  KDL32D3000 NEW 32" LCD TV
Review created: 29/07/07

Latest top end sony bravia 32" lcd TV.
Launched in July 2007, replaced the KDL32V2500.
Freeview ready, hd ready with 3 X HDMI socket.
(the older model only had 2 x HDMI)
Also 2 scart sockets, pc input, componant input, and phono audio out.
This 32d3000 is a black model with silver trim on the bottom lip. Priced at about £950 - £1000 at launch. A good tv, great for watching Hi-Def tv on from sky or cable, or for playing Hi-def games consoles like the X-box 360 or playstation 3. Picture is also good using the internal freeview tuner.
Improved contrast ratio of 8000-1. Unlike the previous models, this does not have a swivel base - but as a result the set is about an inch shorter that the older model.
This is sonys top level d-series,with 100hz and motionflow, which is great for sports and fast moving action. you will also find the lower spec s-series, which looks very similar, butwithout 100hz and motionflow.
Overall, it is a very good Sony tv.

  Highly Impressive Pictures

This is the 100hz version of the Sony 32" range. It doesn't take a long time to see the visible differences between this and 50hz versions, even on SD pictures. It gives noticeably clearer better pictures on most sources.
One of the main advantages of this set , over its rivals from Panasonic and the like, is that it is 10 bit instead of 8 bit. This means simply that there are more colours, better gradation and tonal range etc. Where before you saw just black in the shadows, and white in the high lights, now there is detail, tone and shape to everything !
Previously difficult to see games become clear as a bell, the detail and definition from a PS3 via HDMI is superb - at 720p or 1080p. Even PS2 games played this way look better. It gives the best picture I have ever seen from a Wii ( via component at 480P), though, as not HD, the PS3 blows it away for picture quality.
(SD)DVDs look great, no motion judder, and the built in Freeview tuner gives excellent pictures on a good signal - the tuner is that good that we can receive some channels even when we are not supposed to be able to get Digital Terrestrial in our Postcode area.
Analogue terrestrial is OK, not brilliant though.
Even SKY via a SKYPLUS box (not seen SKY HD) using RGB is superb if the channel is a good quality one. If it is a low bandwidth channel, then it doesn't look good, but there again, nothing will make a good picture out of a bad one.

There are enough menu items to customise the settings to suit most people and situations. the energy saving backlight is great, and enough inputs and picture formats to future proof for quite some time, whilst still being compatible with existing equipment.
Do not worry too much about the screen resolution of 1366x768. HD Pictures still look amazing, and SD ( 720x576) needs less upconversion to get to 1366x768 than they do to get to the "full HD" resolution of 1920x1080. Upconversion(Scaling) will always be a quality problem with Domestic TVs, because of Cost (A High Quality Upconverter on its own costs £10,000).

The Only downsides to me are:
The sound is OK, but nothing special. Perfectly acceptable for watching TV and Games etc, but for a real Movie Fan I would say that an external sound system would be a lot better.
Sony`s "Smart" Aspect ratio control is not ideal. when it receives a 4x3 image, to make it fill the 16x9 screen, it stretches out the edges only, so that the Middle section remains "correct" i.e. peoples heads are not distorted. However when the person moves to the outside of the screen, then their head becomes larger , so is a most off putting effect. Luckily it can be switched off, so that you can have 4x3 only, or all stretched to 16x9, or 14x9 or even zoom etc. The sooner all programmes are done in 16x9 the better really.

So, In conclusion, I would say that this is probably one of the best, if not the best LCD sets for Gaming and Movie watching/future proofing , if the 32" size and look suits your environment. It isn't silly money anymore, and , to me , anyway, gave much more watchable, impressive pictures, than the Panasonics, JVCs, Philips etc, across the board on all sources.
Bearing in mind the plethora of formats around, and what might be coming up (BluRay/HDDVD battle etc) and the fact that some may be 24p, 50p, 60p,1080i or p
720p etc, and that we still will have for quite a while, 625i/576p, 480p, 525i etc etc, this set will do a great job with near enough every signal you can think of, and more..
