Frank Miller adapts his own graphic novels and co-directs with Robert Rodriguez to produce this fiercely original crime anthology that hits right between the eyes with a striking blend of old-school noir and newfangled comic book visuals.

"A fraying sense of morality weaves together three tales: Rourke is a lonely lunkhead hell-bent on avenging a murdered prostitute; Clive Owen is an ex-detective caught between the law and a gang of hookers; and Bruce Willis plays a craggy cop framed for raping the girl he's sworn to protect (Jessica Alba). This is a world where the line between right and wrong is blurred and expressed in steely shades of grey, occasionally broken by the ruby rich splatter of blood."

I first read the Sin City Graphic Novels a few years ago being a fan of Frank Miller ... and was hooked. This movie lives up to Miller's standards (probably because he was directly involved in the movie).

Stylish, sexy, shocking ... see it !!!

Personally I don't know what the fuss is about with regards to this film. It had nothing that made me feel this is good, or this is entertaining ! Maybe I need to see it again to be convinced but on first viewing it was awful !

"It's going to be blood for blood and by the gallon - these are the old days, the bad days, the all-or-nothing days." That's a promise made good by Mickey Rourke's street tough psycho in the brash, beautiful and breathlessly violent Sin City. Frank Miller adapts his own graphic novels and co-directs with Robert Rodriguez to produce this fiercely original crime anthology that hits right between the eyes with a striking blend of old-school noir and newfangled comicbook visuals.

A fraying sense of morality weaves together three tales: Rourke is a lonely lunkhead hell-bent on avenging a murdered prostitute; Clive Owen is an ex-detective caught between the law and a gang of hookers; and Bruce Willis plays a craggy cop framed for raping the girl he's sworn to protect (Jessica Alba). This is a world where the line between right and wrong is blurred and expressed in steely shades of grey, occasionally broken by the ruby rich splatter of blood. It's all at once seedy and seductive..

"HUMOUR BLACK AS NIGHT"

Miller and Rodriguez amplify the hardboiled style with point-blank dialogue and humour black as night (at one point Owen chinwags with Benicio Del Toro's half-decapitated corpse). However, one snag of this high-concept approach is the instant barrier it creates, softening the impact of routine butchery, but also ruling out any chance of emotional involvement. Willis offers the most sympathetic portrayal, as well as the least self-conscious, but the emphasis is definitely not on shaping complex characters. Instead Sin City offers an intoxicating supply of guilty pleasure that makes Vegas look like Disney World.

  FRANK MILLERS SIN CITY
Review created: 06/04/08

When this film first came out, it didn't look like my type of film so I didn't watch it. End of story right? WRONG!!!! It was on last night (05/04/2008)on BBC3 at 21:20. BCFC lost to Wigan 2-0 so I wasn't exactly looking forward to watching Match of the Day...
Flicking through the channels, nothing really caught my eye (whats going on Sky/Virginmedia????) Therefore, I thought I'd give this film a go.....

F@**%!!G WOWSER!!!!!!!! WHAT AN ACE FILM!!!! I saw the name Elijah Wood on the credits and thought "I knew there was a reason I didn't watch this film"
But I was pleasantly surprised by the pure evil emenating from his character.
My checklist for a good film goes thus:-
Goodies V Baddies:- Check
Guns/Explosions:- Check
Car chase:- Check
Soft core porn:- Check
Super strength/abilities:- Check
Gore:- Check
My wife doesn't really understand it, so I have to explain it to her making myself look good:- Check!
This film ticks all my boxes and it should yours too.
Love from Shadystorm

  SIN-ful!

This is one of the most striking, memorable, imaginative and violent films to have come out in a long, long time. It is a cliched ridden flick where nothing is taken too seriously - especially life - and where anything goes.
Expect to meet hookers, mercenaries, hit men, good cops, bad cops, strippers and thugs in Sin City. This tells three stories, that are ingeniously subtley linked together.

The most interesting story is Bruce Willis' as Hartigan. A cop who protected a little girl when she was younger, and in a cruel twist of fate has to protect her again when she is older (and played by Jessica Alba). It's the most detailed story, with the best character development.

The best character, however, is Mickey Rourke's Marv. A tough, unbeatable and ugly man who is out to avenge the death of a hooker who gave him things he had never dreamed of. It's a slightly simple story, but it's effective, violent, and unlike the other stories in the film, filled with dark humour.

Clive Owen is the weakest main character. He plays Dwight with a lot of gusto, but the character doesn't have the same heart that the others does, as he tries to stop Benicio Del Toro's troublemaker. This story also includes the infamous scene directed by Quentin Tarantino, where Dwights dead body starts talking again. There's nothing wrong with Tarantino, he's a great director, but in Sin City, his scene feels out of place. It doesn't flow with the rest of the film, and jars you out of the mood. It still is an interesting scene, however.

Of course, there are also some brilliant baddies. Elijah Wood's cannibal is creepy, while Nick Stahl relishes in the dirtyness of Yellow B######.

This DVD is sadly lacking in the extras department. the menu system looks gorgeous, and is great fun to watch, but the there is only an 8-minute behind the scenes that doesn't really reveal anything and only just scratches the surface. If you want extras, wait for the special edition that is rumoured to be coming soon.

But Sin City is a film worth seeing, extras or not. It's stylised violence, splashes of colour, and gritty noir is mesmerising, and is a truly unique experience in film.

  A GOOD FILM
Review created: 19/10/06

A good film - but I wasn't expecting the sheer amount of gore that is thrown at you in this film. It makes Tarantino look like The Tweenies. Its a shame really, because if i'd have known in advance I would have been prepared for it and would have enjoyed it on a completely different level. As it was, I enjoyed the styling and photography which has painstakingly created to look and feel as much look a 'graphic novel' as possible. The script is corny and somewhat cheesy, but when you begin to imagine it is a comic book you appreciate that its been very cleverly written. Overall, an original and interesting film which I would have appreciated more if I had been prepared for the amount of violence in it.

  In Dark and Red
Review created: 26/07/06

More than turning his graphic novel into a film Frank Miller has turned his film into a graphic novel, so expect some of the finest arty graphic work. The look is every bit designed like the novel genre it’s drawn from, even the comic frames are recreated – only here they move. It’s like never seen before on screen.

Actors are more and more asked to stray off their acting lessons and perform new kinds of characters and heroes. Here the realism is a cross between the cold grimness found in old gangster movies and the super-heroism found in modern graphic novels. It’s as realistic and credible as a comic strip. The lines are overacted with dramatic tones, girls with slender curves and guys with square heads bend their play to accommodate the ink lines – even some heads are given a thorough refacing to look like dark toons. And guess what: it works, it’s even genius.

The script is an intricate jigsaw of interwoven short stories sown with the darkest humor – a hell of a work.

But… here comes the downside. The tandem Tarantino-Rodriguez is on the job, so you’ll have abundant bloodshed, extreme violence, and some of the most insane mutilations – and mind you: it’s repulsively gore at times. “Yeesh!” Since our censorship censor love and what feels good (they call it ‘dirty’) and populate our minds with what hurts and as many evils as hell can provide (they call it ‘clean’), you won’t be spared any of it. So prepare to feel sick and possibly avert you eyes from time to time.

To sum the picture up, this film introduces you into the worst of all worlds: Sin City – a blend of striking creativity and gore insanity – so don’t expect to have sweet dreams afterwards (well, unless Jaime King or Alexis Bledel come flying through your night that is).

I liked this dvd because it's not your mainstream film, it's very much like a comic book in the use of colour and short clips. I'd seen the film at the cinema, enjoyed it & knew that I would watch it again.

This film combinds a sense of being animated whilst using real actors. It is filmed in almost mono-chrome with splashes of colour which is really different, and inhances the mood and feel of the film. A good watch.

Must - see Rodriguez film !
Review created: 18/06/09
by:

Well, where do I start with this film, surreal would be a start I guess, but then after watching planet terror which Rodriguez had a part to play in, I knew I had to see more from this guy ! The filming is crisp, in black and white, the story line is good, centred mainly around violence - so if you don't like gore then this won't be for you !

If you like Tarantino stuff then I think this film (and other Rodriguez titles) would be in a genre you'd probably quite like !

loved it; occasionally felt overdramatised with the seriousness, but otherwise excellent. admittedly was disappointed about josh hartnett's fleeting appearance as a seemingly unimportant character at the beginning, but one cannot have everything.

  Sin City DVD Review
Review created: 10/11/08
by:

The DVD came in a bubblewrapped packaging in a small parcel sized packet. The condition of the box was ridiculously good! I couldn't make out a single scratch on the case exterior or interior. The DVD rom itself was in similar condiiton, almost as though it had never been used! The speed of the delivery and responsiveness of the seller was also most satisfying. She even sent a small note saying thanks with it :) This DVD second hand on the market averages around 5 pound so I saved some money and ended up with a better condition box and rom.

Once again very pleased with the entire transaction and would almost definetely buy from this seller again.

interesting film...dark and definately not mainstream.Ok killing off Brucey in the first 5 mins. was a bit off- but well, it kept his fee`s down. The fact that you have several plots going on but very cleverly linked was a big hit, also the outrageous gratuatous violence was strangely appropriate.
On the -ve side...well a bit visually dark(yes that was the point, but a bit overdone), having Bruce W. plastered all over the cover and promo-material...WELL, GREAT MARKETING ,even if he doesn`t actually do anything in the film.
Over-all, 7/10...not EPIC, but unique enough to warrant a thumbs up--- is it me ,or is it not so cool to have a `hero` who WELL.... is pretty unpleasant...time for some therapy time perhaps...
