Silent Hill

As a fan of the whole Silent Hill genre i felt it my duty to write an honest review about this film. Firstly, the fact that it was unfairly slated by the film critics who know as much about the actual story behind Silent Hill as they do about the climate change of Uranus!! is completely unfair. Yes, it is a movie adaptation from the Playstation game series & also from the comic book series, but there is much more to this movie than meets the eye. It isn't your everyday run-of-the-mill teen slasher movie that has been churned out by the industry to numb our very existences, no, no, Silent Hill actually has more life in it than that (excuse the pun!!) For starters, it is briliantly fimed & the soundtrack by Akira Yamaoka (who composed the actual music score for the PS games series) fits the various scenes of the movie exceedingly well, with it's haunting melodies & at times insanely creepy sound effects that basically dare you to watch this movie with not only the lights out, but the back-door slightly ajar as well. For anyone who hasn't heard of the Silent Hill PS games or for that matter played any of them, then this film is probably not for you & i suspect this is what the critics meant whilst damning it straight back to hell. However, based on the suspicion that very few of them have actually heard of Silent Hill or played any of the games themselves before reviewing it seems a tad hypocritical i'm sure you'll agree, but then that is what they get paid for. If you are a fan, as i am of the PS game series, then you will be aware that in the game you can spend countless hours not actually doing that much (or so it would appear), exept for running around in the Silent Hill fog (...scary!!) searching for clues & being treated to various drawn out cut scenes that in fairness are much better than the rest of the horror game genres cutscenes. But this all adds to the appeal of Silent Hill, the fact that it does keep you on tenderhooks & is guaranteed to make you hit the ceiling (as next doors cat lets out a screech that should come from no animal...EVER!!!), the fact that it is much more scary & demented than any other game/comic/film like it & the fact that it moves at a pace that should not be described as slow or steady, but more of it's own pace, basically saying "Hey, i'm just gonna wait here a while & see what happens, YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT BUDDY!!!" whilst all the while taking refuge on high & watching over all the other recent horror style releases scurrying around trying to cram everything into 90 minuites. The Silent Hill PS games are one of the highest rated horror genre games to have been made & set the bedrock for everything that followed & with a movie industry churning out schlock horror by the bucketfull in recent years, this movie should really do the same. It isn't so much a scary film as it makes you feel uncomfortable in a comfortable way & granted it will seem confusing to anybody who is unfamiliar to Silent Hill, but for those of you who are & love the game series etc...then this film is a must see!!! Great original characters, a plot that is sure to evolve in future releases with many twists & turns to come & a deeply haunting soundtrack, Silent Hill is still the best horror film of the past few years & hopefully will spawn a sequel sooner rather than later. As the sign says: "WELCOME TO SILENT HILL".
