Sony Ericsson W960i as a practical tool

If you're considering upgrading, but don't want something you are going to have to learn from the ground up, have a look at this phone. It's practical, has a large 8 GB internal memory plus internal memory of 500 MB and contains a wealth of features mainly absent from other similar phones, such as an Office reader suite. Everything is intuitive and you can customise many of the phone operations as you wish.
Using the phone as a business tool you can set up as many email accounts as you want, or use the Blackberry simulation package.
Programs like Google Earth are also downloadable, this works by triangulating your phone signal rather than by GPS. Works well enough but it's no SatNav though.
With 3g and wireless capability (easy to set up) you won't be stuck for a good internet connection and the large screen provides plenty of real estate to look at.
Photography is fairly good with a decent 3.2MP and LED flash/light as well. Video is acceptable but there are other camera phones which will probably do better. This phone has front and back facing cameras for video calls - whenever this becomes fashionable or practical.
Loading music and films is a breeze thanks to the high speed connection built in.
The walkman feature is simply some software to make the playing of music a more pleasant affair. Nothing special at all, but it's there and it's free so why not use it. You get a set of three dedicated "play" keys on the main screen.
The major difference between this phone and the one I upgraded from, the P1i, is the lack of QWERTY key layout on the keypad. All you get is the standard phone keypad, which is not as good. SE fans will know of the screen based virtual keyboard - which is still available on the W960i - but will miss the availability of the real thing on the keypad.
Size and shape - it's pretty similar to the P1i and weighs around the same at around 110g. The corners are nicely rounded and the feel is that of a smooth little slab. Nice to hold and the side mounted keys for camera, volume and scroll key are all just right. Power on/off is right on the top and slightly recessed.
All in all a decent phone with a lot of features, usually at a decent price on ebay.
Problem area - if you happen to have a broken screen the repair is not straightforward and involves a reasonable amount of time and knowledge. Parts are, however, easy to come by and relatively cheap.
