I have always loved war films and only ever critised them for not having a good story line, but this film has some of the best scenes, like the one at the end when they are defending the bridge, or the D-Day landings, very gory and very realistic. This is another piece of fine work from director Steven Spielberg. The film follows the exploits of a small platoon of men fighing thier way through from the D-Dya landings and occupied france to find a soldier parachuted behind enemy lines who has lost 4 of his brothers, the passion and emotion brought out in this film made even me even feel like crying each time on of the squad got killed, and yet show a spark of hope when they step onto the battlefield each time. Tom Hanks shows in this movie why he is possibly one of the best actors of all time.

I absolutely love this film, everything about it is brilliant, the acting, the story, the special effects it has me crying along with it every time

Review

Seen through the eyes of a squad of American soldiers, the story begins with World War II's historic D-Day invasion, then moves beyond the beach as the men embark on a dangerous special mission. Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) must take his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in combat. Faced with impossible odds, the men question their orders. Why are eight men risking their lives to save just one? Surrounded by the brutal realities of war, each man searches for his own answer - and the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honour, decency and courage.

BEST WAR FILM OF ALL TIME! - I'm not a huge fan of war films but this was brilliant stuff. The battle scenes were so authentic, particularly the beach landings and were graphic to say the least. A film that can keep you gripped for this length of time has got to be good. Even if you're not a war movie lover I challenge you not to like this movie. Saw it on Sky then had to have it on DVD. Would anyone like to gift me a large screen TV so that I could enjoy it more? It was worth a try!

A tip before watching this DVD. Turn the volume up on the surround sound and get ready for some astounding action. The Normandy landing at the beginning of this film shows what war can really be like. The horror and fury are captured perfectly, time even slowing as some combatants actually report in battles, sight, sound and actions all becoming distorted and changed. One of the greatest pieces of war film making ever made. The whole film continues this sensual and emotional roller coaster to the films explosive climax. Excellent moral and thought provoking scenes set in the present day round off this classic film to its full potential.

Plot
based on the story of Frederic Niland, who was pulled out of frontline duty after his mother had received three MIA telegrams on the same day regarding his brothers, this is based on that mission - to find and rescue Private Ryan in the midst of the French landings.

Verdict
Uncompromising, powerful war movie that does not pull any punches. Pefectly balances the inhumanity of war and the humanity of its protagonists. Devastating and essential viewing.

Saving Private Ryan follows the story of members of the US army during the Second World War.

Having seen her 4 boys go off to fight in the war, a lonely mother has recieved news that three of her children have been killed while serving their country. The film centres around a group of men who's mission is to bring home the fourth and final son.

The look and feel of the film are amazing, but with the added bonus of some truely unbelievable sound effects, you really get the sense you are there.

The story is well thought out and keeps you interested throughout.

Tom Hanks is in great form, and so are many of his co-stars. I strongly recomend this film to everyone!

I did think it was a good film, but I watched it over a few days as it seemed so long!! The kids enjoyed it as well- and they learnt a lot from it!!
Its meant to be one of the best war films around according to Soldiers in the war! So it must be accurate, but entertaining as well!

One of the all time great war films. In my opinion it's one of Tom Hanks greatest rolls besides the one in Cast Away. A must see for any fan.

I think this is the best war film ever made. I have worn my copy out,and am so glad i found this one.I have not played this one yet as my dvd player has broken,but i am confident all will be well.I put a good rating on it as there are some marks on the disc.I have however added this seller to my favourites.
I can only now wait and see as to wether it is up to my expectations and also if i recieve feedback.

a Jew made film with Jewish actors, are all Germans evil OH YES.
the props are fantastic, the acting by most of the cast was rubbish, very unbelievable.

a classic newish war film, that brings the screen to life,

brought it to update from VHS to DVD, a film you can watch over and over again,
excellent 2~+ hours viewing, Tom Hanks at his best.

This film is about 4 brothers who are all at war. 3 of the brothers have died in combat and it is Tom Hank's missing to rescue the 4th son, Ryan.

I like the way the film is set out as at the beginning of the film it shows Ryan when he is older paying his respects to Tom Hanks.

I also like the scene of the German sniper in the bell tower as it was a good shot.

There is one annoying character that gets on my nerves and it is the translator as he doesnt actually use his weapon and this inturn leads to more killings.

A msut see film and one you just have to watch over and over again.

My father was on Gold Beach on 6th June 1944 age 19 with the first wave, He was in no 10 beach group of the 6th Border Regiment and their duties was to make the beach safe for the following men. This video shows what he doesn't want to put into words !!! A must video for everyone, parts are very gory but must only be half of what realy went on.

this is the best film i have ever seen, it is a must see film. Tom Hanks plays a brilliant staring role in this film and he does not disappoint
