Simon Pegg sheds blood, sweat, tears and a bit of pus in Run, Fat Boy, Run, chasing the love he left behind five years previously. It's a romantic comedy told from the male perspective, but Pegg, who also co-wrote the script, isn't afraid to reveal a soft, squidgy centre - and we don't just mean the beer gut. Plenty of dry, British humour serves as a counterbalance and makes for a surprising big-screen directorial debut by former 'Friend' (and Pegg's pal) David Schwimmer.

When we meet Dennis he's scrambling for the exit, leaving pregnant bride Libby (Thandie Newton) at the altar. Five years on he's a flabby security guard struggling to chase down a thieving drag queen in ten-inch heels and playing part-time dad to his son Jake (Matthew Fenton). It's only when Libby gets serious about puffed-up high-flyer Whit (Hank Azaria) that Dennis finally makes a commitment: He signs up for a charity marathon to show Libby his worth.

"PEGG TRADES ON HIS 'EVERYLAD' APPEAL"

Pegg trades on his 'Everylad' appeal, successfully blending physical comedy with deadpan wit. He even manages to be endearing whilst frantically humping a semi-clad mannequin (to soothe a bad case of prickly heat). Schwimmer makes a few gratuitous diversions though, like a scene where Dennis' boorish buddy (Dylan Moran playing the Irish stereotype) treats a giant blister on his foot. Thankfully the film isn't just a series of crude innuendos and gross-out gags. Schwimmer often resists an easy laugh in favour of a poignant moment and thereby heightens the sense of urgency during Dennis' last dash for glory. He does stop short of cloying sentimentality and, while the route to the finish line is wrought with predictable twists, it's also a great endorphin rush.

If you like Simon Pegg you will love this. Same brand of comedy used in Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead but with a nice love side story which is actually quite well acted for a slap stick comedy. Pegg has a great on screen relationship with his son, its just a shame there isn't more of it shown. A real good Sunday afternoon family film, predictable ending but that doesn't let the film down. Sit back "switch off" and enjoy it, its good clean simple fun.

Predictable and dare I say pedestrian plot(excuse the pun).I found it very hard to believe that the ex-fiancee of the lead character would ever have seen anything in him, they had very little in common, apart from a son and why would he think that finishing the London marathon would win her back?
Worth watching on a Sunday afternoon, as I did, but don't expect much. Laughs are few and far between.

i was really looking forward to watching this film, but disappointed it didn't live up to it,i found it very slow going with only the occasional laughs, simon pegg is a great actor, but not one if his best films.the end was totally predictable and way over the top.i definitely wouldn't watch it again.

Just a great film for entertainment. There arent that many good comedies around these days that I find myself waiting for the DVD release date so that I can buy it, to watch over and over.

This however, is one of them. I saw it at the cinema and was expecting a reasonable funny film but not on the scale of Shawn of the Dead or Hot Fuzz. I was wrong though as this measures up to both of them very favourably.

OK, in real life, the chances of a slightly overweight man keeping up with an experienced fit marathon runner are zero but I can forgive the writer that as the rest of the film is packed with funny moments and funny characters e.g. his Landlord.

This film is well worth buying and I certainly am. I even look forward to the out-takes as you always et the feeling that the actors have fun making these films.

For all guys who want to win the girl...

This is and will become a true classic of its time due to it having something for everyone contained within the film. All non-sporty guys will see themselves when it comes to enjoying the 'baaad' life before even thinking about exercise and the guy who has' lost that special one woman' will see themselves too due to their 'not seeing the woods for the trees' mind-set ! It is funny and all characters have a conection to everyone who knows that type of person while watching the movie. Therearre good visual jokes and trememdously 'spot-on' one liners. It is a great movie to watchj with your mates or your 'special someone' and a couple of beers/glass(es) of wine...and some chocolate !.....Buy it...you won't regret it !

After all the professional reviews telling me this was a scream and the funniest film of the year I was a little disappointed. Some parts have thier moments but more often enough the humour was too predictable.I give it an average as when this film has it's moments they're pretty funny

  Run Fat Boy Run

I was reticent to watch this as part of family film night but was the eventual happy victim of pester power. After the kids and my wife had talked me round, I settled down with my popcorn and soon became engrossed in a movie full of friendly, fun characters with a somewhat familiar story, spiced up by the unlikely marathon runner. The asian guy and his daughter could well be given a movie of their own, so funny were they. One scene with this chap left me bursting with laughter - I won't spoil it here but it was pure comedy genius.
I am beginning to find myself a fan of Simon Pegg as I enjoy pretty much all that he does.
Hot Fuzz might well still be my favourite but this keeps the momentum going - Let's get another one out Simon.

  You See My Point
Review created: 25/06/08(updated 23/07/08)

in my opinion Simon Pegg comedies can be hit and miss affairs. Sometimes the guy is funny, sometimes he just isnt. Add that to the fact this is directed by one of the guys from 'Friends' meant that I was watching this just as a film to watch rather than as something I desperately wanted to see.

But it is actually very funny. The plot and story progression are pretty basic and the end is somewhat predictable. But all that aside this is a really enjoyable watch. Pegg is totally on form. His cousin, played by Dylan Thomas, is spot on dry comic genius. Hank Azaria is totally brilliant as the baddie (Hank is the voice behind The Comic Book Guy and Professor Frink from The Simpsons). Simon Day (from The Fast Show) pops up in a pedigree cameo and Harish Patel is simply a comic revelation as Peggs long suffering miserable landlord.

A feel good movie that contains a few laugh out loud moments - and the commentary on the DVD reveals a few interesting facts which makes it a worthy listen.
