Lock, Stock... but Bigger and Better

Folowing on from the very enjoyable and original low budget Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, this could almost be considered Lock, Stock part II as it reunites most of the cast and crew and it's another gangster movie set in London. However, although the stories are similar there are enough differences and new twists to allow this movie to be considered as a good and original movie in its own right.
Snatch starts with some jocular credits, and the robbery of an Antwerp diamond merchant's office by four thieves disguised as Hasidic Jews. Initially appear in black and white on a succession of CCTV screens, then when they reach their target, they're in colour as they grab the guns concealed on the chest of their leader. Seizing an 86-carat, size of your fist, diamond the robbers head to London to sell the stone and of course this is where the fun starts as all types of cockney and foreign misfits then become involved in the theft and counter-theft and attempted sale of said diamond.

Among the colourful array of characters on parade this time are jewish jewellers (Mike Reid and Dennis Farina), cockney hardman Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones), a truly disgusting underground fight promoter by the unlikely name of Brick Top (Alan Ford), a Russian hitman - Boris the blade (Rade Serbedzija), a fight manager - Turkish (Jason Statham), and Irish traveller Mickey O'Neill (Brad Pitt). Ultimately the surprisingly excellent Brad Pitt steals the movie as the boxing 'yardy' nobody can understand but veteran British actor Alan Ford as the disgusting 'Brick Top' runs him close for best performance kudos.

Like its predecessor Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch is full of twists and turns and plenty of black humour but unlike its predecessor it's a bit more violent and the language is even stronger. It will probably still be unfairly compared to Tarantino but its still a clever and fun movie. My only criticism of Guy Ritchie would be that he needs to learn that less is sometimes more; the movie doesn't need as many twists and it doesn't need so many alternative showy camera angles and film styles. Don't get me wrong, they're good, just a couple too many. This is a four star movie that could have been five.

Pretty much the whole world knows Guy Ritchie's name now. Sadly most people rather insultingly and condescendingly know him as Mr Madonna but just like her first husband cruelly christened Mr Madonna, Sean Penn, Guy Ritchie is a great talent in his own right. However, the acid test of Guy Ritchie's talent will come with his next movie starring 'er indoors (as they say in cockney vernacular), the so far allergic to anything resembling believable acting Madonna. If he can get a decent performance out of Mrs Ritchie he truly will be hailed as a genius.

Highly talented writer/director Guy Ritchie delivers another masterpiece with Snatch, that equals the sheer quality and genius of his other masterpiece, Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrells. Once again the film is edgy with vast undertones of dark, gritty realism centering on the underworld but refreshingly encapsulates a darkly humorous side to it making the film have an even balance and therefore making it more enjoyable and entertaining in the process. The film has a host of subplots all shrewdly linked to the main storyline and a wealth of characters including a couple of likeley Cockney lads who are two novice unlicensed boxing promotors, Turkish (Jason Statham) and Tommy (Stephen Graham), fellow boxing promotor Brick Top (Alan Ford), Mickey O'Neil played by Brad Pitt as an Irish gypsy who gets roped into the boxing match where his opposition is rigged to win, Avi (Dennis Farina) as the man due to deliver a stolen 86 carat diamond and Bullet Tooth Villain (Vinnie Jones) who Avi hires to trace the diamond after he is robbed. The characters and performances are superb and vastly convincing, the host of plots are well-structured and the attutude-laced dialogue rides along like a roller coaster. Snatch on the whole is an utterly compelling film that will grip your attention and not let it go until the film is completed. Essential viewing and the extra features on this DVD are an added bonus. Highly recommended!Fantastic

"Snatch" is a movie that takes a little patience to get into. The first 15-20 minutes are a bit confusing. There are a lot of characters to introduce, and Ritchie's fitful editing style - reminiscent of music video-style flash - is something the viewer will have to get used to. But once it settles down and we get into the flow of it, it is a very entertaining, even hilarious, movie.
Brad Pitt does a superb job and shows once more why he is not only a big star but a fine actor. All the actors in this are excellent. It's a film about confusion, dumb plots, and drastic mistakes made by people who think they're smart when really they are all dumb as lamposts.

This movie is made with real flair and an ear for "talk." I would suggest watching it with ENGLISH SUBTITLES ON. This is the great innovation of DVD and it makes the picture a bit more coherent. There is a section when Pitt delivers one of his prodigious mumbles that the subtitles simply give up. It is actually totally invented by Pitt. Don't worry if you aren't getting it all the first time you see it. It's really a small tour de force by Ritchie and needs to be seen at least twice to get the full effect..

5/5 from me

Guy Ritchie strikes again with another cockney crime caper with a hilariously twisted plot, very much in the same vein as the fantastic Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. The main difference here is that everything is bigger, better and faster; the budget, the stars, the locations, the editing, the endlessly quotable dialogue and the music. The ball starts rolling when Franky Four Fingers (Benico Del Toro) steals a huge priceless diamond from Antwerp and brings it to London on route to New York. Cue murder, betrayl, mayhem, strong language, thievery and a dog that'll eat just about anything. Endlessly watchable and entertaining. The best British film in years. Where else are you going to see Brad Pitt and Frank Butcher in the same feature?
The DVD is a corker too. Boasting many fantastic features including a commentary, deleted scenes, a documentary, interviews, trailers, TV spots, storyboard comparrisons, photo library and some absolutely hilarious hidden features.

  Fantastic classic british gangster film

I was never really too keen on "Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels". All my friends constantly quoted it, raved and ranted, and then when "Snatch" came out, everyone made an even bigger deal of that. I watched Lock Stock, and though I did like it, it didn't really tickle my fancy. But Snatch, that's a completely different story all together.

When I saw Snatch at the cinemas, I was shocked to see a couple leave only fifteen minutes into the film. As they left, you could hear their intellectually deficient comments; "this movie is so boring". I couldn't believe it! I'd recommend this movie to ANYONE, The Pope even!

There are hundreds of thousands of reasons for anyone to see this movie; each word of the script being a reason.

Snatch is possibly one of THE best written movies I've seen. It's smart, witty, funny and has just the right touches of dark humour. With characters like Turkish, Mickey, Tommy, Brick Top, Bullet Tooth Tony and Cousin Avi; their witty repartee will have your personal quotes list full for months after watching it. The camera work and editing complement each other to keep the film's pace on its toes, much like the boxers at the center of the character's stories.

Jason Statham has some of THE best lines in the movie, constantly slamming anything even slightly intelligent his partner Tommy has to say. Brad Pitt turns out an excellent performance as the Irish-Gypsy-Pykie Mickey; his accent is hilarious.

Even though the story line is only a simple one (following a massive Diamond through England's criminal underworld), it is the connections each character has to the diamond and each other that really makes this film stand out from all the usual jewel-heist films.

Another 5 / 5 from me on this one, it's just a pity the follow up to Snatch was a "collaborative effort" from Mr. Richie and his um.......wife.

An excellent British comedy thriller that tells the tale of a boxing promoter on the fringes of gangland who gets involved with a diamond heist. As it says on the cover – A barrel of fun even better than Lock Stock & Barrel. This is the film for you if you like your thrillers with bags of mayhem.
The film is very fast paced without being too frantic and holds the attention from start to finish. A great cast take their roles well and are believable in their characterisation.
All in all a great film and an excellent evenings entertainment.

This is one of my favourite films. I never tire of Brad Pitt's bare knuckle fighter, or Jason Statham's promoter, there are so many hilarious characters, Bricktop, Tyrone, the dag (dog) etc. etc..
A really great night in!

Following on from the success of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is Snatch.
It follows in a similar vein, multi character profiles, which eventually all intertwine. Jason Statham reprises his role (but different character) as a London geezer.. and this film went upmarket slightly by using Brad Pitt in a supporting role. He plays a Traveller (best, most true to life portrayal I have ever seen) who is a champion fighter.
The through running story is about a stolen diamond, that everyone wants to get their hands on.
I still struggle to choose which of these two films I prefer.

Snatch is one of those films where you either love it or hate it and I happen to love it. Its not one of Brad Pitts finest hours but equally the rest of the cast certainly make up for it. It never ceases to amaze me how all the interwoven characters and plots finally meet in the end but yet it all seems so seemless and if its everyday life. You have to love the late, great Mike Reid pretending to be jewish as well as Benico Del Toro as a finger missing gambling addict!!!

This film is one of the best I've seen! Full of quirky bits to have a chuckle at and also contains fast action. Fantastic story line which you can easily keep up with which moves the film on at a steady flow. Guy Richie excells with the directing, and choose the actors well. Interaction between the gangs is brilliant and the unexpected twists enable the cultures with in the film to intergrate.
I found this a very watchable film which has now enhanced my collection.

This is one of the best films I have ever seen. Guy Richie is a genius. Snatch is funny, moving, clever and absolutely brilliant! Fans of Brad Pitt will find his portrayal of the gipsy fighter hilarious - the veiwer can understand every word he says without hearing even one of them - just fabulous! If you liked Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - this is better. Get it!

This film is so funny and is suberbly directed. The fight scenes are realistic and although it does have lots of violence there isn't really any gory imagery. There is very strong langauge but is very witty. The actors are all amazing. It's easily as good as Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Guy Ritchie has excelled himself. A must see.

Review created: 09/10/09

Since "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" was released back in 1998, British cinema has been awash with inferior imitators eager to cash in on its success. Thankfully this is not one of those.

Don't believe the film-makers' hype that "Snatch" is 'completely different' to "Lock, Stock". It isn't. If you like this genre then you will love this film.

The film combines several stories: the heist of a diamond by Frankie Four Fingers (Benicio Del Toro); the attempted retrieval of said sparkler by assorted jewellers, pawnbrokers and thugs (Jones); two illegal boxing promoters and their attempts to salvage a queered deal with local crimelord Brick Top (Ford); and of course One Punch Mickey (Pitt), an incomprehensible gypsy with a mean right hook.

These various strands weave into a whole in a kind of Pulp Fiction format.

There are some great performances. Pitt in particular gives his all as the pikey who may be more than he seems, while "Eastenders"' Mike Reid and Hoolywood hardman Vinnie Jones play their roles for laughs and it just about comes off.

I would urge anyone to give this film the once over just so long as they follow the advice. "Beware any man that keeps pigs for a living."
