Early example of the genius of Rufus.

Rufus Wainwright is a genius. His vocals are incredible and orginal writing is second to none. I just love the structure of his songs from haunting to joyous in one song. Some of his songs remain in my head for days leaving me unable to sleep. Saw him in concert at the Hammersmith Apollo. Best gig ever. I left exhausted, physically and emotionally. This album is one of his earliest, not the best but Wow!! the next few just blew me away.

This album is fantastic, 'Want one' comes close followed by 'Poses' but neither are as completely perfect as this. Not one note or word is wasted the whole package is to be marvelled at. I have been a fan for two years and Im re-buying all the albums again now because Ive worn them all to pieces. If you've heard his voice and like the laid back tone, the extravagant musical and orchestral build-ups, the gutsy lyrics; buy this album you will not be disappointed. The only thing that comes close is 'Complaint de la Butte' (spelling?) on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Amazing

  Awful!

I bought this as i love his voice and really like his Judy Garland album. This is dreadful, really boring and monotonous. The songs merge into one and there is not one upbeat song on the whole album. I have listened to it once and will be giving it to charity!

Quite simply the most impressive debut album by any artist - original, varied and the greatest opening bars of a debut album. the great thing is he has continually achieved high quality with his other 4 studio albums but this is a complete album. If you find him hard to listen to - all I would say its stick with it, persevere - you wont be dissappointed when it clicks.
