"Hooked On You" starts with a wailing police siren, which is surprisingly joined by a mellow, beautifully strummed guitar. Add some keyboards, a straight-outta-church-on-Sunday vocal line, and you're wrapped up tight in this world of "Silken" harmony. This Atlanta-based group was discovered by Keith Sweat, and his influence shows on sexy numbers like "I Can Go Deep." But Silk's music is generally understated and smartly underproduced. The songs are simple, well-crafted showcases for Jimmy Gates, Gary Glenn, and Silk's other talented voices. The result is the kind of solid, gospel-inflected R&B that washes over the spirit and stirs the heart.
