Album Notes The songs on SELECTED AMBIENT WORKS VOL. 2 have no titles.Aphex Twin: Richard James (various instruments).Very occasionally in music, something will come at you from so far out on the left field, that not only do you not note its immediate import, you scarcely recognize it as music at all. This is the record that cemented the media's fascination with Richard James, a Cornwall bedroom DJ. Selected Ambient Works is not an entirely representative recording, as these are essentially mood pieces, unlike the more instantaneous, dancefloor-targeted material that originally brought him to the nation's attention. Nevertheless if you are prepared to make the journey, and can see past the album's intimidating length and its lack of linear framework, there are some exquisite moments - ranging in texture from melodic delirium to sweeping melancholy. Reviews Review created: 09/11/08 by: Aphex Twin is taking up the heritage from Brian Eno and make strange soundscapes to feed your fantasy as a listener. It's rather minimalistic and far from noisy. You really have to be in the right mood for this kind of demanding music, very open minded and be prepared to give something of yourself to the experience as a listener. I think that Aphex Twin is one of the most successful producers of so called ambient music. To be more specific regarding their way of creating it I would say that there's often a claustrophobic feeling in their production , the sound of confined spaces and eccoes, blurred sound images, a bit monotonous, but still very earthly and reality-like influences (in the meaning opposite of dreamy, fluffy and spaced out as some of the ambient music can be sometimes). I see old, empty and redundant production halls here and dusty sub-way tubes when I listen to this. So don't put this record on and expect any hamonies and traditional rock music. It's pure experimental and strange music, but this group/person is one of the best in this genre. This particular record is well worth buing if you like obscure ambient pieces of compositions. Otherwise you'll probably be a little disappointed. Review ID: 10000000009342819 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 25/04/08 by: 1 of 1 people found this review helpful. This is a work both seminal and un-representational by probably the most important electronic music composer of the 90s. Back in 1992-1993 'ambient' was a buzz word, as producers began to create album length works which had an appeal beyond the ecstasy enthused dance floor and the 12" crowd pleasing classic. Richard D James, known as 'Aphex Twin' was the UK's first poster boy of the informal 'electronic dance music as serious music' movement. But with the release of SAW II he took the opportunity of his new found fame to give his (typically young) listeners an experience of something that was for the most part beyond their understanding or appreciation, leading many to wonder whether the emperor was sometimes clothe less or if perhaps this was a bit of a joke. Time matures tastes, however, and while James never again returned to the same non-linear, horizon gazing subtleties of these musical textures, the reputation of this album amongst those with ears to hear is now like that of a jeweled family heirloom passed down in secret without word of mouth from brother to brother. Simply beautiful. Review ID: 10000000006826237 Was this review helpful? Report this review This is brilliant album - its music but not how you have heard it before - Aphex Twin brings together sounds that relax you, alert you and scare you. Theres music to strip the wall paper from the walls and to send a small child to the land of nod. 2 CD's worth of brilliance Review ID: 10000000005627162 Was this review helpful? If you like things from the warp label then this album is a must own! Well thats my opinion anyway:) Review ID: 10000000002181540 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
