The most significant stumbling block is the price. No matter how you look at it £425 for a games console is a lot of money, and once you’ve added on the cost of a couple of games, a second controller, a Blu-ray remote and an HDMI cable, you’re looking at close to £600!

it’s a shame it's so MUCH,, because the PlayStation 3 really is an impressive piece of kit. This really is so much more than just a games console, and it really could be that digital entertainment hub that Sony would have you believe it is. And it really does have the potential to be a truly great gaming platform. As things stand though, Sony has managed to make the PlayStation 3 look like the least attractive next generation console, when it really shouldn’t be.

A great all round system - the best of the 3. I actually got the 40gb version and I would recommend this, 20gb may be a little limiting after a while.

As a former 360 owner I find this system an improvement and much more interactive - Blu-Ray is a great editon if you have a HD setup.

I also have a wii - but that doesn't compete with this in the same way. Wii's are fun, great for having people round but for serious gaming and more sophiscated games buy a PlayStation 3, it's only going to get better.

The long awaited PlayStation 3 is finally available in all stores and prices are steadily decreasing.

I bought the PS3 as an upgrade to my previous consoles (The PS2 and Nintendo Wii). Being a heavy gamer, having the latest and most popular games console is a must.

I didn't buy it just because of it's looks. I bought it because of the wide features on the PS3... it allows me to connect my PSP to it and browse my files. Anyone that has used or owned a PSP will be able to navigate around the GUI with ease. The web browser is really quick and it allows you to connect to the Internet using WIFI or the internal Ethernet connection. It is ready to use out of the box with the ability to choose an alternative language upon first startup. There are regular firmware updates that add features or improve existing features.

Another great feature of the PS3 is that it allows the user to install "Other OS" so you can install various flavors of Linux on it. Making the console more than just a media center.

When I first started using this console with the standard RGB cable. The quality of the pixels looked very grainy. But when I had bought a 1080p HDMI cable and had it connected to my HD LCD TV. The difference was greatly noticeable by the level of colour and the sharpness of the gameplay.

What I like about the PS3 is that the online service is completely free, so you can be up and running straight away and not worry about renewing your subscription every month. I downloaded the Gran Turismo HD and Ninja Gaiden Sigma Demo from the Online Network and when I was done with them I simply removed it from the hard disk. The PS3 has a unique download manager, that allows you to download multiple games from the Sony online network and whilst you are waiting for the download to complete you can still play any other game from disc or already pre-installed on your hard drive, and when the download has completed a small pop up message appears to let you know it has been done so you can go back to the menu and run the game. This means you can still use your PS3 even though it is busy with another task. This is the advantage of the Cell CPU.

The PS3 uses a 2.5" SATA Hard Disk and it is easily removable, meaning you can change your existing 20GB hard disk and have it fitted with a massive 250GB if you have the extra cash. The maximum the X-Box 360 Elite can handle is 120GB and it is not as easily expandable since it needs to be official X-Box hardware, whereas the PS3 does not. If you install Linux it will only use 10GB of the hard disk.

The PS3, like the XBOX 360 uses wireless controllers and uses the USB port to recharge the controllers. I was surprised by how long the battery lasted on my controller, perhaps because it is new. The rechargeable battery is integrated into the controller, even though it seems so light. Therefore it does not need to be bought separately like the Nintendo Wii and 360.

I honestly believe this console is here to stay for at least another 5-7 years because of what it is capable of. If anything £299 is more than reasonable for what you get for your money. If you have a HDTV, you will be able to use it to it's full potential. If you have a standard TV, it may feel to you like your Playing on a PS2 and you will be limiting your experience.

There is so much more I want to say... But I'll leave it to you to discover them when you have bought it :D.

most games on ps3 are available on xbox 360.

although the ps3 has a slightly better processor, the 360 has a far superiour graphics card. making the 360 better graphically, just slightly slower to load games.

ps3 is NOT REGION FREE - try a pal game in a jap/american ps3, it wont work without a HDMI compatable tv and a HDMI cable!

This is a great item for anyone looking at the latest series of console (playstation 3, xbox 360, nintendo wii) i have played the 360 and i think that the playstation 3 is more advanced. The graphic's are at times amazing and every game i have played has impressed me graphically. The gameplay is also smooth and very responsive and with the wireless SIXAXIS pad is a joy and has surprising good battery. Though only 20gb it still holds alot of game saves and havent run out of space. The online and playstation store capabilities are very good and recommended. Thhe only downsides to this console is 1. At present there are a lack of games available as many major titiles are still to be devolped and 2. thought the console is region free (non-technical terms means:can play games from any country) some publishers put locks on games from different countries making some games unable to run, however this is a rareity. The prices are a bit steep for a console but you do get alot of quality for what your paying for and though the playstation 3 couldnt possibly live up to the hype it gets it still is in my opinion value for money. In conclusion, the playstation 3 console is a great entertainment system and comes equip with amazing gameplay, graphic and overall feel to games and is recommended to anyone buying a new console, it is slightly let down by its lack of games at the moment but by christmas nearly all famous titles will be avaliable and the overall experience will only be enhanced, as i buyer i would suggest that if you are someone looking to save money and are only intresed in selected games i would wait a little while untill the prices drop and more games become available but if you cant wait that long there will be no shame in buying it RIGHT NOW as it is a excellent console and still has some great titles right now.

Over priced with really poor graphics quality and a terrible games selection compared to the Xbox 360. Dont waste your money - Get an Xbox 360

The PS3 is expensive, very expensive.

Well what do you get for your money? Well you get a very powerful CPU. That unfortunately is a bitch to program, and is crippled by a graphics chipset that is significantly inferior to the Xbox 360 (e.g. a THIRD of the triangle setup rate, slower memory access and generally inferior performance) It is also lacking a hardware scaler unlike the Xbox 360 which includes one. This means that games on the PS3 are all DOWNSCALED to 480P unless you happen to be one of the few with a 1080p capable screen!

What else? Well it does include a wireless adaptor (an optional extra for the Xbox 360) and it includes a Betamax V2 Blu Ray drive. Unfortunately this is a non standard HD format that breaks away from the long established DVD forum standard and has many disadvantages compared to the (optional) HD DVD player for the Xbox 360. For starter Bluray movies only come on 25GB disks, whereas HD DVD movies come on 30 GB disks. Secondly HD DVD movies use the vastly superior VC1 codec from Microsoft, whereas Blu Ray movies use the old and inferior MPEG2 encoding standard. Next HD DVD makes it mandatory to include features like Dolby Digtal HD support - which are optional on BluRay. Next HD DVD has a much more powerful and complete 'in movie' functionality based on Windows CE, whereas Blu Ray has a massively inferior and still unfinished solution based on flakey Java software. Not to mention that the general picture quality of HD DVD has been widely found to be vastly superior to Blu Ray. Also HD DVD disks have a larger capacity of 51GB for the latest 3 layer disks compared to only 50GB for Blu Ray.

You also get an HDMI output on the PS3. Is this important? Well no it isnt unless you happen to have one of the VERY few amplifiers that can process Dolby Digital HD soundtracks. The component video and VGA outputs on the Xbox 360 can happily output in 1080p. The new black Xbox 360 launches in May with a 120 GB Harddisk and an HDMI output connection to resolve any concerns about this.

The 10 or so games available for the PS3 are noticeably inferior to the 170 available for the Xbox 360 and the graphics quality far lower. Also the Xbox 360 has far more exclusive content and releases heading its way than the PS3. Games on the PS3 are noticeably flickery with lower resolution graphics, poor detail and jerky movement when compared to the Xbox 360. Ridge Racer on both platforms is a good example of this.

The PS3 also has worryingly low sales and is apparently starting down the console 'spiral of death' where no one buys the console because it has no games, and no one writes games for the console because no one buys it!

Online support on the PS3 is a poor joke. The 'GayStation Network' just sucks big time when compared to Xbox live. As they say, you get what you pay for...

Overall opinion - dont waste your money. If you want the best and most powerful console, pick up the new 120GB Xbox 360 with HDMI when it launches in May. The Xbox 360 has everything in its favour: the best graphics, the best games, the most exclusive releases, the best HD movie solution, its the cheapest, It looks much nicer, it has the best online integration, and it has nearly 11 million units sold whereas the PS3 has only sold approx. 1 million consoles.

Bottom line - Buy an Xbox 360 for the best next generation console experience.
