In Se7en, Daivd Fincher (director of Fight Club and Panic Room) conjures up a delightfully bleak helping of moody, noir-esque thrills around Andrew Kevin Walker's ingenious and engaging script. Se7en is set in a quintessential American city (we are never told which one), where the arm of the law is never quite long enough to prevent the city's criminal underbelly from indulging in all sorts of sinful activity.
Against this backdrop we find the film's two protagonists, played by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman who both deliver fine performances. Pitt plays the young, idealistic and motivated Detective Mills, who is the perfect foil to the pragmatic and world weary Detective Lt William Somerset, played by Freeman.

Mills and Somerset are assigned to hunt down the sociopathic serial killer John Doe, whose murders are grisly sermons designed to warn a corrupt society of the consequences of the seven deadly sins (gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, pride, envy and wrath). Each of his murders becomes an ironic example of the dangers of each sin; his victims are punished for the deadly sin they embody by being forced to indulge in it until it kills them.

Unfortunately for Mills and Somerset, John Doe is as intelligent as he is disturbed, and they can do little but follow in his wake to pick up the pieces until he unexpectedly turns himself in...

Although some people might find the plot a bit too twisty, and the story a bit too morbid, all in all this is a fast paced and witty film, with superb acting from a great cast (also including Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey). This film will leave you guessing until the brain-bendingly clever finale.

As you've probably guessed by now, this isn't the kind of film to watch if you're in need of cheering up. In fact I would go so far as to say that this is one of the most depressing films I have seen for a long time. This film will take you to a dark and frightening place. Crucially though, it's not only dark but interesting and (in a way) enjoyable, highly recommended.

Se7en (Seven) - Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman (Thriller)

Se7en is an interesting and ingenious movie. It’s the story of missionary type serial killer, who forces each of his victims to die by acting out one of the seven deadly sins. The Catholic Church’s seven deadly sins are Gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride, and lust.

When retiring homicide detective Somerset investigates a unique murder of an obese man brutally murdered in his home, ( Script writer Andrew Kevin Walker plays as the corpse) the seasoned investigator in him tells that it is only the beginning. It proved true when mysterious John Doe start killing his victims in a strange religious fashion with extreme cruelty.

Detective Somerset is almost burned out by seeing the senseless violence around him and retiring voluntarily from his profession. He instantly knew that the new murder investigation is going to be a problem to his retirement plans. Still he reluctantly involved in the investigation primarily because of his superior’s insistence, who thinks the replacing detective Mills is too young to handle a case like this. Another reason could be Somerset may also fascinate with the enigmatic killer’s unconventional methods.

Mills, the young detective is energetic and enthusiastic contrary to the calm and wise approach of Somerset. They don’t appreciate each other in the beginning but after the initial animosity they became rather close friends thanks to Mills wife Tracy.

As the methodical murders continue, Mills learns a lot from the seasoned detective Somerset. Together they try to confront the murderer and understand his motivation. Yet something is still elusive, until one day the mysterious murderer surrender himself to the investigating duo with a peculiar demand. Mills and Somerset are about to get involved in something they are not prepared or imagined even in their wildest dreams!

In many qualities this film surpasses many of the so called serial killer movies. Andrew Kevin Walker’s masterly screenplay is the backbone of this bleak thriller. His script, undoubtedly, his magnum opus, alone made this film a modern classic and a study in deviant psychology.

David Fincher made Se7en with remarkable panache while vividly provoking undulating emotions from poignant scenes. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are giving their best performance as Somerset and Mills. You will see a different Brad Pitt in Se7en, not the usual chocolate hero. Kevin Spacey is brilliantly cast as the diabolically mysterious John Doe. His portrayal of the elusive and exceptional serial killer win a lot of accolade to him and many consider the role is his tour de force. Gwyneth Paltrow provides serenity to the scenes as the supportive wife to Brad Pitt’s character Mills. A nihilistic film-noir for the filmophiles and a must for mystery buffs. Enjoy one of the best intellectual thriller of the last decade.

Admittedly, I am not a fan of such films as Se7en. The whole idea of a simple murder bored me. But this was no simple murder. From start to finish, it keeps you enthralled. Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey were brilliant, setting the mood and barreling the story magnificently. Kevin Spacey chilled me to the bone, portraying the murderer brilliantly as a cold, calculated and intelligent man, Brad Pitt did well as the angry, cocky new kid and Morgan Freeman was a brilliant father figure for the majority of the movie. The storyline is brilliant, special effects look outstanding for a 1995 film, the gruesome details of each murder a credit to the creators. The only gripe I have is the ending is forseeable. But even that did not spoil this thoroughly fantastic film.

We bought this film because we had seen it before and thought it was good. It is not however for the squeemish! Starring Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, it is the story of two cops, one young and ambitious and one about to retire, hunting a serial killer. The end is totally unexpected and very clever. If you like a good thriller and have a strong stomach then this one's for you.

Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light ...
[John Milton, Paradise Lost, Book II. Line 432]

"Seven deadly sins, seven ways to die" is the tagline for this intense psychological thriller directed by David Fincher:

~ Detective Sergeant Mills [Brad Pitt] is set to replace Detective Lieutenant Somerset [Morgan Freeman], a world-weary cop retiring after years on the force. Somerset can see no end to the harrowing crimes he has witnessed, the sickness that is the City. Dealing with murder, rape, abuse, and poverty has become the Lieutenant's life and he now hopes for some small shred of peace. Mills, on the other hand, is new to the city; he is arrogant and brash, having little time for Somerset's thoughtful and analytical techniques.

As retirement beckons, so a new spate of killings begin. Like it or not, Somerset is given the investigation by the Captain [R Lee Ermey] while Mills is put on a different case. The murders are soon linked to the same killer - a twisted genius who chooses his victims based on the seven deadly sins in Dante Alighieri's 'The Divine Comedy' - and Mills and Somerset are paired together once more.

Despite their clash of personalities Mills and Somerset strike up a good partnership, Somerset's introspectiveness and Mills's self-confidence turning out to be a useful combination. Each one learns a lot from the other; indeed, Mills's wife [Gwyneth Paltrow] thinks Somerset is a good influence on the husband she is rapidly growing concerned about.

It soon becomes apparent that the 'sins' killer is playing a deadly cat-and-mouse game with the detectives, enjoying watching them either stumble or succeed at every turn in the case ... while he continues to kill according to the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride, lust. They must stop him before he can finish his murder spree and most probably disappear forever ~

Se7en is not only the most accomplished film by David Fincher [Zodiac] but almost certainly - from a writing and directing viewpoint - the best psychological thriller in the history of film and television. There are none of the stereotypical clichés found in countless thrillers of violence, no room for the predictable, for the viewer is kept constantly in the dark until the very end. And the climax is both ferocious and awe-striking ... for once Hollywood kept the outcome a secret until the day of release, not an easy thing to do.

Whatever vision Andrew Kevin Walker had before he took his script to screenwriter David Koepp [Secret Window] was ultimately realized once in the hands of David Fincher. Fincher's dark and rain-driven sewer, his city of sins, has yet to be matched on film. His choice of cast was spot-on. Se7en is a true classic, crossing genres like crime, horror, thriller and police procedural ... dark and moody, harrowing and painful, Se7en will appeal to the darker side within us all.

Co-stars John C McGinley as California [captain of SWAT team]

When you put the likes of Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman on the same set, there is a chemical for magic, and this film collects all this into one ball and explodes it onto your tv.

Easily one of the best story lines that i have come across, and the way that its put onto the screen is nothing short of genius.

A very powerful and unforgettable film, seven reveals the dark and disturbing underworld in which evil stalks.

This film just had to be purchased becuase it has great mysteries and puzzles along with two great actors being, Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt who complemant each other superbly.   Good Plot Twists .... Thats about it.
Review created: 21/05/09

Makes you think. The transition to each murder is a bit to long, especially the shoddy characters.

I'm not going to say a lot. It wasn't bad but it didn't interest me.
Inside Job anyone?

Movies like the silence of the lambs and the Saw films all give us an insight into the mind of a killer however, these particular movies have one thing in common, they all teach lessons...as does "Seven"

Brad Pitt joins Morgan Freeman as he is just about to retire from his Police employment.
After a man is found dead in an apartment, the 2 cops begin their investigation.
At first it looks like natural causes until freeman finds the killer has left a clue, one of the seven deadly sins, hence the name.

This unfolds into a very powerful movie and not for the sickly!
Kevin Spacey plays the genius serial killer who belives he has done nothing wrong and teaches both cops an alternate version of the 7 deadly sins.

For me, the two best bits are 1, most shocking sin is the bed scene...watch out for it! and 2, When Spacey gives Pitt his end of movie "Special Delivery"

For all you men out there,
What would you have done?
Kept him for the gas chamber or shot him?

No doubt in my mind i'd have shot him!!!

Watch the movie and decide for yourself.
Well worth your time and money.

Seven (Deadly Sins) - Pitt and Spacey are brilliant

This film never hit my radar when it was released but we bought it as my daughter is using the 7 deadly sins as a theme for her Art A Level. Clever twists in teh story, sometimes a little far-fetched but overall believable and captivating.

I'm not a Spacey fan but he plays a good psycho. Pitt is excellent in this role and Morgan Freeman is always brilliant. Enjoyable film - glad I bought it
