Mini disc is fine, no real PC compatability

I have enjoyed mini disc for years and wanted to have a mini disc drive installed onto my PC. I am told they are unavailable ? So, I read up and bought a second hand portable mini disc player which has USB and is 'compatible with my PC'. However, its not 'drop and drag' and not a 'plug and play' device. One has to use the clumsy Sony interface which makes the whole thing intollerably slow. I tried to get the hang of it. I perservered for a whol;e week and it beat me.
If you want to buy this as a mini disc player its probably fine. Dont buy it as a means to communicate with your PC.

  Well worth the money!

I bought this Walkman rather than an MP3 player as I appreciate the better sound quality, and its ability to record from other sources (TV, DVD, radio etc.) as well as through a microphone. It replaces my Sony MZ-R70 (that I sold today), which has proved to be very useful for these functions in the past.

The MZ-N710's technology goes a few steps further from the 'normal' MiniDisc recorder; using the latest version of SonicStage, I was able to put 4 hours worth of MP3s onto a 74min disc in about 10 mins - a marked improvement from having to do it in 'real time'. It also makes use of 'LP2' and 'LP4', which allows you to put 160mins and 320mins of music, respectively, onto an 80min disc.

The Walkman (like most Sony products) feels well made, aided by its metal top. The optical line-in records from CDs, DAB and FM radio with amazing clarity, with seemingly no loss of quality. The LED remote looks very cool and works well, and the battery life is phenomenal.

I bought this for a little under £30, though have seen them go for around £45. Obviously this is far far cheaper than their 'new' price (about 4 years ago), and for those contemplating buying, you will not regret it, it's well worth the money.

I bought this to record some Scottish Country Dance Music at live events. The sound quality exceeds every MP3, Ipod etc. It just remembers me when I had a professional German UHER taperecorder 45 years ago. You record in full Hifi quality. I still have not entirely understand the recording technique, but I think it is similar to the rewrite CD's. Maximum playing, recording time is 80 min. You need special mini-discs which are plenty available.
What I do not like so much: You really have to go into the structure of the menu on a tiny LCD screen. Do not buy any Walkman without it's manual, although you may download it from Sony, as well as the excellent PC interface software.
You also should invest in a high quality microphone. I bought a Sony stereo mic that Sony recommends in the manual. It cost me twice the price of the Walkman and it is used! You can pay up to 100£ for a mic from Sony.
The built-in battery is a rare format. Look at Ebay for an offer were you can get a special charger which comes with 2 batteries. They are not cheap. But always use the attachable battery holder which uses a normal AA battery.
My review is not comprehensive as I only have this Walkman for several weeks. The next project I would like to start is recording bird songs in our near forest. But perhaps I would need a special uni-directional mic, another expensive accessory. I have a look at Ebay...

I got this in order to have a very portable but high quality outside recording setup. Its very cute. Its small, well made, with a good battery life, and great quality sound on playback. Even with a microphone the equipment fits in one hand!

I need to get a minidisc deck as well though as the only way to output from this unit is via the headphones - with a deck I hope to be able to capture a digital version of the recordings straight onto my PC via optical cable. So not quite as cheap as I hoped for the complete setup, but the quality of MD is superb.

The MZ-N710 I bought was well used but still in very good shape.

My new car came with an ipod connection so i bought an ipod. No longer do i find i use my far better quality minidisc player but wish i did.

The sound quaility on the minidisc is brilliant and the sonic stage software is easy to use and edit track titles etc. The long play versions are worth going for so to fit much more on each disc

  MP3 Player

My Grandson "accidently" damaged my MP3 player which I had lent him temporarily. In my wisdom I decided to by him a replacement. The product was in as good condition as my original and my grandson is quite happy. He, of course, denied all knowledge of the damage. Still, what are grandads for??

Sony Net MD Walkman - didn't work on battery !!

I wanted this to rehears with my band. To try it out i plugged it in and it seemed to work fine so i gave good feedback. It was only afterwards i realised it didn't work on battery. I emailed the sellers but obviously because they already had their feedback they didn't respond. Bought another battery and still doesn't work ie there is a problem sellers should have disclosed but didn't. Shame on them!!

Rotten MD Walkman MZ-N710 Personal MiniDisc Player

Hello,

Almost the month ago I bought the mini dics, and to before yesterday it worked good, but unfortunately it turned out that a main head in it is broken and now my minidisc is rotten. I know that it was a used equipment but the seller assured that it was in the excellent condition. At the beginning I was satisfied but now I am not.

  a journalist dream come true
Review created: 07/01/08
by:

I have searched everywhere for a mini disc player, to enable my journalist daughter to record interviews. I had no success. Then someone suggested Ebay. I was delighted with this seller, from the moment my bid won to the time our parcel arrived. I emailed the seller to tell them their money was on its way. They emailed me when the cheque arrived and the goods arrived in perfect condition. I would buy from this person again with complete confidence.
The mini disc player was so easy to use and it beat the socks off an ordinary dictaphone. It is lightweight and discreet. It has a small unobtrusive mike and the headphones allow interviews to be edited at once. The mini disc is now the preferred choice at a lot of radio stations and the discs are lightweight and therefore they are cheaper to post.
This mini disc player is a very stylish metallic blue. It was a great find.
