  Spielberg's War Masterpiece!
Review created: 05/06/07(updated 05/06/07)

Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) must lead a small troop of men into the Normandy countryside to find a soldier, whose three brothers have all been killed in action. We see the Normandy beach landings (awe-inspiring and stomach-churning) through to the climactic battle in a small French town. The set pieces are amazing, the cinematography stunning - but the emotional impact hits you like a hammer-blow.

Quite simply one of the greatest films of all time - whether you like War films or not. Having just watched this film again, i am reminded just how good an actor Hanks can be, while there are faultless performances from all around him (Paul Giammati, Leland Orser, Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Tom Sizemore et all). If you have never seen this film - purchasing this is an absolute no-brainer - you simply must own it!

Yet another reaon why Spielberg is the greatest cinematic story-teller of our time - maybe all time!

If you don't yet own or haven't yet seen this movie, then i suggest you buy it. Because this is one of the greatest movies of our time. Though it's true that this is not the type of movie you want to sit down with the family and eat popcorn, the emotional drive of the picture, the story's poignant messages, and the fantastic acting of the cast draws you into a world that is both dangerous and unpredictable. I give this movie my highest recommendation. Saving Private Ryan is a movie that makes you realize how life is precious and how honor and duty, though they are deep philosophical concepts that are praised in war, can put you in jeopardy of losing your life for something you may not believe in.

If you like war and you like gore, but you dont like luvvy duvvy scenes, then this is the film to watch. Incredibly historicaly accurate, this film is best watched in HD with full surround sound because you'll then get the best in-war experience of being a soldier of WW2 whilst sitting nicely on your sofa at home.

I would highly recommend this film for any war nut or to any budding historian wanting to get a better idea of Normandy!!

I bought this DVD as a Xmas present for my son. It was delivered quickly but the plastic casing at one of the corners was broken off, otherwise I was happy with the purchase.

This is the DVD I was thrilled to find . If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. The run time is 163 minutes . turn the sound up and you will be amazed at the tremendous cinema sounds and reality of the picture. Enjoy.

World War depicted at its finest
Review created: 29/02/08

Speilberg has indeed produced/directed some amazing films over the years, that have mystified the masses.
This film of course was seen as one of the finest made in the last 15 years, and deservedly so. The opening battle scene is about as good (or bad if you were there in 1944) as it can get for the movie watcher. The feeling of despair can be felt as the German bullets rained in on the hapless American GI's. The capture and the ensuing battles across France are shot in the best way possible, and the hunt for Ryan is one of guts and steely determination with traps taking each man to the highest and lowest of human thought and nature.

If you have not seen it...why ever not?

  Saving Private Ryan DVD
Review created: 31/01/08

Ask anyone about their thoughts on Saving Private Ryan and they will undoubtedly mention the scenes in the first 20mins or so and the impact it made on them. It is true that the scenes of the 'landings' leave a lasting impression. You can only imagine what it must have been like in real life if the film is anything to go by. The rest of the film continues with unimaginable events. Made the same impact on me as Schindler's List movie. Once you've seen the film, you'll never forget it. Watching the movie does make you think about the depths humanity can sink to at times. Don't want to give too much away about the film just incase you haven't seen it. If you haven't seen it yet, why not?? If you have seen it, you'll know exactly what I mean and will probably watch it again and again. I have!
Definately a DVD that should be in your collection.

Private Ryan - he could have been you
Review created: 02/09/07

The first half hour of the movie gives us a fantasic and well produced insight to what happened at the beaches of Normandy in June 1944. The film has very realisic scenes specially the action scenes are impressing. Great photography and special effects as well. Then the story leads us into Spielbergs idea and purpose with this movie. This is not just an ordinary action movie, you see. Spielberg is Jewish and one might say that the invation of Normandy ment the first step to effectivly stop Nazi-Germany's attempt to exterimate the jews. Because of that, these soldiers are probably Speilbergs favourite heroes in history. So who is this private Ryan? Is he worth risking many lives for? In the second world war people/soldiers risked and gave their lives so that later generations can live in peace and freedom. So Ryan might be a representative of all of us who are enjoying life today. 'Are you a person that was worth dying for? If not - try to live your life in a better way tomorrow', is how I interprit Spielberg. Beside from this, a crucial moment of the film is when the guys that we follow in seach of private Ryan let a german POW go in stead of executing him and the ethical dilemma connected to this. Spielberg definately wants us to see this movie also in a ethical and philosophical way and not just as a war action movie. A very important film which together with Schindlers' list is a great contribution to the debate about WW2.
