Let me start from the beginning;
I started off with the DSC-U20 when it first came out and loved it, I had gone from a house brick sized digital camera that was sub 1 megapixel and that took an age to take a picture. Then the U20 came along and I saw how small it was, how easily it fit into my pocket so I just had to have one. The shutter speed was so must fast than my old camera I could actual take pictures without it being a pre planned event.
Sadly on holiday in America it's small easy to fit size backfired as I lost. The lack of camera was short lived as I when straight out and purchased the DSC-U30 which was practiacally the same except for a small amount of optical zoom.
However I get back from America and tradgedy struck again! I broke the U30, this was totally my fault so there was no chance of a warranty job. I'd broken a brilliant camera after just 2 weeks. I tried to survive a while without a camera but more and more I missed having a small compact digital camera.
Then one day I saw the U40! Even smaller, faster and now with a half decent video capture resolution, I bought it there and then. This was the best of the lot more refined and smaller with better quality pictures, What more could I ask for. This camera then served me well for a couple year untill! I sold it on eBay.

Ignore peoples comments about bad transactions, these reviews are for the camera not buyers problems!!!! jeez.
Great 6x4 prints from a quality 2MP camera. Too many times people get blinded by the amount of megapixels in a digital camera. Its not the amount of megapixels, its what the camera does with them.
Great flash, geat quality pics, fantastic (probably the best) portability. All round a great little funky camera.

I bought one of these cameras last year & its been excellent, ignore the other idiots review on here as it's not even to do with the product just a bad experience he had with a seller at some point. Not even the seller selling in this particular advert. what an idiot. All round good camera, small packet sized, ideal for nights out holiday snaps etc even though its onlk 2megapixels it will produce much larger & cleaner shots than a mobile phone... Theres no substitute for a stand alone camera.

First the bad: Chromatic spread on the lense (esp. if you have something fine and dark like a branch against e.g. the sky), no-zoom, NiMH batteries don't last very long.
Now the good: Incredibly small, cute, fast start up, very simple to use, standard (full-size) Memorystick and compatible with modern M2 if used in an adapter, better optics than most (all?) camera phones (megapixel count means a lot less than you think -- check out Flickr). This camera is a conversation starter!

The DSC-U30 is now a rather old model now (2003), with only 2M pixel. But it can be bought fairly cheaply on Ebay, is very rugged and small size. It runs with ordinary AAA batteries , so if you forgot your charger you can always find a place to buy these. As price of memory has come down quite a lot, even a cheap 512MB stick will hold hundreds of photos. People are always surprised when I show my photos, 'you took this with your small camera ?' In a sense, this is the camera you may want to take on a trip in a remote location. It's small enough also not to attract attention,it's light, and should it get stolen well you won't have lost too much money.
Colours are very vivid, depth of field is very good also. The only down side is that in low light conditions you need a steady hand. There is no zoom either.
In the end, I bought a second one on Ebay recently, to have a spare one should this one go wrong !

Great little unit: compact and simplicity itself to operate. Rechargeable batteries last for ages. Low megapixel delivers surprisingly sharp images and ensures that even a modest memory stick will store scores of photos.
My only slight gripe is that the lens is VERY wide angle: good for snapshots of friends close up, for example, but forget it for panoramas, landcscapes etc: it all looks soooooooooo far away.

Sony Cyber Shot U30Excellent little camera however with new 5 megapixel camera phones available on the market with relatively good lenses means this camera has become slightly obselote. Would be good for a gift for "first camera" for a children to use. Was the perfect companion for festivals where weight & size worked perfectly. However with no optical or digital zoom, some pictures of bands from afar (the ones I wasn't too bothered about) were less than impressive. The flash is brilliant for night pictures & batteries last an age. Overall a good camera with good quality photos however consider an upgrade to your camera phone. Can be bought on eBay for less than $40.

in my opinion the dsc-u30 is the best out of all the cyber shots as it is very small, takes perfect pictures every time is excepsionally easy to use and it is the cheapest of the cyber shots but is as good as the mosr expensive. i would recomend this camera to all. i have had 2 of them now the first one lasted 5 years and was dropped probarbly 50 times and never broke until it was dropped in the sink. all i can say is i give sony 11 out of 10 for this great little camera
