Shining Through is part war movie part love story, a classic film in the old style of movie making with enough romance to keep the romantics happy and enough action to keep the action lovers happy.
Directed by David Seltzer in 1992, starring Michael Douglas, Melanie Griffith, Liam Neeson, Joely Richardson and Sir John Gielgud.
The story centers around the character Linda Voss (Griffith) who starts to work in an attorneys office as a secretary in 1940. Unbeknown to her at the time, her boss (Douglas)is the head of a spy network. The two quickly become lovers, so it is understandable that when she finds out what the 'firm' is really about and she volunteers to go and work in Germany, he is a little reluctant. But because of her fluent language ability she gets the assignment.
She is infiltrated into the home of a top ranking German officer (Neeson)and then the film really gets going, with plenty of twists and turns, and the film has a fair amount of suspense.
Richardson and Gielgud give excellant performances in the film. Whilst it is fair to say that it is not Douglas's or Griffith's best performances both combine well on screen.
My advice is to get the film and watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon by the fire.
