stalker, who makes creepy phone calls before assaulting his victim. A group of friends including Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris), Buffy Gilmore (Shannon Elizabeth), Brenda Meeks (Regina Hall), and Greg Phillippe (Lochlyn Munro), are also being stalked by the killer, who wants them dead following their cover-up of a car accident which took place the previous Halloween.

Added to the mix are the inevitable pesky reporter Gail Hailstorm (Cheri Oteri), and the typical bumbling policeman Deputy Doofy Gilmore (Dave Sheridan). As the killings come to a head, in true clichéd fashion all the potential victims gather for a wild party, where they can be picked off one by one.

This is a parody of modern horror films from the teen-slasher genre, that pokes fun at some of the biggest hits of recent years. Some of the films sent up include: 'Scream', 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', 'The Blair Witch Project', The Sixth Sense and The Matrix. The killer is a familiar cross between Ghostface from 'Scream' and Ben Willis of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer'. This was a film that opened to plenty of hype and promised much that it largely failed to deliver. The teenagers are two-dimensional and interchangeable. There is far too much sexual humour and vulgarity, which seems to have been used for its own sake without any concern for whether it is actually funny. Corny and silly, this film will appeal most to the lads, who will doubtless enjoy it.

SCARY MOVIE - NOT SO SCARY
Review created: 04/09/06

No matter how many times this DVD is viewed, the laughter still omits from the mouth.
Endless mickey traking from various 'Scray' films make this a classic.

The acting is a bit wanting in a few areas, but one DVD that should most definitley be in any collection is Scary Movie.

A decent stroyline is backed up by some good screen-play and visual effects are top notch.

All in all a very good film, and most definitley worth the watch!

It would not be surprising if you found the opening scenes of the Wayans Brothers' "Scary Movie" somewhat familiar - they are. A beautiful high school student is brutally murdered, leaving her friends wondering about the killer amongst them. Our heroine, Cindy (Anna Faris), and her closest (and mainly clueless) friends are left to try and survive the killing spree, assisted by the local police and pursued by television reporter Gail Hailstorm.

A study in bad taste, it is a cross between "There's Something About Mary" and "Scream", with a few other influences too. The humour crosses every boundary possible: age, race or gender - there are no limits. The laughs vary from hitting you right in the face, to being surprisingly subtle. But either way they fly fast and furious, so much so that you can be left only just grasping the last gag. If, however, the humour does not appeal to you, you can pass the time by spotting the many other film references particularly notable take-offs being "The Blair Witch Project" and "The Matrix".

This is not a film for the faint-hearted, it is an exercise in ribald humour, both scripted and visual, which will keep you laughing from start to finish. While the movie itself is far from scary, The Wayans Brothers' minds certainly are.

Story:
In the tradition of such genre parodies as AIRPLANE!, THE NAKED GUN, and SPACEBALLS, Keenen Ivory Wayans takes on the teen horror flick with SCARY MOVIE, a campy, riotous send-up of everything from the SCREAM and HALLOWEEN franchises to I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, CARRIE, and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. In a small town, a copycat is reenacting the SCREAM murders, and local reporter Gail Hailstorm will do just about anything to get the story. The six high school students who ran over a man on a sharp curve the year before think the killer is out for revenge, but sweet and innocent Cindy Campbell believes that the madman might just lurk a lot closer to home.
Cowritten by Shawn and Marlon Wayans (and four others), the script leaves no cliche unturned; in addition to the horror parodies, the film also spoofs such teen sex comedies as AMERICAN PIE and such hit films as THE SIXTH SENSE, THE MATRIX, and FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH. The film never lets up in its striking re-creations of classic scenes, and it never passes up the chance for a joke, no matter how crude. The young, attractive cast looks like it just jumped out of DAWSON'S CREEK, playing everything up to the hilt--and beyond.

Comments:
Greatest Spoof movie of all times!

Definately go see this one, it's absolutely NOT a waste of your money!

Review created: 25/08/08(updated 26/08/08)

Funny and innovative at the time as a spoof movie.
Not as funny as sequals but full of slapstick humor and jabs at the declining-in-imagination horror industry.

funny, gory, what more could you want
Review created: 24/06/08

What to say! I kept hearing about this film during my first few years at secondary school, as Scary Movie 3 had just come out. So I decided to watch it and I'm glad I did! What an achievement, comedy everywhere you look, TASTEFUL gore (not simply blood everywhere) and a selection of decent actors. Anna Faris will most likely have a great movie career, the Wayans brothers were a nice touch, as was Shannon Elizabeth, Lochlyn Munro and another intriguing character, Regina Hall. All I can say is see this film, have some laughs and buy the sequels as soon as possible, as they are equally fantastic in all aspects of comedy and quite possibly, horror!

  Scared silly
Review created: 07/06/08

`Airplane!' meets `Scream' could've been the pitch made by director Keenan Ivory Wayans and his talented sibling screenwriters Marlon & Shawn to their studio, Dimension, in this riotously funny, hit and miss, parody of the horror genre.

Taking merciless jibes at the slasher films including `I Know What You Did Last Summer' among others, the satire focuses on B.A. Corpse High School and the costumed serial killer who begins a string of nasty killings starting with bodacious Electra (aping Drew Barrymore's signature opening to the first `Scream') whose silicone implants can't save her attacker nor from getting run over by her parents (oblivious to their daughter's plight by engaging in oral sex, the first of many sexual jokes throughout). Of course the media jumps on to glamourize the murders with the help of newshound Gail Hailstrom (`SNL's Oteri, spoofing Courteney Cox's rabid media blitzer) aimlessly trying to get a scoop. And then there are the generic teens-victims-to-be including Faris as the Neve Campbell/Jennifer Love Hewitt character, Cindy.

Though not as hilarious as the granddaddy of all spoofs `Airplane!', `Scary Movie' (incidentally this was the original title of the first `Scream'), does attempt to get as many laughs for its buck in taking shots at the mentally ill, smoking dope, homosexuals, genitalia, and for me the biggest laugh was the predominately white film audience silencing an obnoxiously loud black character through all types of violence. Gross jokes, sex jokes, and any thing that will stick to the wall jokes get their dues paid here and then some.

The Wayans brothers - Shawn as Ray, a football player with sexuality issues and Marlon as Shorty, the fun-loving pot head who hooks up the killer with some hilarious moments of getting baked - co-scripted this lampoon (and get onscreen credit with co-writers Buddy Johnson, Phil Beauman, Jason Friedberg & Aaaron Seltzer) and provide most of the laughs often at their own expense and with a helping hand from elder brother Keenan (who has a cameo in a trailer for `Amistad 2'), clearly know how to make one laugh and even if their tv series for 5 seasons was axed (as it is fondly recalled in the film's climax), be certain that an inevitable sequel will unearth itself in all its grotesque giddiness ensuing.

  Side splitter
Review created: 12/05/08
by:

For 88 sidesplitting minutes, Keenan Ivory Wayans takes the sexual images that make us squirmy and rubs them in our faces, one-upping the Farrellys along the way. Did the "buns and wieners" scene in "There's Something About Mary" make you wince? Keenan gives us an erect penis used as a lethal weapon. And where "Mary" featured the legendary "hair-gel" scene, "Scary Movie" offers a geyser of semen. Utilizing the scattershot comedy approach that filmmakers have tried to replicate (usually without success) since "Airplane," the story is a take-off of "Scream," meshed with "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Somebody dressed up in a ghost-face costume is murdering teenagers and stalking four kids who accidentally killed a man on a dark highway a year earlier. The most memorable scenes from both movies get spoofed here, along with loads of other films, including "The Exorcist" and "The Usual Suspects." Wayans and company even manage successful send-ups of "The Matrix" and "The Blair Witch Project," two films that have been parodied to death

  Scary Movie (2001) DVD Version
Review created: 29/02/08
by:

Right from the outset, this film has you wondering what puns, gags or mickey takes will be next. Your emotions range from a gentle smile through to full laughter.
There are plenty of laughs and the film is full of, not only, obvious humour, but also subtle and, "What's that taking place in the background?" humour.
The only possible drawback for the film is that if the viewer is not "Up on" the serious scary movies of the time then some of the gags may be lost on the viewer.
Overall, should you feel like 90" circa of light entertainment with plenty of laughs, then I recommend this DVD to you.
