Photographers quandary, Ultra II vs. Extreme III/IV?
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.
If you're an enthusiastic digital photographer then a quandary awaits, the decision between many different brands of flash memory and formats. Thankfully helpful advice makes decisions easier -- the format is going to be dictated by your camera body and usually falls to SDHC or CompactFlash, and if you need to be assured of a fast and reliable product, it generally falls to two reputable brands who've made their names selling fast memory to photographers:
Lexar
SanDisk
This review isn't intended to state which is better, the genuine article from either will keep you a happy photographer for many months and years to come. However it is intended to look at the speed of various products from SanDisk and take a holistic approach to doing a cost:benefit analysis - which is best?
Marketing from the flash vendors will always state you should go for the fastest and most expensive model, in the case of SanDisk this would probably be a toss-up between the Extreme IV or 'Ducati' cards -- but for all that dosh, what are you getting for your money, when you slap it into your camera?
... Well, erm, nothing much really :-( Unless you've forked out nearly £5,000 on a camera body it probably won't support UDMA and will be limited to PIO3/4, the speed which you'll be writing to that card will thus be constrained to around the 8-15MB/second range - those really high end cards make *big* marketing hay out of the fact they can handle 40MB/second.

Even the most modern bodies like a Canon EOS 40D or a Nikon D300 do *not* support UDMA which limits the speed the internal buffer can write to flash. Therefore, unless you're a professional photographer (in which case you probably don't need to be reading this!) who needs to regularly and rapidly swap memory and dump to a laptop before formatting for re-use, save your hard-earned money and purchase the more sensible option (Ultra II or Extreme III) and spend the rest on lenses or a nice holiday to take more shots ;)
