  Oh what a corker!

They reckon that for like for like, digital has to pass 13 mp to equal the quality of 35mm - Well, sony are getting close - and at an affordable price as well. It's truly a compact camera, almost just a HUGE lcd screen with a lens attached to it - it stowes away nicely and is ready for action quickly.

After selling up 35mm SLR's to go digital in 2000 - 2001 and the onset of a new child about to arrive we decided it was time to update from our 4.1mp Nikon. Already a fan of Sony and Carl Zeiss from my Photography retail days it didn't take long to whittle the choices down to a couple. Another factor that really did swing it for us was that we already had quite alot of media for it from old sony-ericsson mobile phones.

Controls are easy to use - perhaps not so ergonomical as with some cameras but they work and with all things, you adapt.

Screen is big and clear, easy enough to use in bright light. Fabulous for reviewing your handy work. Lets face it Sony are world leaders in TV's so this is obviously going to follow suit.

Picture quality is amazing! Huge sized images approx 3 - 4 mb nice to work on with adobe and sharp as a pin printed out on 6x4 or other traditoinal sizes.
Video playback is top quality too.

Battery life is impressive and charges up in a few hours.

Buy as much media as you can cause you will fill the cards up very quickly especially if you're using video settings.

I'd like more zoom but the 3 x is pretty standard so you're not missing out.
Extra batteries are £30 each approx. Expensive but worth while.

Why can't we get the case thrown in as I hate ill fitting after sales accessories- still this has been an issue since I can remember.

If you're in the market, this will please you for sure!

This camera is in TOP 3 of 2007

Sony does it again. Mega Pixel overkill for sure. But It is matched by a brilliant lense and some clever SONY IMAGE stabilization and jiggerypokery that gets the best out of your snaps. If your a more seasoned snapper, It has manual and program modes, and the ISO levels are really good.

As Far as BANG PER BUCK, this camera so far (nearly the 9/2007) is unbeaten. Point and shooters should buy, 4GB memorystick highly recommended. Its stylish, and well made.

good job SONY!!!

this camera is absolute quality and value for money. I have always been a camera person, not particulally professional in any way but love taking pictures. Well this camera is all I'll ever need. It looks fantastic, takes great clear pictures and has loads of features to make your shots even better. So many I haven't even got to use them all yet! I would recommend this camera to anyone. I know someone who paid alot more for the older model of this so just proves that it was worth waiting for!

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W200 Digital Camera
Review created: 03/03/08

This is a really super little camera. It has an excellent macro facility, and the results of all shots are crisp, and with excellent resolution. The only negative thing that I have found, is that in photographs of buildings, they tend to lean a lot, but I would expect this with a pocket sized camera. An essential piece of equipment for travel. The underwater casing for this camera - which I do not have - is very reasonably priced, and would be a great thing to have if you went diving. The battery takes a while to charge up, so I would advise investing in a spare if you take a lot of photographs. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Great Camera One of the best i have used so far!!!!!!!!
Review created: 04/11/07
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I had had a Sony Cybershot 3.1 mpx for some years which had given fine performance but I wanted an upgrage. Wanting to future proof myself for a few years a 12.1 mpx seemed a bit cutting edge and over the top but what the heck!

I read the few reviews I could find and looked at the info about the camera on the Sony site and Amazons site and decided this camera seemed perfect for my needs.

I wanted it as a family camera, holidays and stuff - but beware.....many digital cameras now do not have an eye-piece view finder they only rely on the LCD screen only.....this sony camera still has a viewfinder you can look through. This is a massive bonus when you are trying to take pictures in very bright sun in bright hot holiday locations, think about it.....you just cannot see the pre-view shot ont the LCD screen in bright sun - the viewfinder allows you to perfectly frame your shot even in places like Egypt where refections from sea/sand etc make it impossible to view the screen. My wife also prefers to use the eyepiece because she cannot always see the picture in the LCD scree so again a bonus.

The camera is very slim, you can slip it in your pocket or bag no problem, the screen is massive and crystal clear - its just brilliant. The 12.1 mpx setting means you can blow your pictures up to A3 size and have them crystal clear but after trying out the setting for a few weeks you will want to adjust back to something more normal - I am using the 5 mpx setting for general holiday shots. Remember the memory used per shot is now megabytes. The camera has its own memory but you will need to buy a memory stick on top. A 4 gig memory stick duo pro these days costs circa £20 so really cheap. Get a couple.

With high memory such as above you dont have to worry about using the video part of the camera, you can shoot hundreds of photos too and just delete any poor ones.

The camera is festooned with built in bits and bobs. You can go to manual settings as well if you want. One thing that's great is the macro settings. I took some close up shots of flowers in the garden using the macro setttings - with the camera built in slide show and music generation you can then link to your TV and play back straight away a professional movie where each photo fades into the next via your selected choices. With the software provided you can edit on your PC or just transfer the images easily or burn to CD/DVD etc. You can even playback your slide show on the camera screen immediately and show your family/friends. You can also add your own music etc via the software provided.

There are all sorts of different modes eg landscape, night, snow etc and all just a rotation of a small dial away. You can even select a rapid take feature where suppose you are taking a pic of your boy playing football, select rapid shot, click - and the camera will take a pic every second or so. In a minute you can have a whole stream of pics and just select the best/clear ones. Greaat for rapid action capture.

I really have enjoyed this camera so far, although I have only had it a few weeks it is packed with goodies and OK a lot you will seldom use but there is loads that will add benefit to your photo taking experience. You can make it as complicated or as easy as you like.

Last few wor

The camera is very easy to use. However the flash is so slow that you think the shot has being taken, you move and then the picture is a bit blury. When you get use to the camera you become aware of this and it becomes easier to take a good shot. The quality of the pictures is absolutely amazing.

I decided to buy this camera because it fits nicely in your hand and comes with 12.1 mega pixels. The quality of the pictures are superb and the auto focus is almost immediate. I have only used it twice but I have fallen in love with it already. So far I cannot fault it in any way.

  12.1 Megapixels?
Review created: 24/05/08

Somewhat disappointing. I don't see much difference between the pictures taken using this camera and those from my old 8MP. One should really be an adept on making the proper settings (refer to the manual over and over, it has all the secrets) as laziness to set it properly each time could very well result to poor or even blurred photograps. If you're not so tech savvy I would advise that you do away with this model, but if you're someone who enjoys didling with things then it may serve you well. Prepare to spend a lot more than the price of the camera, upon buying you will discover loads of accessories (some I even consider necessities) that are available for this model, which you will, almost certainly, be tempted to order.

  Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-W200 Digital Camera
Review created: 07/05/08

first of all, a very tactile camera packed full of function. The battery and memory stick are easy to access, as is getting to grips with the menu functions. the multi function wheel is easy to use for choice of shooting mode as is the on screen display menu. The quick start up time is great, allowing you to turn the camera off when waiting for that perfect pic. The pics I have taken so far are only candid with the odd posed one of the kids. I have used it in different situations, such as outdoors in the sun and indoors with low light and the pics have been great. Using the view finder in sunny condition is a bonous but I find the whole package excellent, I have a digital slr which I use more often but when needed the sony pack a powerfull punch 9 out of 10 for me. Discontinued now the new model should be even better, So if you can still find one GET IT!!

  Fantastic Camera Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-W200
Review created: 06/05/08

The best camera i've ever used. T 12 megapixels its very good quality. It has some new technology features on it, for example face detection which is where when your taking a picture it will specifically zoom in on people's faces so that it can make it easier to take pictures of people. There is also some basic editing options and fun features such as fish eye and the star burst option.
The camera is a nice size, and it's quite light too. The screen is a nice size, it's slightly bigger than some older cameras.
It's very easy to use this camera with simple to use menu.
The battery that comes with it is very good & lasts a long time.
Overall it's a very good camera i would definately reccomend it.

Delighted so far with this camera, having had cameras for over 50 years. Was worried about this being so small. It is great and easy to use, especilly having a view finder. Like all with screen, one cannot view in sunlight. Easy to use and looking at photos taken through the computer, this 12 mega is fabulous
