival. Online multi player feature can be a bit "hit or miss" not having the same support and revenue as XBOX Live. When playing games, graphically there is nothing between the two consoles, they are both great.
