British comedy zombie spoof starring Simon Pegg. His life is at a crossroads and everything seems to be going wrong for him, until zombies try to take over the earth and well things start to pick up ! He becomes the hero, alpha male and all round good guy as he tries to save his Mom, step dad, ex-girlfriend, best mate etc from the dead slow un-dead.
There are some very funny moments along the way, a real must see, in fact it's hard to miss as it seems to be on TV at least every month !
Great stuff !

Shaun of the Dead

Shaun of the Dead manages to be both the best comedy and the best horror that I´ve seen in ages. This is an absolutely brilliant, action-packed movie featuring the cream of British comedy talent caught up in a zombie gore-fest. It is rare that I get this excited about a film and go to see it to find that it is even better than I had hoped.

Shaun is a normal bloke living in London, trolleying along through the daily grind from work to pub to bed. He is a disappointment to his girlfriend and can´t or won´t shake off his best mate who is generally abusive and unhelpful. However in the event of a zombie attack Shaun is no longer the loser. He gathers his mates, girlfriend and mum together and decides to hole up in his local, while slaughtering a bunch of the undead along the way.

The film stars and was co-written by Simon Pegg and he does a fantastic job. The other writer and director is Edgar Wright. This pair worked together previously on the excellent TV series Spaced, it was full of character, clever direction and great gags and references. Simon Pegg is extremely talented and he makes this film work, reprising his best mate relationship with Nick Frost (also in Spaced). Their double act is the central relationship and the one which provides most of the laughs.

Kate Ashfield plays Shaun´s girlfriend Liz, Dylan Moran (Black Books) plays David, the snidey flatmate of Liz, and his girlfriend Dianne is played by Lucy Davis (The Office). Along with Shaun and his best mate Ed they form the main group and each plays their part well, especially Moran who is exceptionally detestable. Bill Nighy makes an appearance as Shaun´s stepfather Philip and there are some great scenes between the pair. A host of other notable people have cameo appearances including Jessica Stevenson (Spaced), Matt Lucas (Little Britain) and Chris Martin (Coldplay).

The film moves along at a nice pace, building up the tension as Shaun goes about his life. There are many directorial touches which are familiar from Spaced and they are very effective here too, such as the quick montage of Shaun getting ready for work. The comedy is genius; some of the lines are achingly funny. The horror element definitely comes second but the gore effects are as good as any I´ve seen and I´m surprised it got away with a 15 certificate.

The zombies have great make-up and they shuffle about pathetically in the old school zombie way. There are several nice effects like the hole through the middle of the zombie girl that Shaun and Ed find in their garden, or the intensely gory death of David as he is literally pulled apart by hordes of zombies. However, there isn´t much in the way of real horror here, by the time David dies you hate him so much that it is really satisfying to see him meet a nasty end and most of the action scenes are more comedy than anything else - but this is what Pegg does best and it can´t fail to make you laugh.

It is impossible to do any of the scenes justice in words and so I think you really need to see this to appreciate how funny it is. I am admittedly a big fan of Simon Pegg and most of the rest of the cast, the cultural references in Spaced were spot on and it´s great to see them making movies. Romero, the father of the zombie genre, liked this film so much he gave Pegg and Wright a cameo in Land of the Dead.

this film is fantastic, but you kinda do have to have a sick sense of humour to like it as it has a touch of black comedy in it.
i loved this film and keep laughin every time, the actors are amazing and so is the storyline and script. it is a great british movie and it'll make you proud.
however just watch out as if you squeemish you may want to look awayat parts as it is basically all about zombies, that eat people, obviously.
i would like to make everybody in the counrty buy this film and watch it all day long, its just so good!

Mix horror, romance, a big dose of dark British humour - and you get a deadly concoction - you get Shaun of the Dead.

Spoof movies so often fail with me, especially the Hollywood variety, such as Scary Movie, where you see the humour flying out at you from a mile away. I have to admit, I was a little hesitant about watching this movie. I only did so because my brother had it on DVD and insisted that I saw it. I also remember it being released in UK cinemas about the same time as the remake of the 70s zombie thriller, Dawn of the Dead, which I found disappointing and put me off watching zombie movies for a long time. But with Shaun of the Dead, I was pleasantly surprised.

It starts with Shaun, the protagonist, played by actor/screen-writer/funny-man, Simon Pegg. He's twenty-nine, stuck in a dead-end job, his seventeen year old colleague makes fun of him, he has an awkward flatmate Pete (Peter Serafinowicz), he hates his scrutinising step-father Philip (Bill Nighly), he has issues with his mother Barbara (Penelope Winton), his lazy best-mate Ed holds him back in life (Nick Frost), he gets dumped by his girlfriend Jenny (Kate Ashfield) and he spends all day in the Winchester Pub. Yes, Shaun is in a bit of a rut. Then one night, without ever really knowing why, Shaun's locality becomes `neighbourhood of the living dead'. He is at first oblivious to it all, suffering from a hangover, but soon he realises that zombies are after his blood and he has to buck up his ideas quickly to survive. For once in Shaun's life, he has a plan. With Ed as his side-kick and armed with a cricket bat, a spade and a box of old records (which, by the way, make amusing ninja weapons to fend off zombies), and he goes to save his mum and Jenny in Pete's car. Where does he plan to take them to safety? That's right - the Mecca of Shaun's life and the focal point of the film - the Winchester pub. On the way, Shaun picks up Philip and Jenny's housemates David (Dylan Moran) and Dianne (Lucy Davis). They also meet another anti-zombie-vigilante groups that contained Martin Freeman.

The film contains what you expect from a horror, British comedy and romance (kind of); blood, gore, action, slapstick, sarcasm, a witty script, a love interest and, sadly, an obvious plot, but I will talk more about that later.

It has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, such as when Shaun and Ed realise the first zombie they meet isn't actually a drunk girl, but a dead person who wants their blood. And when the group pretend to behave like zombies so they don't bring attention to themselves from the living dead. You will learn there is more than one use to a garden swing-ball. The end is also charming, but I don't want to speak about that.

The acting is convincing for a spoof movie. Especially the lazy, rather obnoxious, Ed, played by Nick Frost, who decides to have a friendly chat on a mobile phone with a mate while surrounded by zombies. He plays your annoying fat mate who slows your life down, but is full of clever quips every now and again. He would also go off on hilarious rants with Shaun about, well, not a fat lot. I wouldn't say there were many outstanding performances or Oscar nominations in the movie though, but the movie was not made for awards. It was made to make you laugh, which is what you will undoubtedly be doing. So therefore, the co-writers Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright (the same team who made the comedy TV-series Spaced and the new movie the Big Fuzz) have certainly achieved

This is a great flim paraody of the dead seris of flims.
Very funny, the flim stars Simon Pegg (from TV spaced) - who plays a shop assistant trying to protect his girl friend and mum from killer zombies. Also stars Nick Frost as the lazy house mate (also from spaced) - who is just the funniest person in the flim. End.

  Twisted comedy at its best!
Review created: 11/03/07
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This great comedy, amusingly described by the poster as "a romantic comedy. With zombies", comes courtesy of the crew who also gave us the excellent TV series Spaced. To be honest, the film can feel like a TV episode that has been stretched out, and this would probably be a problem if the film wasn't so damned funny! It may be low-budget, but this is a film which is to be watched for the gags, almost as if the zombies were mere coincidence in the story.

With the simple premise that Shaun is a loser who is virtually a zombie stumbling through his life and who has just been dumped by his girlfriend, suddenly finds himself the only one capable of saving his (few) friends when zombies take over. There's a fantastic scene where Shaun is walking to the local shop and back, whilst in the background you see the zombies taking over, all the while without Shaun noticing. It's simple, yet remarkably effective. The story is all in the writing, and it certainly shows. Shaun's first reaction to seeing a zombie is priceless ("Oh my god……… she's so drunk!"), and his best friend Ed (Nick Frost) is definitely worth a mention as the only person who is more of a loser in life than Shaun.

The film does begin to stall whenever they attempt a "serious" bit, but the jokes are flowing like the beer in the Winchester Pub they are trying to reach. It's not a particularly gory film, only in one scene towards the end does it get a bit bloody, but the film succeeds so well because it proves that it doesn't have to be gory to get attention. This one is definitely worth a few viewings – you will not be disappointed.

A very, VERY good film.
A well made comedy that is hilariously funny, with a storyline too!
Can be watched several times, and is usually the DVD that gets brought out every time you've got your friends round for pizza and a movie.
Very British, and very funny.

  Shaun Of The Dead

Leave it to the Brits to find the joke in being gobbled by zombies. Shaun, played with comic zip and real feeling by Simon Pegg -- he co-wrote the script with director Edgar Wright -- is a twentyish bloke stuck in soul-sucking North London. Shaun works at an electronics store and tries to hold on, minus commitment, to his girlfriend, Liz (Kate Ashfield), but he hangs happiest at the Winchester Pub, where he and his mates, including the chubby, game-obsessed Ed (Nick Frost), regularly drink themselves into a stupor. That's why Shaun doesn't recognize the living dead -- he looks like one of them. When the telly advises that you must remove the head to kill a zombie, Shaun and Ed bring out bats, shovels and an LP collection. It turns out that the Batman soundtrack album, properly flung, is a handy decapitator.
Though I prefer the hard-core zombie scares of Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later, Pegg and Wright -- who are rumored to resemble a real-life Shaun and Ed -- keep the blood and the laughs gushing. Pegg makes you root for Shaun, even when he's slacking with Ed (did I mention that Frost is priceless?), neglecting Liz and battling with his mum (Penelope Wilton) and cranky stepdad (the great Bill Nighy).

Everyone bonds at the pub, which Shaun deems the ideal place to stand off against the undead. One catch: To get there through ghoul-clogged streets, they need to pass as zombies -- it's the film's hilarity high point. You may even choke up when Shaun and Liz rekindle their flame. But this blast of fright and fun best catches the spirit of George Romero, whose Dead trilogy defined the genre, by knowing that zombies shrieking, "We're coming to get you!" is still an irresistible invitation.

One of the funniest films I've seen for a long time
Review created: 15/01/08

The banality of Shaun and Ed's lives is the usual sort: they have no specific ambitions - they're just sleep-walking towards middle age, keeping themselves entertained down the pub and messing about with their computer games. They are quite content in their comfortable rut. When pushed on the subject, Shaun dallies with the idea of doing something decisive in some vague future, to achieve oh ..., something, but not just yet - in a year or two, perhaps. It's driving Shaun's girlfriend mad. He blows his last chance with her and she dumps him. He's very unhappy about it and spends the evening drowning his sorrows with Ed. When they leave the pub, they're amused to see a couple who seem to be 'devouring' each other. Then a man who appears to be drunk joins in with the chorus of the song they're singing, with an incoherent bellow. When Shaun wakes with a hangover the following day he doesn't notice all the odd things happening around him as he stumbles down to the shop. There are people lurching about with gimpy legs and floppy heads. There's blood. Shaun's oblivious to all the signs. And his failure to observe his peril isn't entirely the result of his hangover. The fact is, they don't look very different from what he normally sees, apart from the blood and the shambolic gait. The vacuous, disconnected look isn't out of the ordinary - though he might've noticed the eyes look a bit peculiar if he was paying attention. No wonder it takes a while to register that something's wrong. When the boys do notice the growing population of hungry dead, they snap into action and, finally, shut the front door. After that, the real fun begins. They've been catapulted out of their comfortable rut. Things are serious. They need a plan. The plan is agreed and they're off ..... not to save the whole world, but at least some of the bits they care about.
It's very very funny and I enjoyed it enormously. It's a zombie film and I liked it in spite of the fact that I don't usually like zombie films. Of course, the story is daft. But the acting is excellent. The comedy element is comical, the horror element is horrible and there are a few very touching scenes. The combination, in my opinion, is extremely entertaining. It still makes me laugh even though I've watched it several times. I recommend the film.

  Zombic-riffic!!!

This one is from Spaced creators Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright. As the poster says, this is a romantic comedy... with zombies.

Pegg plays Shaun, a directionless guy with a nagging girlfriend (who has just dumped him) and an annoying housemate (Nick Frost). At least his housemate is funny. The film follows Shaun as he attempts to win back his girlfriend while protecting his family and friends from a zombie epidemic. The dead have come back to life, you see, just like in a Romero film.

The masterstroke of Shaun Of The Dead is that it doesn't try to parody zombie films, but instead gives you a cute and enjoyable comedy that just happens to take place during an invasion of the undead. The film is filled with references to Romero's zombie films, but it's not like some giant in-joke where all the folks who have never seen Dawn Of The Dead won't understand what's going on.

Shaun Of The Dead is one of the funniest films I've seen in a while. This one has a bit of everything, from cheap fart gags and slapstick to clever film and music references and hilarious set pieces like the battering of a zombie in time to a Queen song. There a few jokes that may go over the heads of some audience members, but that's a very small criticism.

Although some of the humour is skewed toward guys who grew up on Electro compilations, video nasties, and the NME, I still think this is a film that will appeal to just about anyone, so I recommend this whole heartedly to all comedy fans.

If you love Spaced & Hot Fuzz go grab this great film.

Shaun of the Dead - A Classic & VERY British Film...
Review created: 04/06/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

What more could you ask for from a movie?!
Comedy, great acting, a pub in the centre of a zombie takeover and... Shaun! And you know what the best thing about it is? It's British! That's right, you yanks, we're coming back at ya and getting back into the movie making business.
I love the fact that from the beginning scene, in the pub, all of the characters already feel like someone you've known for years. The acting and comedy are completely natural (especially Simon Pegg and Nick Frost - I expect the fact that they lived together has something to do with it!) and I love the parts filmed in proper British suburbia - everytime I watch it I notice different things going on in the background that I hadn't seen before.
Obviously the story is a rip-off from the horror classic "Dawn of the Dead" but, you know what? I really think they did it some justice! "Spaced" fans out there will have already noticed the lads 'borrow' ideas from heaps of other shows and films, and generally pull it off really well!
The zombies of the film are amazingly scary yet comically funny - I think everyone's seen the clip of the girl in their back garden and the record-throwing incident...! And it really helps us in getting an answer to the all-important question; What would YOU do in a zombie attack?! I think a lot of us would do EXACTLY what Shaun did! And don't say you've never thought about it....
A funny, down-to-earth, comedy horror brought to you by British filmakers - highly recommended to all and looking forward to their latest release, Hot Fuzz! Definitely one for a night in with your mates and a damn good giggle - you'll want to watch it all over again by the time it's over!

This film is just brilliant! The special effects, the acting, the make-up, everything. And it's just so funny, it will have you in tears with laughter. It is your basic zombie film, the dead are rising and eating the living but this film just does it funny. You have a bit of romance, action, shooting and the classic line in the film "You have red on you". If you like zombie films and you like a good comedy then you have to see this film.

I'd heard from a few people that the movie was quite good and saw it going cheap on e-bay and decided to buy it for that reason.

It's a very random movie but really good fun to watch with pals although it is less entertaining without them. We all need to watch a bit of bleathered nonsense every now and then ^_^ That's what movies are there for though!

Gosh, where do i start?
This movie is hilarious, if you have a childish, purile sense of humour, this is an absolute must! The effects are great and the characters are very likeble.
It`s a modern day comedy take on the movies that scared us witless as kids (dawn of the dead, zombie flesh eaters etc)you know, the stuff that we can now watch without climbing into mum&dad`s bed in tears with fright haha!!! ( not an attractive thought at 35!!!)
It`s full of british actors, which we would usually find in bbc2 sitcoms, and the plot keeps you gripped until the very end. I have watched this several times in different company, and everyone thinks it`s cool. (and i`ve even watched it on me own!!!!)
I really do think you should give it a go, at least once. Belly laughs guaranteed!!!! love cheesywotsitgal.x
