In the third installment of the wildly popular SHREK series of computer-animated movies, everyone's favorite hygienically challenged green ogre (voiced by Mike Myers) faces both parental and royal responsibility when his wife, Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), finds out that she is pregnant and that her father, King Harold (John Cleese), is on his death bed. The shock of these revelations leads Shrek on a journey with his loyal companions Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) to seek out another heir to the throne--an awkward young boy named Artie Pendragon (Justin Timberlake). Waiting in the wings is the scheming Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who sees the perfect opportunity to make his own bid for power and rallies a villainous crew to attack the castle. Taking over the reins from director Andrew Adamson, Raman Hui and Chris Miller fill the land of Far, Far Away with even more fairy-tale characters in SHREK THE THIRD. Although this takes away from Shrek's own screen time, it introduces the highly amusing Princess Squad--which includes Snow White (Amy Poehler) and Cinderella (Amy Sedaris)--and the bullying Lancelot (John Krasinski), among others. And, as always, this SHREK outing features many pop-culture references, even managing to nod to two horror films (THE EXORCIST and ROSEMARY’S BABY) in a single shot. The movie also allows for more hilarious interplay between Donkey and Puss in Boots, resulting in a comedic adventure tale that, while over-populated, is still undeniably entertaining.

The third instalment of this excellent franchise, sadly when compared to it’s predecessors it comes short but still a viewable film.

Plot Summary:

Fiona's father the King of Far Far Away passes away, Shrek becomes the reluctant successor of the throne.

Shrek decides to find the legitimate heir so he can return to his beloved swamp.

As with the previous films lots of humorous parodies which make a second viewing a must in order to get them all.

My favourite scene is the dream sequence of baby ogres invading Shrek’s cottage

Some nice 'extras' on this DVD
It may be more cost effective to buy the three film boxset

The Third Installment Of The Popular Animated Movie
Review created: 06/08/07

This film isn't as good as its predecessors!
It was a bit of a let down really, but i still enjoyed parts of it.
Mike Myers is back as Shrek, Along with Donkey (who has become a father to half donkey, half dragon babies) & Puss In Boots for the Third (and hopefully final) installment of the Popular animated comedy.

The things i disliked about this film were: (and i think there is more than i liked) for starters there were far too many characters to connect with.
The plot outline which started out quite good, turned into a farce and a ploy to get Fiona & Shrek back to the beloved swamp.
With the amount of time taken to "use" all the character's the plot kind of just fades into the background, bacoming as if the film is going nowhere.
There is no spark, the other 2 films made me want to stay in the room and watch whereas this well quite frankly i couldn't have cared if i watched it or didn't.
All in all i didn't enjoy this film one iota.
I'm not saying don't watch it, or that you will hate it too, its just in my opinion the storyline could have been a whole lot better, there should have been a lot less characters taking up too much screen time and therefore blocking the way for the storyline development.

  SHREK THE THIRD -

When Fiona's father and King of Far Far Away passes away, the clumsy Shrek becomes the immediate successor of the throne. However, Shrek decides to find the legitimate heir Artie in a distant kingdom with his friends Donkey and Puss in Boots to be able return to his beloved house in the swamp with the pregnant Fiona. Meanwhile, the envious and ambitious Prince Charming joins the villains of the fairytales plotting a coup d'état to become the new king. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

When the King of Far, Far Away 'croaks', it is up to Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots go off to bring back the next heir to the throne, Artie. Whilst Shrek and his crew are gone, Prince Charming brings together all evil fairy tale creatures in an attempt to take over as the new king.

Shrek the Third finds the big, green ogre and his lovely wife Fiona filling in for her parents due to her father, King Harold and his deteriorating health. As Harold gets weaker and weaker, he asks Shrek to take over as king of Far Far Away. Not wanting to leave behind the good life of living in his humble swampy abode, he searches for the only other heir that could take his place, an awkward teen named Arthur. Meanwhile, that devilish Prince Charming has plans of his own as he gathers all the evil characters he can find to take over and create his own happily ever after.

In this second sequel of the Shrek franchise, I found much of what worked in the first two films to be proudly on display. The big green ogre voiced by Mike Myers and the oftentimes hilarious relationship he has with Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas) is still comic gold. And thankfully, we get more of that smooth kitty the third time out, and Mr. Banderas brings out Puss’ rico suave like the champ he is. The many other characters that populate Far Far Away still make for some witty and laugh out loud humor, especially the Gingerbread Man. He makes me feel bad for eating his relatives.

And as with the third in any franchise, there are many more characters that have supporting roles. Some of the most clever involve Snow White (Amy Poehler), Cinderella (Amy Sedaris), Rapunzel (Maya Rudolph) and Sleeping Beauty (Cheri Oteri) who puts her narcolepsy to good use, while Snow White enjoys a little song with a bit of a twist. Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) is back and he’s still looking to get rid of Shrek once and for all. His opening moments in the film really shine and he almost garners some sympathy for his pathetic self. I always thought there must be something wrong with this guy.

As for the look and sound of the film, the third is truly a sight to behold. The animation was stunning with several moments that felt as real as any live action flick. You can’t take your eyes off it. Visually, it is very compelling and it gives the animated characters depth. This is probably the best looking of all three movies. And add to that a very well-placed soundtrack including Paul McCartney and Wings addition to the 007 series, “Live and Let Die” (albeit, it context, it’s a little twisted) and the Dionne Warwick and friends sappy love fest, “That’s What Friends Are For” courtesy of Merlin (Eric Idle). This series has always used music to its advantage… it still holds true here. And it’s always nice to hear Donkey performing classic Harry Chapin; seriously, this is funny stuff.

Even though I enjoyed many of the additions to the cast, they did seem to take away from the Shrek charm a bit. The story tends to get a bit bogged down with unnecessary cameos and too much going on. I appreciated all the fun that this star-studded cast brings, but at times it didn’t work. Emphasizing all the side characters took a little bit of screen time from the more developed characters over the past two movies. This left me wanting more of the folks I’ve grown to love in Far Far Away. One of the most notable additions is Justin Timberlake who plays a supposed loser named Artie. Even the animation made this guy look pretty. So it was lacking in credibility when the Dungeons and Dragons dorks pick on him as does everyone else. Yet he does do a nice enough job that for awhile, I forgot the dude used to be in N’Sync.

ok film at the end of it all...

Still making us laugh, Of the 3 films this is 2nd Best.

Please rate this review,Thanks: Shrek and Fiona's (Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz, respectively) fairy-tale wedding has gone off without a hitch, yet just as the beaming newlyweds prepare to enjoy their blissful "happily ever after," the sudden death of King Harold (John Cleese) finds everyone's favorite ornery ogre being reluctantly fitted for the royal crown. Troubled to learn that not only will he be compelled to rule Far Far Away, but that he and Fiona are also expecting a little ogre, Shrek determines to track down his new bride's rebellious cousin Artie (Justin Timberlake) — the one true heir to the throne — in order to focus on fatherhood without the added distraction of having to preside over the kingdom. As Shrek sets out with faithful companions Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) to locate the medieval high-school slacker and bring him back to become the reigning sovereign of Far Far Away, handsome snake Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) slithers back to the castle in the company of the dreaded Captain Hook (Ian McShane) to stage a diabolically timed coup and assume control of the throne. Now, as Shrek, Donkey, and Puss in Boots do their best to wrangle up the feisty Artie, Fiona must enlist the aid of fighting princesses Snow White (Amy Poehler), Sleeping Beauty (Cheri Oteri), Rapunzel (Maya Rudolph), and Cinderella (Amy Sedaris) to barricade the castle and fend off Prince Charming's invading army of fairy-tale villains until her beloved husband can return with the cavalry to save the day.

Still very funny,I would but this 2nd best out of the 3 films but it is always hard to beat the original of any film.

I decided to by this DVD for my children (I have 3 boys) because I felt sure it would appeal to all their ages. We have seen all the previous Shrek titles and have all enjoyed them, adults and children alike. We were not disappointed by the third movie and I am sure we will watch it again and again.

  Shrek The Third (DVD)
Review created: 09/04/08

The summer of threequels continues with Shrek The Third, a serviceable CGI toon with enough wry humour to keep weary parents amused. This time, the big green ogre with the soft centre is threatened with the job of kingship, and embarks on a quest to find another heir to take his place on the throne of Far Far Away. He finds one in the form of geeky teenager Artie (Justin Timberlake), but he doesn't really fancy the job either.

It would be simple enough to dismiss Shrek The Third as nothing more than a soulless, corporate cash-cow, and of course, it is a soullless, corporate cash-cow, but that doesn't make the film itself less entertaining. What you get in this third instalment is more of the same - more ogre-ish grumpiness from Mike Myers, more of Eddie Murphy's wisecracking Donkey routine, more purring amorality from Antonio Banderas.

In fact, this is not so much a sequel as an upgrade - like Shrek II, but running on Windows Vista. The animation is flawless, though in truth, it has the same theme-park pallor as the previous Shrek flicks - there's never been an atmosphere in this hermetic world.

"GREAT ANIMATION AND GOOD JOKES"

The big theme this time is parenthood, best expressed by a freaky dream sequence in which our hero is overrrun with thousands of baby Shrekettes. Donkey's been getting busy with his lady dragon too - thankfully, we never discover quite how, but their winged mule offspring are thoroughly charming. In short, great animation and some good jokes (and with seven writers, they'd better be good) but it's all starting to feel very familiar.

This is definitely one of the worst films i've ever paid money to see. I think it's about time Dreamworks and Pixar stop churning out these souless computer animated rehashes. With a completely absent storyline and jokes that come few and far between even small children will find it hard to enjoy this mindless monstrosity.

It is a truly great film that can be watched over and over again - by children AND adults alike as the humour running throughout the film is on two levels. The animations are just fantastic. I already had the two previous Shrek films which are equally good and wanted this later example too.
