I don't remember reading a thing about this movie when it originally appeared, and that's odd because I enjoy Gwyneth Paltrow's work. I caught up with it on DVD, and I thought it was a superior movie with an extremely interesting premise and splendid performances by Paltrow's co-stars. Without giving too much away, the film deals with two separate scenarios that evolve from Paltow's (a) catching or (b) missing a subway train. The director manages skillfully to lay the two stories down alongside one another without confusing either one. Although the two Paltrows are distinguished by different hair styles, even that isn't really necessary. She (becomes) happy in one story, desperately unhappy in the other. She succeeds (eventually) in one story, fails in the other. She is the same character but entirely different. As she proved in "Shakespeare in Love," this girl can act. There aren't many films where chance causes alternate fates that are followed through to a rather surprising end. Worth seeing for that reason alone. Plus Gwyneth Paltrow, of course.

A friend of mine recommended this DVD and I couldn't find it without having to order it, which also proved expensive. I browsed through ebay and was pleased to find one for sale. I wasn't disappointed with the film and it proved how different life can be if we choose a particular path or are a split second late/early. Very poignant.

This is one to watch when you feel like a night in on the sofa but beware! Those of you who are sensitive may find yourself shedding a tear or two! This film may seem a little hard to get into at first. It tells the story of a woman who leads two lifestyles depending on whether she catches a certain train or not. It takes you through both lives and really drags you into the character of Helen played phenomenally well by Gwyneth Paltrow.

You are made to feel sorry for the character as in one life she is being cheated on, but also makes you feel relief for the character, as she meets another eligible male or so it would seem. I won't spoil it! However, a brief rundown for you; Midway through a miserable day, Helen's (Gwyneth Paltrow) life splits two ways. Having seen her just miss a train and subsequently mugged hailing a cab, we watch the action replayed, and this time Helen just squeezes through those doors - ''Sliding Doors''. Due to her stint in casualty (from the mugging. keep concentrating or you'll lose the story), version one remains unaware that her sleezy boyfriend Gerry is having an affair with his ex, Lydia.

Me being a bloke, I had decided that this film was a "chick flick/romcom" and not for me. However, upon hearing a few people describe the film as amazing and being recommended the film I thought I should check it out. Was it a chick flick? Well-yes, but with strong performances and a well developed storyline this was cetainly above the average romantic comedy. The concept of a split second bringing you down a different path in life was interesting.

A great film about a young lady that is not having the best luck in her love life. So true to real life in as much as you often think "What if..." and in the split second - or the sliding of a door, how so much could change.... I love the double endings... just like what if....!

One of my favourites -- Gwyneth at her best -- makes you think about all the "what if" twists and turns in your own life.

Having seen this film at the cinema i spotted it on Ebay whilst buying another film and had to have it.
This is a lovely film which splits this womans life into two all because of her either missing or catching a train. Have you ever wondered what would have happened if i did this? This film tells that story which runs concurrent with the 2nd sceanario of what would have happened if i didn't.....
Good acting and it kept me entertained to the finish.... Worth seeing

  EXCELLENT FILM !
Review created: 13/04/09

A very intelligent film from director Peter Howitt (SOME MIGHT REMEMBER HIM AS JOEY IN THE THE 1980's SIT-COM "BREAD" ... THE ONE WHO DROVE THE JAG). He also wrote the film.

Paltrow and Hannah are very good in this film.

A must see movie...

This film is described as a romantic comedy. It certainly has romance. It is amusing rather than laugh-out-load funny. However it is so much more than this.

Many of us have thought "How would life be different if I had taken a different action at a key point in my life?". This film answers that question for the heroine by cleverly following parallel versions of her life. Very thought provoking, or you can just sit back watch it as a great yarn.

  Sliding Doors (2001)
Review created: 14/05/08

Nice concept, shaky execution--that about sums up the mixed blessings of British actor Peter Howitt's intelligent but forgivably flawed debut as a writer-director. It's got more emotional depth than most frothy romantic comedies, and its central idea--the parallel tracking of two possible destinies for a young London professional played by Gwyneth Paltrow--is full of involving possibilities. It's essentially a what-if scenario with Helen (Paltrow) at the center of two slightly but significantly different romantic trajectories, one involving her two-timing boyfriend (John Lynch) and the other with an amiable chap (John Hannah) who represents a happier outcome. That's the film's basic problem, however: The two scenarios are so romantically imbalanced (one guy's a total cad, the other charmingly sincere) that Helen inadvertently comes off looking foolish and needlessly confused. Still, this remains a pleasant experiment, and Howitt's dialogue is witty enough to keep things entertaining. It's also a treat for Paltrow fans; not only does the svelte actress handle a British accent without embarrassing herself, but she gets to play two subtle variations of the same character, sporting different wardrobes and hairstyles in a role that plays into her glamorous off-screen persona
