Life doesn't have to be unfair. Certain people make it that way, but they can't destroy you.
If you want a movie about what life is really like in a prison, rent a documentary. The actors for the prison guards and warden intentionally avoided their real counterparts, because they didn't want to say it was based on anyone.
This is the story about one man who lives in an unfair world, yet doesn't let anything bring down his spirits. Andy takes life's little pleasures, and shares them with other prisoners.
It is symbolic of the difficult times many people go through, and how one can get through them. Andy refuses to allow sadistic wardens, a few bullying fellow prisoners, or other unfair conditions get the better of him.
There are times when it's hard to look, when it seems there will be no justice. But there is hope in the way Andy deals with everything. And hope is what this film is about.
A few excellent special features include interviews about how this film got made (the producer didn't want to finish the script because it was so good she didn't want it to be ruined by a weak ending. Morgan Freeman was not what the director had in mind.)
And how it influenced others (people from church groups get together and talk about, a bit about the IMDB.)
Altogether an interesting DVD. There are other editions with more features, but this one has enough for me.
