  Songwriting at its best!

Darren Hayes lyrical intelligence is on show from the off. 'Affirmation' the energetic life-lesson anthem, contains some superb rhymes and even the cliches are palatable and amazing lyrics.
The boys are at their best on the ballads, particularly 'Crash And Burn' and the gorgeous piano-penned 'Two Beds And A Coffee Machine'.
Yet this band channel plenty of energy into their songs as well. 'The Animal Song' and 'The Best Thing' will have you dancing and singing along.
But emotion is the true strongpoint. Nowhere is emotion better expressed than on 'Hold Me' and 'Crash And Burn'.
Hayes falsetto is remarkable, surprisingly it does not annoy, it just furthers the unique image this supergroup have conjured up for themselves.

I Know That It Might Sound More Than A Little Crazy ...
Review created: 29/04/07(updated 29/04/07)

Pretty much like anyone else with a radio I heard 'I knew I Loved You' in 1999 / 2000 and really liked it. A friend recommended 'Crash And Burn' and what do you know, that was pretty damned good too. Next thing you know, I've bought the CD and 'Savage Garden' had a new fan.

They are a talented band who not only write interesting and exciting lyrics but also sing them in a lively and passionate manner backed by excellent music which they play with the same sense of passion. You can tell they really enjoy themselves when they pick up their instruments and start to play.

Listening to this album was a fantastic experience. The songs are great and range from;
... wildly romantic ('I Knew I Loved You') to
... seriously heavy ('Two Beds And A Coffee Machine')
... passing through mildly depressing ('I Don't Know You Anymore'),
... uplifting ('Crash And Burn')
... and just 'leap up and down and flail your arms around wildly to the music' great fun ('The Animal Song').

And you can't say that about many CDs!

If you've read my other reviews you'll know how much I love lyrics and this CD is simply overflowing with great lyrics and the neat little booklet which comes with the CD lists them all [great news] along with a couple of personal messages from the band. Nice Touch!

You've probably guessed that I love this CD and still listen to it seven years on. Well worth having, especially if you take the time to listen to the lyrics.

So, what's my favourite track? Difficult to choose but I'm going to forget all the deep meaning and beautiful love songs that touch me deeply and go with 'The Animal Song' for the sheer heart thumping enjoyment it gives me as I leap around the room! [I know, don't tell me, I'm a sad git.]

Hope you enjoy it as much as I have...

Regards
tbod

Havnt actually tried this particular CD as purchased as a gift, for someone that heard mine. In my opinion one of the best CD,s ever...every song is good, very few CD,s I can say that about. The person I have bought it for said it was one of the nicest CD,s they had ever heard.

Shame Savage Garden split up.

  Savage Garden - Affirmation
Review created: 27/03/09
by:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Following the successful formula of their eponymous debut album, Savage Garden's Affirmation is made up of classic pop melodies and sleepy ballads. The title track cracks open the album--a song that sees Hayes philosophising about the inequalities of the world from a liberal minded perspective (and in true Alanis Morissette "Ironic" fashion). Although it leaves the boys open to claims of pretentiousness, the song is a high-powered introduction to an album which somehow manages to alternate between safe and risky. For example, "The Animal Song" is a menagerie of popular music sounds, which manages to be challenging while remaining comfortably familiar. Affirmation is an album that affirms why Savage Garden are one of the world's most important pop duos. --John Galilee

Love this album...Darren Hayes has the most amazing voice. You know sometimes you buy an album and only enjoy 50 to 60% of it....not this one, love every track

  Affirmation is an outstanding album
Review created: 03/08/08

Missed out on this album first time around and was put off a little by the " hip " videos that accompanied the single releases . After hearing a few of the tracks requested on the radio I decided to give it a spin and don't regret it at all . Darren Hayes has probably the ultimate falsetto of any singer and a talent for writing memorably melodic songs . Sadly DH hasn't acheived the same kind of solo success without Daniel Jones to add the rock element to his techno - soul fusion . Nearly all tracks stand out making this more than just a vehicle for the singles and I suspect in time many other artists will get around to covering the songs .

  Savage Garden - Affirmation CD
Review created: 12/03/08

I purchased this CD when it was first released but unfortunately when i moved house it got lost during the move. I recently heard one of the tracks being played on Magic and it brought back some old memories so i re-bought it (at a ridiculously low price). The tracks although very similar to each other are easy listening.. The lyrics of the majority of the songs are very meaningful. Overall this is a great CD for anyone to have in their collection.

  It's all about Darren

I am more of a metal fan, I have to admit. I like Metallica, so Savage Garden may not be the most obvious choice for a rock fan like me - but hey! Even rock fans need their quieter moments and this definitely touches all the right buttons for me! Very good musically - amazing really considering there are only two main blokes in the band - and Darren Hayes! What a voice! Reminds me and my dad of Chester Bennington's vocals for Linkin Park! Very beautiful - and Darren is very easy on the eye too! Top class album - no complaints from this girl!
