OK I guess you can call me ‘Betamax man’ (though in fact I bought a Phillips 2000 VCR as my first video) and ‘yes’ I admit I bought a Toshiba HD DVD player so it came as no surprise to me when Toshiba announced that HD DVD was ‘dead in the water’. So to the Sony Blu-ray... looks good, though the footprint is large, bigger than the Toshiba and much bigger than a Sky HD box and it seems all these HD players are VERY slow to boot up, press ‘open’, go make a cup of tea. But it is quite (the Samsung is reported to sound like a hovercraft) and I am a great fan of HD and this Sony will not let you down in that department... stunning picture quality though the ‘Up-scaling’ is good, it’s not as good as they would like you to believe. I guess like all these things the price will drop very soon, so if you can hang on till next Christmas, I would go shopping then. Review ID: 10000000006531060 Was this review helpful? As per all the other reviews, the quality of the picture is superb (watch Spiderman back to back with an original DVD if you want to see the full effect!). There is superb connectivity on the rear, with its own 5.1 channel output if you have a surround sound that can accept this (mine did not sadly! - and not a lot do, so beware), as well as optical digital outs, but obviously the easiest, and maybe best connection is via a HDMI lead. The only problem, as every one states, is the load up time. Switch it on, and put the kettle on. Come back in, and press open button. Select the film you want, and get your cup ready. When the tray opens, put the disc in and close. Go back, finish making your drink, sort out your treats, sit down, make yourself comfy.. it really is that long.. and seems longer if you sit there waiting for it! I am not a fan of black electricals like this.. reminds me of the 70/80's! But Sony obviously feels black is the new silver at the mo.. It is not a bad black colour, with a hint of blue shade (to go with the name Blu Ray!) but sadly, it then does not match the shiny black of the current Sony surround systems! They will probably bring out a silver one in a couple of years to make us all change again! Review ID: 10000000008577706 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
