Serenity (DVD)

This movie is based on a tv series that failed to find an audience but became a cult hit when the episodes were released on dvd.
its fans tend to be bordering on fanatical and call themselves "browncoats". It is produced, written and directed by Joss Whedon, owner of one of the most entertaining and original minds in tv today. He previously brought us "Buffy" and "Angel".

Like his previous efforts, the show works because although its set on a space ship, the characters are full and vibrant. They seem like real people who react as real people would when faced with other-worldly events.The wit, one-liners and sarcasm that made Buffy so enjoyable is alao present.

Though this movie is set in space its ironically more grounded than his previous efforts. No Star Trek aliens in this "verse", just people trying to scratch a living by taking whatever work comes their way (you know smuggling, bank robberies, whatever...!)

The movie features Nathan Fillion as a burned out war-vet whos moral compass is a bit of a burden in his new profession. He plays it like Indiana Jones in space and indeed his fans have started a campaign to have him take over as Indiana Jones. He also played Caleb from Buffy. Gina Torres is his first mate (she previously appeared as Jasmine in Angel) and Adam Baldwin is the more mercenary Jayne.

My boyfriend and I watched this together, and he had not seen Firefly. He definately found it a struggle, and i found i enjoyed the film more after re-viewing Firefly. Other people I talked to love the movie without ever realising there was a tv show.
My advice is buy Firefly and Serenity together. You will love them.

Well well well - an entertaining character driven sci-fi action movie made on a budget! George Lucas hang your beardy head in shame - this is a far more rewarding experience than all of his prequels combined. I sincerely hope they throw a load of cash at Josh Wheedon so that he can bring a more expensive production to go along with the superb writing. I cannot wait for the next instalment and I sure as hell am gonna get my hands on the series

First off I had heard nothing about this film before actually seeing it. I just knew what genre of movie it was. And I am not a particular fan of Joss Whedon's other work; I have never seen an episode of Buffy or Angel or whatever else he may of done. But all that being said, this film totally blew me away when I first saw it. Forget any hype you may of come across. Forget the fact that this is from a cult director of the moment. Dismiss any preconceptions you may have at all. Just sit back and enjoy it.

And that is easily done because this is a quality sci fi movie with a decent plot, fantastic well rounded characters, great actors and a good script. All of it is combined with pretty eye catching special effects and played out in a great believable futuristic setting. Think cowboys in space; they fly spaceships but they pack shotguns. I could wax lyrical for a long time about all that is good about this film, but essentialy there is a baddie, there is a dark conspiracy and there are reluctant heroes. That's all you need to know. It's simply a film well worthy of watching.

And if you do watch it and enjoy it, then make sure you catch a look at Firefly, the original teevee series that the film is based on, because you will absolutely love it. Some of the best small screen viewing that has been made in the last few years, and whoever canned it deserves a headcheck.

Spectacular, action-crammed science fiction adventure from Joss Whedon, the writer/director behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. There's something for all sci-fi fans here, from space battles to an evil military force,from a psychic girl with amazing fighting skills to insane cannibals!

I am a science fiction fan particularly space scifi and this was typical of the type of title I really enjoy. It was action packed very technical and a very good story line. The acting was believable and the special effects were top notch. Excellent watch!!!!

An excellent sci-fi film and so funny you'll be crying.

A true great and a def must for everyone. The humour and the special effects keep you glued and if you haven't seen the episodes that precede this film calld 'Firefly' then you are really missing out.

I've watched these many times and will continue to do so.

500 years in the future when our planet can no longer support us we have found new homes on multiple planets and moons. There was a big war between the alliance of allied planets and the browncoats - people who just don't want to be ruled by anyone.

This sets the story for a great combination of characters that'll have you laugh and cry.

Like many others who have now watched this film, i had little knowledge of the TV series on which it was based. Nevertheless, i enjoyed this film so mush that i am now looking to pick up a reasonably priced copy of the series to find out what all the fanboy fuss was about.

An original story, witty dialogue and impressive special effects for a film with no star names. It follows the crew of the eponymous spaceship as they journey throughout the galaxy, escaping both authorities (in the shape of the Alliance) and the cannibalistic Reavers..ultimately to a truth that could spell the end for society as they know it. Don't want to give anything away, but this is a great evening's viewing and i urge you all to pick up a copy asap.

The DVD is presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital sound and 2.35:1 Anamorphic widescreen. Loads of special features on this DVD including Deleted Scenes, Director Commentary, and several featurettes. Highly recommended.

Its nouthing like buffy .. thank god ! one film to see... it was more a a horror film than a film about some brother looking out for his little sister.. oh yes who happens to have some strang powers .. powers of a woman to kick ass when triggered (some call it PMT). Great film had me on the edge of my seat, Oh and I though is space you use'd lazers, not in this you can harpon as well. The one part that got me is when the tough guy gets harpon'd through the leg ... not fot the faint of heart ENJOY!

I absolutely love this film and I am going to tell you why!

This is another creation of Joss Whedon Creator of Buffy & Angel and brings his Action mixed with comedy to the Big Screen with one of his lesser known Sci-Fi Series Firefly.
Firefly did not do well on TV, but due to Serenity it has also become a Cult Series.

With a Great Story, Special effects and with Joss Whedons sense of humour and Action this is a perfect Visual Treat for Sci-Fi & Action Fans alike.

The Special Features are Great as well, and you see the man him self giving a Introdution on taking a chance on making Serenity. It also has some great Extra scenes & Outtakes.

This is a very enjoyable film, I have watched it several times now and never get bored. It very entertaining and a really good well made film with great realistic acting. Very very recommended

I really loved this film and I hadn't seen any of the Series at the time. I thought that the acting was really good and the characters interesting. The story line was great too, with just the right amount of tension, excitement and humour. In fact I liked it so much that I bought the Series - Firefly as well. It is a real shame that they didn't make any more of them. Hope you find this review helpful!

A weak story line with the title of the film only becoming apparent towards the ending.

A young girl unknowingly holds a secret within her memory, which her brother, and with help from his companions set out to unveil. The revelation of a planet which is probably inhabited, draws the group to land there. Unfortunately all is not well and soon tragedy turns to fear.

Bought this as a replacement, other disc just gave up the ghost, probably played to much. One of my all time favourite films, the cast are brilliant and this film brings to a conclusion the one and only series that was produced. Fantastic.

Absolutely brilliant, as long as it's seen in context. "Serenity" was created by Joss Wheedon to tie up all the loose ends left in his incomplete "Firefly" science fiction series. "firefly" was set in the future, a future where humanity has been forced to leave "Earth that was" and settle in a new star system. Malcolm Reynolds is a war veteran, who was on the losing side in the "battle of serenity valley" the bloodiest battle of the civil war, and together with his crew on the firefly class ship "serenity", he lives as an outlaw, keeping one step ahead of "the Alliance" the government who he fought against in the war. In the film he and his crew unwittingly discover the secret that the alliance has kept hidden for decades. Unusual, and also refreshing in terms of sci-fi epics because there are no aliens, or unfeasable technology. In fact it's kind of like a space western! Unmissable if you liked "firefly", a little confusing if you have not seen it, but either way highly reccomended!

It is a fantastic film, 5 stars, I would recomend it 2 anyone. I can't wait to watch it again. It wasn't what i expected, it was better.

Summer Glau at her best but the plot was a bit disjointed. Bit like a stretched TV episode. Still the effects were good and it was not expensive

Been meaning to watch this for a while, managed to get on ebay the other week, overall i would rate the film as good, one of those you could maybe watch a couple of times. The story follows usual good v bad with usual plot, but it is done very well and the characters are really likeable. Can't say i got bored with it at any point, so yeah certainly a good film and worth a watch.

A superb spin-off film from the Firefly series. I brilliant action film, based in a dirty future, where space colonies simply aren't the tidy places that the Starship Enterprise might visit.

Well worth watching!
