In a way, this is a turning point for the band; it gave them their first 'hit' single (Hoppipolla) and saw them achieve mainstream recognition for the first time. It is a real consolidation of their sound, and - to my mind, atleast - represent them at the peak of their songwriting, musical and production abilities. Whilst their breakthrough single is a joyous, uplifting and relatively short piece, other tracks are the longer, more exploratory journeys like their previous two albums. Personally, I prefer this release to the more sponaneous, more 'under-produced' sound of their latest album, as I believe this album represents a band truly perfecting their sound.

Anybody wanting a beginner’s guide to the music of Sigur Rós will likely find this 2005 album the perfect introduction to their unique and haunting sound. A typical Sigur Rós song gradually moves from nursery rhyme stillness to noisy, cathartic apotheosis, with falsetto Icelandic voices raised in eerie sing-song harmony mantras under a sheer wall of symphonic strings and droning, fuzzed-out guitars. Even with the expected language/cultural barrier there’s enough naked emotion here to bring tears of epiphany to your eyes.

In short, it’s a work of rare maturity, from the understated simplicity of the cover art to the autumnal beauty of the music itself.
