Seen through the eyes of a squad of American soldiers, the story begins with World War II's historic D-Day invasion, then moves beyond the beach as the men embark on a dangerous special mission. Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) must take his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in combat. Faced with impossible odds, the men question their orders. Why are eight men risking their lives to save just one? Surrounded by the brutal realities of war, each man searches for his own answer - and the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honour, decency and courage. The quality of the acting is excellent, but most disturbingly, and having never endured the horrors of war, I can only imagine that this film is the closest portrayal of what young innocent soldiers have endured on active service. Stunning !! Review ID: 10000000005306483 Was this review helpful? Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) must lead a small troop of men into the Normandy countryside to find a soldier, whose three brothers have all been killed in action. We see the Normandy beach landings (awe-inspiring and stomach-churning) through to the climactic battle in a small French town. The set pieces are amazing, the cinematography stunning - but the emotional impact hits you like a hammer-blow. Quite simply one of the greatest films of all time - whether you like War films or not. Having just watched this film again, i am reminded just how good an actor Hanks can be, while there are faultless performances from all around him (Paul Giammati, Leland Orser, Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Tom Sizemore et all). If you have never seen this film - purchasing this is an absolute no-brainer - you simply must own it! Yet another reaon why Spielberg is the greatest cinematic story-teller of our time - maybe all time! Review ID: 10000000003718860 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
