Must have Lens for the professional or amateur user

I bought this lens for indoor and landscape photography. I have had the lens for about 6 weeks and used it recently on holiday in Gran Canaria. The results are fantastic and look totally professional (even though I have only been into photography for 6 months). My camera is a Nikon D70s and this lens is well matched and silent in operation. The auto-focus is lightning fast and sharp.
The indoor shots are superb, I was amazed how much of the room was captured at close range. This lens won the award for 2006, when you see your results you will understand why. If there is one adverse side to this lens it would be this: On some angle shots I had distortion around the edges, however, I have overcome this by fitting a starlight filter, which also protects the lens coating.

Well, what's not to like? Soooo wide yet gives extremely good detail. Landscapes of course. Just waiting for those Autumn colours now. But in a tight corner in house or architecture, buildings whatever. even the over the top distortion can be fun. I just started using mine with D200 for odd awkward machine in factory corner. It pays to take a good pic with definition when selling albeit mucky sometimes.

Very nice lens for the money

This lens is really, really wide and great fun to use. Given the price, it's excellent value for money. When used at 10mm, it is noticeably wider than the widest Nikon AF-S lens (the 12-24mm - which is twice the price too) so will give your landscape shots even more dramatic effect. Yes, there's some distortion at 10mm, but it doesn't take away from the results in everyday use. It's study and well-built, though the lens cap is terrible (get a Nikon 77mm cap and keep the Sigma in the box). Autofocus is very quick and rarely hunts up and down the range. It's for crop sensor cameras (APS-C) only, so full frame sensor owners should look elsewhere - though it will work on a D3, but in cropped sensor mode. This and the Nikon 12-24mm AF-S are the only autofocusing choices for Nikon D40 or D40x users, and I'm glad I went for the cheaper and wider Sigma!

Considering the price I would have to say that this lens has to score an excellent, with very little else coming close. A little on the heavy and bulky side, this is offset by the performance of this item, which can be picked apart by those types that have a fixation on measuring things, but for we mortals, this Sigma more than delivers. It has to be said that this is not a pro spec lens but stop it down a bit and its just fine. I paid £250 for mine second hand on eBay, and I think I did well, as they often fetch near to new price. Bear in mind that some say that the glass dome of the objective may preclude fitting a skylight or UV filter but I managed it OK.I love mine to bits and I feel anyone would be more than happy with what this Sigma offers.

  Wide angle on a budget
Review created: 26/06/08

By any standards this is a good lens, when you compare this to the closest Nikon has to offer at this focal length then you see that this is a great lens.
For around half the money of the nearest Nikon, owning this lens makes plenty of sense. The build quality is fantastic and the weight of the item gives you a good impression of the amount of glass within. Image quality is very good, there will be better out there but as i`ve already said, at this price i would say it is peerless.

  Sigma 10-20mm Great Buy
Review created: 08/09/09

Need a lens for those wide angle shots and yet do not want to spend that much ? This is the lens for you, better in my humble opinion than Nikon's own. Clear precise and quality all in the one package as most sigma products seem to be. Used it as a standard lens for a wedding and worked well in both wide angled mode and for those close up portrait type shots. In fact most of the comments from guests that bought prints were the "personal" up close shots and how good they were.

Excellent lens, pin sharp, terrific value. Spend twice as much on a Sigma f2.8 throughout the range? I don't think so! Snap them up while you can!

  Very Good

I already have the Nikon 12-24mm and though I'd like to go a little wider so I got a copy of the Sigma 10-20mm. Truth be told the extra wide angle doesn’t really make a lot of difference, that’s no fault of the lens though. But basically, it’s very good, it works well and is sharp and the distortions are surprisingly low for such a wide angle lens. So does what it says on the tin basically, I’d recommend it. I’d also recommend the Nikon 12-24mm though.

Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon
Review created: 02/07/09
by:

I read some mixed reviews about this lens which almost put me off buying it, although I have to say it has performed excellently at all focal lengths.
All my other lenses are Nikon's own & my only gripe with this lens is the manual focus is the opposite way round to Nikon's own lenses & it has a slow maximmum aperture but is excellent value for money compared to Nikon's wide angle.

  A Stunner of a Lense
Review created: 02/03/09

This Sigma 10-20 piece of kit gives me all I've been looking for in a wide angle lense. Its sharp and the colurs are true. I've used it on my D80 and S3Pro to excellent effect now to utilise it on my new S5Pro cant wait for Prage (where I go in a couple of weeks!) I'm sure the images will be live up to my expectations!!
Cheers Sigma!!

  forget the rest.....
Review created: 22/02/09

smaller, lighter, cheaper, sharper and better wide range than Nikon's own 12-24mm. I have owned both and can speak from experience when I say the sigma is the better lens, I was suprised by this as well...
Save yourself £200 buy the Sigma and sit back knowing you own the best wide angle lens save for the £1400 14-24mm.

Wow! what a lens. It's great value for money.
Using a lens with such a wide angle is great fun; wild and wacky angles are a there for the taking! Add to that the great architectural shots and it's a dream.
But, why the Sigma? It's low price (compared to big camera brand lenses) yet it's a solid little lens with great optical quality. Before buying I was able to take some test shots with both this Sigma 10-20mm and a Nikon 12-24mm f/4.0. Which was best? The Nikon - but only just. The test shots taken at max aperture were a tad sharper in the corners/edges but stop down a bit and no real world difference. So, given the price difference it was a no brainer; had to be the Sigma.
On a recent trip to Iceland my son and I used it extensively on our D80 & D200 cameras, it performed wonderfully. Autofocus was quick and quiet, depth of field tremendous, and allowed great shots to be taken inside the old buildings. The only caveat, don't use a polarising filter at the wide end of the zoom range - the field of view is so wide the filter effect only applies in the middle part of the frame leaving a strange pattern. Better to use a graduated filter instead.
Would I recommend this lens - YES!
