Album Notes Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizers, bass, bass pedals); Alex Lifeson (electric & acoustic guitars, synthesizers); Neil Peart (drums, percussion, electronic percussion).Aditional personnel: John Rutsey (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered.Seven years after Rush's first "best of" compilation was issued, the two-CD CHRONICLES, a new pair of discs was released as a replacement, RETROSPECTIVE, VOL. 1 (1974-1980) and RETROSPECTIVE, VOL. 2 (1981-1987). RETROSPECTIVE is a sonically improved collection of all of the band's best-known songs that also includes a number of the band's more recherche tracks that were overlooked on CHRONICLES.Rush's work in the '70s is held in high regard by metalheads and prog-rock enthusiasts. Beginning as a Led Zeppelin sound-alike early on ("Finding My Way," "Fly By Night," "Anthem"), the trio gradually re-invented itself as a sci-fi inspired metal band ("2112 Overture," "Temples of Syrinx"). By the late '70s, Rush was fast becoming one of the most popular rock bands of the time, helped by radio favorites like "Closer to the Heart" and "The Trees." The virtuosity of the instrumental "La Villa Strangiato" demonstrates why musicians have always revered the trio's chops. By the beginning of the '80s, Rush was improving its songwriting skills, as evidenced by two of the band's most popular songs, "Freewill" and "Spirit of the Radio." | |||||||||||||
Reviews Review created: 03/04/08(updated 03/04/08) by: To be honest, I am a `Rush` fanatic and own every album released, so as a result there was nothing new for me on this compilation. I purchased this CD for completists`s sake and got it at a cracking price(What E-bay is there for). However that said, anybody new to Rush, and wants a snapshot of their early career(First six studio albums),then this album is a must. Absolutely no fillers, every track a classic and destined to be in my car for a long time. Review ID: 10000000006472191 Was this review helpful? CD is worth it just for the 2112 overture, but would have preferred some other tracks to have been included. Review ID: 10000000006298057 Was this review helpful? Brings a glow back to an aging rocker who has but vinyl and cassette to remember Rush by. Review ID: 10000000001735344 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
